The Enneagram will be presented as a model for understanding<br />

defense strategies against experiencing and expressing one’s essential<br />

self. The course will focus on developmental perspec tives and<br />

intersubjective dynamics. Co-requisite: COr 3145.<br />

iPP 5307 issues in religious Studies 1–3<br />

This course explores changing topics in religious studies such as<br />

Advaita vedanta, women’s spirituality, and creation spirituality. May<br />

be repeated for credit with a change of topic.<br />

iPP 5309 Taoism 2<br />

This course examines the origins of Taoism in Chinese culture and<br />

the thought of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. The resonance of Taoist<br />

ideas with contemporary living is also covered.<br />

iPP 5310 integral Yoga 2<br />

This course explores the integral yoga philosophy of Sri Aurobindo<br />

and Haridas Chaudhuri as an evolutionary model of psychological<br />

and spiritual growth. Course includes integration of the yogas,<br />

different levels of mind, and cellular evolution. Spiri tual principles<br />

and experiential practices are also discussed.<br />

iPP 5314 Shakti-Kundalini Yoga 2<br />

This course examines the philosophy and spiritual practice of India’s<br />

kundalini yoga as a model of human development and map of<br />

consciousness.<br />

iPP 5315 Christian Mysticism 2<br />

The course examines a variety of ancient and contemporary<br />

Christian mystics, whose spiritual quests have challenged ortho doxy<br />

and served as a basis for re-evaluating the Christian vision.<br />

iPP 5316 Jewish Mysticism 2<br />

The essentials of Judaism as presented in the Tanakh, and its<br />

expression in the movements of Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and<br />

Hasidism.<br />

iPP 5317 advaita Vedanta: Self-realization 2<br />

Advaita vedanta (the teachings of non-duality) is the meditative and<br />

psycho-philosophical system directed at the experiential recognition<br />

of the individual “I” as timeless self, sole-existing reality and<br />

being/consciousness/bliss. The direct recognition of this identity<br />

frees one from sorrow and limitations. Course investigates vedantic<br />

philosophy and meditative practices including Sri ramana<br />

Maharshi’s method of subsiding the “I” sense in the heart.<br />

iPP 5318 Seminar in Sacred Psychology<br />

and religion 1–3<br />

Topics in this seminar vary and include spiritual principles and<br />

practices from different religious traditions. Topics include integral<br />

yoga, Buddhist psychology, nature spirituality, Sufism, diamond<br />

approach, Kabbalah, and feminine spirituality among others.<br />

In-depth research and analysis of specific topics in religious studies.<br />

Topics include kundalini yoga, teachings of Jesus, and a mystic’s<br />

vision.<br />

iPP 5320 Sufism 2<br />

The course examines the development of the mystical Sufi<br />

movement in 17th-century Syria, the relationship of the Sufi<br />

movement to orthodox Islam, and Sufism’s relevance in the modern<br />

world.<br />

iPP 5326 Tibetan Buddhism 2<br />

This course explores the confluence of original Indian elements of<br />

Buddhism with tantric outlooks as well as with Persian and Chinese<br />

sources. Attention is brought to the psychology and meditative<br />

practices of the Tibetan tradition.<br />

iPP 5327 Wisdom Yoga and Buddhist Meditation 2<br />

This course explores the traditions of yoga and Buddhism from<br />

historical and modern perspectives. Practical experience of the<br />

subject matter is combined with intellectual examination. The<br />

question of spiritual awakening is woven throughout.<br />

iPP 5328 alchemy and Spiritual Practice 2<br />

In this class, the basic principles and practices of alchemy will be<br />

explored within a context of psycho-spiritual development.<br />

relevance to modern world and application to personal, social, and<br />

global issues will also be discussed.<br />

iPP 5330 Tai Chi Chuan: introduction to<br />

Principles and Practices 2<br />

Tai chi chuan, an ancient art of cultivating the body’s vital energy<br />

(called chi or Qi), is based on the Taoist philosophy of living in<br />

harmony with nature. Students will learn 17 movements of the short<br />

yang form and specific Taoist principles related to spiritual growth.<br />

iPP 5335 diamond approach 2<br />

This course explores the diamond Heart approach of A.H. Almaas.<br />

Topics include presence, essence, the theory of holes, and the<br />

relationship of object relations theory to psycho-spiritual<br />

development.<br />

iPP 5340 nature Spirituality 2<br />

Explores the historical role of nature in spiritual experience as well<br />

as practices that enhance the integration of body, mind, and spirit.<br />

iPP 5347 Spirituality, Symbols, and dreams 2<br />

In this course, we will explore dreaming as a spiritual practice. dream<br />

symbols are often powerful guides which express our human and<br />

spiritual potential. They bring insight, wisdom, life purpose, clarity,<br />

and illumination. Through readings, class discussion, and<br />

experiential exercises, we will befriend our dreaming guides and<br />

bring them to the light of day.<br />
