hSJ 5307 expressive arts Camp Prep 3<br />
Theory and practice of developing an expressive arts laboratory for<br />
children. Child development and the psychology of creativity are<br />
covered as well as the logistics of planning and implementing a camp<br />
experience. Emphasizes skills development in group facilitation and<br />
conflict resolution. required prior to field place ment at JFKU’s<br />
expressive arts camp.<br />
hSJ 5313 advanced Clinical Skills:<br />
Being the Psychotherapist 2<br />
This course, designed for third-year students in field practicum,<br />
explores the professional use of clinical interventions from somatic,<br />
transpersonal, and holistic perspectives. Case material from the<br />
trainee’s current MFT placement will serve as the starting point for<br />
discussion, role-play, dyad work, and lecture. This course is taken<br />
concurrently with the student’s third quarter of field practicum.<br />
hSJ 5315 Case Seminar: individuals 3<br />
Clinical case supervision for students in supervised field practi cum.<br />
Case presentations from the student’s current placement serve as a<br />
starting point for lecture, discussion, role-play, and self-exploration.<br />
To be taken concurrently with the student’s second quarter of<br />
supervised field practicum.<br />
hSJ 5325 Case Seminar: families 2<br />
Students in supervised field practicum develop formal case<br />
presentations of families and receive feedback from the course<br />
instructor and peers. This course enables students to compare<br />
different ways of working with families and family problems.<br />
Prerequisite: HSJ 5315. Co-requisite: HSJ 5303.<br />
hSJ 5330 Clinical Skills:<br />
Partner and Spousal abuse, elder Care 2<br />
This course looks at the whole family system and the impact of<br />
violence and abuse upon it. Trauma issues and their impact on each<br />
family member will be discussed, as well as the physiological effect<br />
of trauma on the brain. Topics include identification and treatment<br />
of abusers; victims and the children and teens living with them;<br />
attachment and physiological issues that keep couples together;<br />
identification, treatment, and reporting issues of elder and child<br />
abuse; cultural, religious, and GLBT issues and abuse; and<br />
countertransference issues. In addition, mental health issues in aging<br />
and long-term care will be addressed. Therapeutic strategies will be<br />
presented to enhance collaboration between families and care<br />
providers and maximize quality of life for the elder client.<br />
hSJ 5350 final integrative Project a 1<br />
This course examines the philosophical, personal, and profes sional<br />
issues raised in the course of graduate study in counseling<br />
psychology. Students develop an outline for an integrative paper that<br />
includes their understanding of holistic studies, transpersonal and<br />
somatic psychology, and their own personal growth work. This is the<br />
first in a two-course sequence.<br />
hSJ 5351 final integrative Project B 2<br />
This is the second in a two-course sequence. Students complete their<br />
integrative paper and give an oral presentation on their topic.<br />
Students take this course when ready to complete their paper.<br />
Prerequisites: HSJ 5350.<br />
hSJ 5520 Psychopharmacology 3<br />
This course offers an introduction and general overview of the field<br />
of psychopharmacology as it relates to the practice of psychotherapy.<br />
Current medications, research in psychopharma cology, and<br />
psychoneurology will be covered. In addition alter native medicine,<br />
natural remedies, and cultural issues from a holistic perspective will<br />
be covered as will the relationship between the psychotherapist and<br />
physician in medication man agement.<br />
hSJ 5530 Psychological Testing 3<br />
This survey course is designed to help students understand the basic<br />
concepts and applications of psychological testing and the<br />
psychometric properties of psychological tests. This course will<br />
emphasize the appropriate applications and limitations of many of<br />
the current psychological tests—especially with regard to their use<br />
with people of non-dominant cultures. Issues of validity and ethics<br />
will be reviewed in this regard.<br />
hSJ 5792 Practice of group Psychotherapy 2<br />
Students receive comprehensive training and supervision in the<br />
practice of group psychotherapy. As an MFT trainee, the student<br />
co-facilitates a weekly therapy group and participates in group<br />
supervision for two hours each week. Students learn how to plan<br />
and publicize a group as well as how to establish and maintain a<br />
therapeutic group culture.<br />
hSJ 5793 Child and adolescent<br />
Therapy in the School 2<br />
Students receive comprehensive training and supervision in the practice<br />
and treatment of children and adolescents in the school setting. As an<br />
MFT trainee, the student will work with children and adolescents and<br />
participate in group supervision for two hours each week.<br />
hSJ 5900 Topics in holistic Studies 1–3<br />
Topics vary and may be repeated for credit with a change in topic.<br />

Students must register for this course when they have completed<br />
their personal psychotherapy requirement.<br />
hSJ 9015 Child abuse assessment<br />
and reporting 0<br />
This course covers topics including recognizing child abuse, sexual<br />
abuse, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse; legal definitions<br />
of child abuse; legal reporting requirements; crisis intervention for<br />
victims, families, and abusers; cross-cultural concerns;<br />
countertransference issues; and community resources.<br />
hSJ 9020 Special Topics 0<br />
This course is reserved for students who have returned to the<br />
program after an absence or who have transferred into this program<br />
from another program. This zero unit course offers no academic<br />
credit, but allows students to enter into the appropriate course at the<br />
department’s discretion. Students enrolling in this course will attend<br />
the same sessions and be responsible for the same assignments as<br />
students enrolling in the appropriate course. Permission of the<br />
program is required to take this course. Offered as needed; credit/no<br />
credit only.<br />
