PSP 5850a Seminar in Sport Psychology 1–3<br />

Special topics and issues in the field of sport psychology includ ing<br />

such areas as consultation, assessment, ethics, biomechanics,<br />

PSP 5855 Sport Psychology Practicum 3<br />

A practicum which includes rotating to three different sport<br />

psychology internship sites. This exposure practicum enables<br />

observation of sport psychology interns in action.<br />

PSP 5858 Sport Management Practicum: fieldwork 3<br />

In this course, students spend time observing and assisting<br />

professionals in the field during a specific sporting event. Class time<br />

is devoted to discussing what they observed in the field and<br />

preparing to implement what they have learned in future applied<br />

settings.<br />

PSP 5860 group Supervision 2<br />

Group Supervision involves students who are concurrently taking<br />

PSP 5855 Sport Psychology Practicum. Through group and<br />

individual presentations, discussions, and role-playing, students<br />

experience a supportive environment for exploring ethical and other<br />

issues relating to their practicum experience.<br />

PSP 5995 independent Study in Psychology 1–6<br />

Allows for individual study in a special interest area not offered as<br />

a regular course. To be arranged with consent of instructor and<br />

approval of the dean. May be repeated for credit with a change of<br />

topic.<br />

PSP 5990 Master’s Thesis Proposal 3<br />

Students develop a proposal for a master’s thesis and learn to<br />

synthesize prior professional work or study in pursuit of a specific<br />

area of research or application. Prerequisite: PSP 5054 or instructor<br />

consent.<br />

PSP 5991a–C Master’s Thesis a–C 2/2/2<br />

required of students completing a master’s thesis. The thesis<br />

typically takes three quarters and is completed under the<br />

supervision of the research director. research begins at least three<br />

quarters before anticipated graduation. A maximum of six units may<br />

be applied to the degree. Prerequisite: PSP 5990.<br />

PSP 5992 Supplemental Thesis assistance 1–6<br />

Supplemental assistance addressing individual student needs in<br />

completing the master’s thesis. Students consult with relevant<br />

faculty to recruit a supplemental advisor. Prerequisite: PSP 5991C.<br />

PSP 5998 Supplemental Project assistance 1–6<br />

Supplemental assistance addressing individual student needs in<br />

completing the master’s project. Students consult with relevant<br />

PSP 9020 Town hall Meetings 0<br />

Town Hall Meetings are held twice a year. Students will attend all<br />

town hall meetings where current issues in the sport psychology<br />

department will be addressed. The meetings will be a chance for all<br />

students and faculty in the Sport Psychology program to get<br />

together to address changes in the field of sport psychology,<br />

certification, policy changes, and research project updates. It will<br />

also be a forum for students to ask questions and give feedback on<br />

the program and to discuss pertinent issues, concerns, and topics.<br />

PSP 9025 Speaker Series 0<br />

The JFKU speaker series of the Sport Psychology program is an<br />

exciting opportunity to listen and learn from top sport psychol ogy<br />

practitioners from all over the world. Starting in fall 2007, all<br />

students are required to attend at least two presentations in the<br />

speaker series while they are in the Sport Psychology program.<br />

PSP 9030 developing a Consulting Practice 0<br />

This professional workshop presents the basic marketing skills for<br />

the field of sport psychology. Students will learn ideas to market<br />

their services as a consultant and strategies for building a client base.<br />

Students will have the opportunity to develop and implement a<br />

marketing plan for their business, including client branding,<br />

advertising, tax issues, and ethics regarding marketing in the field<br />

of sport psychology.<br />

PSP 9090 Ma Written examination 0<br />

Comprehensive written examination covering material of Phase I,<br />

to be taken at the end of Phase I. Further guidelines are available in<br />

the Sport Psychology office.<br />

PSP 9091 Ma oral examination 0<br />

Comprehensive oral examination covering material in all phases of<br />

the program to be taken in the student’s last quarter. Further<br />

guidelines are available in the Sport Psychology office.<br />

Counseling Psychology [PSY],<br />

[PSJ], [PSB], and [PSC] Courses<br />

Note that Counseling Psychology courses are offered in Pleasant Hill<br />

(PSY), Campbell (PSJ), Berkeley (PSB) and the Santa Cruz area<br />

(PSC). For simplicity’s sake, all courses listed in this catalog will have<br />

the PSY prefix, although they also may be offered as PSJ, PSB, or PSC.<br />

PSY 5001 effective Writing for the Social Sciences 2<br />

This optional course is designed to help students achieve excellence<br />

in writing for the social sciences. The course reviews foundational<br />

principles of professional writing, including grammar, structure,<br />

formatting, organization, and clarity of presentation. The course<br />

then builds upon these foundational skills to develop proficiency in<br />

writing for graduate school and relevant clinical work. This section<br />

of the course will focus on building an argument, effectively<br />

referencing sources, and using the American Psychological<br />

Association (APA) formatting.<br />
