PSP 5821 gender issues in Sport 2<br />

This course examines the role of women in sports both as athletes<br />

and consultants. Students will explore the history of women in<br />

sports as well as identifying important issues to consider when<br />

working with female athletes.<br />

PSP 5822 Psychology of group interpersonal<br />

Communication 3<br />

This course will provide a foundation of knowledge in the sport<br />

psychology field relevant to team building and the psychology of<br />

group interpersonal communication. Students will have the<br />

opportunity to learn team-building, debriefing, and processing skills<br />

and strategies that will enable them to develop a consulting style for<br />

working effectively with teams. The course will also examine the<br />

practical and theoretical application of group process in relation to<br />

working in the field of sport psychology. The students will gain an<br />

understanding of group dynamics and will be able to use this<br />

knowledge with diverse populations. The course will provide<br />

hands-on training in how to teach and implement these skills,<br />

recognize ethical issues, and how to be professional in the field.<br />

PSP 5824 Psychological elements of addiction<br />

in Sport 1<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic princi ples,<br />

theories, and interventions in addiction studies when working with<br />

athletes. It explores a broad range of material regarding<br />

mood-altering drug experimentation, abuse, and addiction. Focus<br />

will be directed to the role of the sport psychol ogy consultant when<br />

working with an athlete who has potential substance-abuse issues.<br />

Assessment, treatment options, and specific referral information<br />

will be explored.<br />

PSP 5826 Psychological dimensions of Youth Sport 2<br />

Impact of sport activity on the development and well-being of<br />

children and youth in relation to current psychological knowl edge.<br />

Includes self-esteem, peer pressure, cooperative and competitive<br />

behavior, role of coaches, group interaction and a systems view of<br />

sport teams. May be applied toward PSy 5309 for Sport Psychology<br />

Specialization students.<br />

PSP 5827 economics of Sport 2<br />

This course will cover the basic theories of sport income and<br />

expenditures in both public and private settings. The cost of doing<br />

business in the sporting realm will be a focus of this class as well as<br />

the practical implications of this aspect of sport man agement.<br />

PSP 5828 event Management 3<br />

This course will explore the logistics, management, and planning of<br />

a sporting event. Fan experience and expectations will be covered<br />

as well as attracting sporting events to a particular city.<br />

PSP 5829 Management Strategies for Sport 3<br />

This course will explore traditional models of leadership and<br />

management as they apply to sport. Management issues such as<br />

leadership, team development, conflict resolution, and group<br />

problem solving will also be addressed.<br />

PSP 5830 Sport Marketing 3<br />

The course will provide information on marketing principles,<br />

promotion, sponsorship, and ticketing. Basic principles of public<br />

and media relations and how they relate to sport will also be<br />

covered. The role of public relations personnel and how it pertains<br />

to the handling of the media will be discussed.<br />

PSP 5831 Sport law 2<br />

This course will focus on the legal and business aspects of the<br />

professional sports industry. Specifically, the ways in which contract,<br />

labor, tort, and antitrust law influence, impact, and direct the<br />

development of relationships between leagues, teams, athletes,<br />

agents, television, Internet, advertisers, and fans. There will also be<br />

a critical analysis of professional sports leagues, standard player<br />

contracts, collective-bargaining agreements, and playerendorsement<br />

agreements.<br />

PSP 5832 Psychology of injury 1<br />

The psychology of injury course teaches students how to work with<br />

an injured athlete using mental training strategies for reha bilitation.<br />

PSP 5833 Kinesiology 4<br />

This course introduces students to each of the major biophysical<br />

sub-disciplines of kinesiology—anatomy, biomechanics, exercise<br />

physiology, motor control, and sport and exercise psychology.<br />

Includes an integrated study of human movement and applies this<br />

knowledge to human performance and physical activity across the<br />

lifespan. Concepts in the various subfields of kinesiol ogy are<br />

examined and career opportunities in the field of kinesi ology are<br />

explored. Students will also gain a better understanding of the<br />

course concepts through projects and class discussions.<br />

PSP 5834 Motor learning and Performance 2<br />

This course will teach students how to apply the principles of motor<br />

learning and performance in a variety of real-world situations.<br />

Students will learn to identify solutions that address many of the<br />

issues and obstacles encountered when teaching and learning motor<br />

skills.<br />

PSP 5835 exercise Psychology 2<br />

This course examines the psychological antecedents and<br />

conse quences of physical activity relationships. Includes the mental<br />

health benefits of exercise as well as motivational factors involved<br />

in exercising and the many variables that influence exercise<br />

behavior, e.g., stress, emotional states, anxiety, and depression.<br />

PSP 5836 Sport and exercise nutrition 2<br />

This course will describe the basic physiology of the major systems,<br />

describe the food sources of macro- and micronutrients, and discuss<br />

sports nutrition supplements. Body weight, diet, and energy balance<br />

will also be addressed. Students will learn the nuances of how<br />

nutrition affects sport performance as well as the physical changes<br />

that take place in our bodies during exercise.<br />

PSP 5850 Seminar in Sport Psychology 1–3<br />

Special topics and issues in the field of sport psychology includ ing<br />

such areas as consultation, assessment, ethics, biomechanics,<br />

kinesiology, and women in sports. May be repeated for credit with<br />

a change of topic.<br />
