PSd 7147 Multicultural Proficiency in<br />

Professional Psychology 1<br />

In year two of the integrative professional seminar, the<br />

multi-cultural dimension shifts toward examining and experiencing<br />

how integral aspects of the therapeutic interchange from diverse<br />

cultural perspectives are actually experienced in the clinical setting.<br />

Focus will be on examining clinical treatment interven tions with<br />

specific populations and exploring their relative effectiveness and<br />

the impacts on both therapist and client. Prerequisites: PSd 7008,<br />

PSd 7016, PSd 7047, and PSd 7141.<br />

PSd 7151 research Methods and Statistics i 3<br />

This course is designed to present an overview of basic research<br />

designs and methods including both qualitative and quantitative<br />

approaches to research. Additionally the course covers ethics in<br />

research, issues of cultural diversity relevant to the process of<br />

research, and an introduction to descriptive statistics and<br />

corre lational analyses.<br />

PSd 7160 Psychopharmacology 3<br />

This course offers a general overview of the applications and<br />

limitations of the use of medications to the field of clinical<br />

psychology. discussions of the basic assumptions, advantages, and<br />

possible disadvantages of pharmacology set the stage for discussions<br />

of the current use of medications for the Axis I disorders forms the<br />

bulk of the course. Lectures on the neuronal/ synaptic mechanisms<br />

of these drugs as well as the pharmacokinetic considerations of such<br />

therapy provide a practical knowledge base to help educate and<br />

prepare clients for therapy. Use of psychopharmaceuticals with<br />

diverse populations considers not only ethnic and racial diversity,<br />

but also age-related and gender diversity. The use of psychiatric<br />

medications for non-Axis I disorders and for various<br />

non-psychiatric conditions is also discussed. Finally a consideration<br />

of alternative and complementary medications concludes the<br />

course. Prerequisite: PSd 7016, PSd 7107.<br />

PSd 7170a–C Clinical neuropsychology i–iii 2–3<br />

This three-quarter long course provides a grounding in functional<br />

neuroanatomy and neuropathology in the context of how these are<br />

affect cognition, emotional, and behavior. This first quarter<br />

emphasizes functional neuroanatomy and evaluation of mental<br />

status. The second quarter delves into various neuropathologies<br />

and disorders and evaluation with the WAIS, WMS and other<br />

neuropsychological tools. The third quarter focuses on the various<br />

approaches to neuropsychological evaluation, rehabilitation issues,<br />

forensic considerations, and evaluation of higher cortical functions.<br />

Throughout the course issues of both the manifestations of various<br />

forms of pathology, and the evaluation thereof with diverse<br />

populations will be discussed as relevant. Moreover, students will<br />

have the opportunity to undergo neuropsychological evaluation for<br />

additional insight and understanding of the process. Prerequisite:<br />

PSd 7107, PSd 7115, PSd 7116, PSd 7117.<br />

PSd 7215 Consultation and education<br />

in Psychology 3<br />

This course introduces students to the consultative and educational<br />

processes and roles in the profession of psychology and their<br />

application in working with diverse populations. Students become<br />

familiar with the basic stages and processes of consultation and<br />

various ways in which professional psychologists provide<br />

consultation services. Students are also introduced to the issues and<br />

processes of teaching in the field of psychology—including but not<br />

limited to administrative duties, course, development, and course<br />

management. Prerequisite: PSd 7016, PSd 7253 A or B.<br />

PSd 7225 lifespan development i:<br />

Child and adolescent 3<br />

Covers the early years of development through adolescence with<br />

regard to intellectual, social, moral, and personal maturation. There<br />

is an emphasis on child and adolescent identity develop ment, ethnic<br />

identity development, sexual identity development, and how<br />

teenagers learn to answer the question, “Who am I?” Psychosocial<br />

issues such as violence, low self-esteem, suicide, gang involvement,<br />

body image, and drug and alcohol use will be addressed.<br />

PSd 7226 lifespan development ii:<br />

adulthood and aging 3<br />

Lifespan issues from adulthood through aging and death are<br />

discussed in this course. Theory, clinical applications, and current<br />

research on aging are emphasized. Biological, cognitive, emo tional,<br />

and social factors are considered in the contexts of culture, ethnic<br />

identity, gender, SES, and sexual orientation.<br />

PSd 7230 Management and Supervision:<br />

Self, other, and organization 3<br />

Aspects of the supervisory process are presented through the use<br />

of theoretical and case materials. Each student has the opportu nity<br />

to participate as a supervisor in training and have his or her work<br />

critiqued. This course also includes information and skills related<br />

to supervising organizations, i.e., understanding and managing<br />

multiple levels of a system including one’s own private or group<br />

clinical practice. Prerequisite: PSd 7235 (may be taken as pre- or<br />

co-requisite) and PSd 7245 (may be taken as pre- or co-requisite).<br />

PSd 7235 Practicum iii 3<br />

Practicum III gives students credit for their third-year training<br />

placement. To receive credit for PSd 7235, students must meet the<br />

terms of the placement contract, carry an adequate caseload, and<br />

receive a satisfactory evaluation by the practicum supervisor. In class,<br />

this component of the third-year integrated professional seminar<br />

revolves around case presentations and emphasizes the integration<br />

of theory into practice, case formulation, and atten tion to issues of<br />

culture, power, and oppression. This class also prepares students for<br />

their clinical proficiency examination. Prerequisite: PSd 7135.<br />

PSd 7245 Contemporary issues in Professional<br />

Psychology 1<br />

This component of the third-year IPS examines the increasingly<br />

complex interplay of legal, ethical, social, and other concerns<br />

encountered in the practice of professional psychology. Issues of<br />

diversity are highlighted. Questions, concerns, and case examples<br />

from year three practica experiences will be explored in depth.<br />

Microanalysis of case problems will be a central feature of this year’s<br />

seminar as students fine tune their clinical skills and interests.<br />

Prerequisites: PSd 7146 and PSd 7147.<br />

PSd 7250 research Methods and Statistics ii 3<br />

This course is designed to provide students with knowledge of<br />

inferential statistics through two-way AnOvA and post hoc analysis<br />

with an introduction to selected multivariate techniques. Emphasis<br />

is placed on conceptual understanding and appropriate use of<br />

statistics including knowledge of assumptions and limita tions of<br />
