PSd 7251 Qualitative research: Critical review 3<br />

responding to the program’s mission of applied, socially rele vant,<br />

and culturally congruent research, this course covers major<br />

qualitative approaches to research and data analysis and the<br />

development of critical thinking skills. Skills will be used to assess<br />

the relevance, appropriateness, and utility of various methods with<br />

regard to specific research questions, populations, and social<br />

contexts. Prerequisite: PSd 7250.<br />

PSd 7252 Clinical dissertation Proposal i 2<br />

This course is designed to begin the dissertation process, deter mine<br />

an area of interest, develop a review of the literature, determine an<br />

appropriate research design and choice of method ology<br />

(quantitative/qualitative), create a prospectus, and begin the process<br />

of developing a dissertation committee. Prerequisite: PSd 7251.<br />

PSd 7253a–B Clinical dissertation Proposal ii 2/1.5<br />

This course is designed to assist students in completing literature<br />

reviews, obtain a dissertation committee, and develop an<br />

appro priately detailed methodology section for their projects.<br />

Separate qualitative and quantitative methodology sections are<br />

provided. Students who began in fall 2006 or prior take PSd 7253A<br />

for two units. All others take PSd 7253B for 1.5 units. Prerequisite:<br />

PSd 7252.<br />

PSd 7254a–B Clinical dissertation Proposal iii 2/1.5<br />

This course designed to assist students in completing the<br />

disser tation proposal. Quantitative and qualitative sections will be<br />

offered. It is anticipated that by the end of this quarter, students will<br />

have successfully defended their dissertation proposals. Students<br />

who began prior to fall 2006 take PSd 7254A for two units. All<br />

others take PSd 7254B for 1.5 units. Prerequisite: PSd 7253.<br />

PSd 7302 dissertation Completion 0–0.5<br />

Following successful oral defense of the dissertation proposal, each<br />

student enrolls in PSd 7302 until completion of the disser tation.<br />

Students work independently under the direction of their<br />

dissertation committees with assistance from research faculty until<br />

successful final defense of the dissertation project. Course may be<br />

repeated for credit three times. After three repetitions, students must<br />

continue to enroll in PSd 7302 to completion of dissertation project.<br />

A maximum of 1.5 units will apply toward the degree program.<br />

(Students who began prior to fall 2006 may take PSd 7302 four times<br />

for credit.) Prerequisite: PSd 7253A or B and PSd 7254A or B.<br />

PSd 7309 Topics in doctoral Psychology 1–3<br />

PSd 7400 internship 4.5–9<br />

Students will apply for approved internship sites anywhere in the<br />

country that are consistent with their individual interests, training<br />

needs, and professional goals. Students will build competency in the<br />

diverse clinical skills required of a professional psychologist.<br />

Students are required to complete either one full-time, yearlong<br />

internship or two-half-time, yearlong internships completed over<br />

two years’ time.<br />

This is not a course of study but, rather, is required meetings with<br />

the training office to inform students and answer questions<br />

regarding the application and interview process for internships.<br />

For half-time internship students who either need to finish hours<br />

or attend early orientation.<br />

PSd 7995 independent Study 1–4<br />

Allows for individual study in a special interest area not offered as<br />

a regular course. To be arranged with consent of instructor and<br />

Sport Psychology [PSP] Courses<br />

PSP 5054 research Methods: Quantitative and<br />

Qualitative 3<br />

research methods allows a brief introduction to various forms of<br />

research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, with par ticular<br />

attention to qualitative methods. The course will address issues<br />

around data collection, interviewing, and data analysis. The course<br />

will encourage students to focus on research that has been used in<br />

their appropriate fields. It will help prepare students for the MA<br />

research project process and aid understanding of research once<br />

working as a practitioner.<br />

PSP 5280 fieldwork 4<br />

Covers field placement and individual and group supervision. The<br />

field-placement aspect requires students to intern at a site working<br />

with athletes and applying skills learned in the class room. Individual<br />

and group supervision involves one-on-one meetings, discussions,<br />

case presentations, and role-playing and covers ethical issues.<br />

Provides students with a supportive envi ronment for discussion and<br />

for exploring issues which pertain to their fieldwork experience.<br />

This course may be retaken for additional credit. Prerequisites: PSP<br />

5815, PSP 5816, PSP 5800A, PSP 5811, PSP 5826, PSP 5803A.<br />

PSP 5800a Sport Psychology a 3<br />

This is one of the main introductory courses in the Sport Psychology<br />

Program. It covers the main theoretical approaches in this area. The<br />

course will encourage students to begin to think critically about the<br />

research presented and how it relates to working in the field with<br />

performers. Prerequisite: PSP 5808.<br />
