The amount of credit awarded for a ClEP examination depends<br />

upon a number of variables including the number of units and<br />

distribution of units previously accepted in transfer, prior courses<br />

completed, where prior transfer units were completed, and current<br />

status relative to the <strong>University</strong>’s residency policy.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> does not allow credit for a ClEP examination if<br />

(1) the exam content would duplicate transfer credit previously<br />

awarded for a college course or (2) the exam content is at an<br />

academic level below one at which the student has previously<br />

demonstrated competence (academic regression). Units awarded<br />

for ClEP examination do not fulfill residency requirements. The<br />

registrar’s office should be contacted regarding the transferability<br />

and applicability of ClEP tests.<br />

Corporate or Government Agency Courses<br />

The american Council on Education (aCE) reviews selected<br />

courses offered by corporations or government agencies. The<br />

<strong>University</strong> considers aCE credit recommendations for courses<br />

applicable to a student’s degree program.<br />

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)<br />

Credit may be allowed for Dsst exams with consideration given<br />

to aCE recommendations. The amount of credit awarded depends<br />

Military Service<br />

Credit for military service may be allowed with consideration<br />

given to aCE recommendations. a DD214, DD295, or official<br />

military transcript form is required to consider credit for military<br />

service. a maximum of six quarter units will be allowed for<br />

military basic training. <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a member of<br />

servicemembers opportunity Colleges (soC).<br />

Registered Nurse’s Training<br />

Effective fall 2007, transfer credit may be granted for nursing<br />

courses taken at a <strong>University</strong>, community college, or hospitalbased<br />

RN program. Courses will be reviewed on a case-by-case<br />

basis for eligibility. students need not have graduated from their<br />

nursing program to have their coursework considered for transfer;<br />

however, all other <strong>University</strong> requirements and credit limits apply.<br />

vocational courses taken in lPN or lvN programs are not eligible<br />

for transfer.<br />

For nursing courses transferred prior to fall 2007, a maximum of<br />

90 quarter units may be allowed upon evaluation of hospital-based<br />

nursing school transcripts and presentation of a current California<br />

nurse’s registry card. Nursing coursework taken at a <strong>University</strong><br />

or community college will be considered for transfer credit up<br />

to the 105 quarter-unit maximum with presentation of a current<br />

California nurse’s registry card.<br />

Second Baccalaureate Degree<br />

Normally, a student who has a bachelor’s degree is discouraged<br />

from working toward a second degree at the baccalaureate level.<br />

however, changes in academic objectives and other circumstances<br />

may make a second bachelor’s degree desirable. students are never<br />

permitted to enroll in any degree program that is the same as or<br />

closely related to a previously earned degree at the same level.<br />

to obtain a second undergraduate degree, an applicant must<br />

complete at least 45 units of new work beyond the first degree,<br />

fulfill all <strong>University</strong> requirements for a bachelor’s degree (including<br />

the 36-unit residency requirement), and any requirements in the<br />

major for the second degree that were not previously completed.<br />

Graduate Applicants<br />

applicants to graduate programs must submit official transcripts<br />

from the bachelor degree-awarding institution(s), and any postbachelor<br />

degree institution including any master’s degrees or<br />

credits. applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from an<br />

institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for<br />

higher Education accreditation (ChEa), except for applicants to<br />

the Doctor of Psychology programs, which require a bachelor’s<br />

degree from a regionally accredited institution.<br />

Graduate Transfer Credit<br />

transfer credit may be awarded for applicable graduate courses<br />

completed at other institutions whose accreditation is recognized<br />

by the ChEa with verification of transferability by the registrar’s<br />

office and approval by the program chair. The Doctor of Psychology<br />

and the Ma Counseling Psychology program in the College of<br />

Professional studies require graduate transfer work to have been<br />

completed at a regionally accredited institution. at least 70 percent<br />

of the work required for a graduate degree must be completed in<br />

residence at the <strong>University</strong>; some programs may require a residency<br />

greater than 70 percent.<br />

Graduate-level courses will be considered for transfer credit if<br />

relevant to the degree program and completed with a grade of B<br />

(or equivalent) or higher. Graduate transfer credit and prerequisite<br />

credit may be denied if the course was taken as pass/fail, credit/<br />

no credit, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, or another grading system<br />

without letter grades.<br />

Graduate transfer credit is not allowed for undergraduate<br />

coursework or for continuing education units and non-credit<br />

workshops. Graduate coursework applied toward completion of<br />

another degree will not be considered for transfer except for the<br />

Doctor of Psychology program which may consider transfer credit<br />

from a relevant master’s degree.<br />

a maximum of nine quarter units from graduate-level extension<br />

courses may be allowed toward a master’s degree. Graduate<br />

transfer credit is not allowed into linked-degree programs or into<br />

certificate programs.<br />
