Explores the major Western philosophical approaches to<br />

under standing the relationship between body and mind as well as<br />

the nature of truth and reality, postmodern cosmology, and process<br />

This course will present the requirements and expectations for key<br />

professional courses in the second and third year of the program.<br />

This course will prepare students for CnS 5126–27 Qualitative<br />

research A–B, externship, and the final integrative project or thesis.<br />

Students will begin to explore how to connect and extend their<br />

education and coursework into areas of profes sional application.<br />

CnS 5120 diversity, Community,<br />

and Consciousness 3<br />

This course presents a 21st-century approach to social issues and<br />

includes discussion of racial, ethnic, and cultural differences along<br />

with ways to build community, harmony, and understand ing—<br />

diversity in oneness. Prerequisite: IPP 5013.<br />

CnS 5126 Qualitative research a 1<br />

This course provides students with an introduction to the basics and<br />

applications of several qualitative research methodologies. Students<br />

examine the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative versus<br />

quantitative approaches and are asked to explore the implications in<br />

terms of master’s-level research. discussion and exercises in class are<br />

geared toward pursuing and developing a research question or topic,<br />

discovering its fit with the method ologies introduced in this course,<br />

and opening it up with various research skills (triangulation,<br />

searching the literature, data collec tion, etc.).Prerequisite: CnS 5199.<br />

CnS 5127 Qualitative research B 2<br />

This course continues the multi-perspective approach of CnS 5126<br />

into a deeper understanding of how these approaches and skills<br />

translate into a key component of the course—developing the actual<br />

research proposal. Students will also survey the research process<br />

from proposal stage through completion and discuss effective ways<br />

to present the research findings. Prerequi site: CnS 5126.<br />

CnS 5200 Seminar in Consciousness Studies 1–3<br />

In-depth research and analysis of specific topics in consciousness<br />

studies. Class format consists of lectures, self-directed study, and<br />

group discussions. Includes such topics as chaos and complexity<br />

theory, myth and archetype, and ecopsychology.<br />

CnS 5215 integral approach to dreamwork 2<br />

A multidimensional, holistic perspective of dreamwork that includes<br />

multiple ways of gaining insights into the nature and meaning of<br />

dreams. We will explore how dreams affect our body, emotions,<br />

mind, spirit, and community. Ken Wilber’s four-quadrant model will<br />

also be discussed in relation to levels of consciousness, dream work,<br />

and the practitioner’s worldview.<br />

CnS 5216 lucid dreaming 2<br />

Lucid dreaming is the act of becoming conscious while dreaming. In<br />

this course, scientific research in the field of lucid dreaming will be<br />

explored and students will learn methods to become conscious in<br />

sleep. This course will interweave cognitive, experi mental, and<br />

experiential approaches to explore this state of consciousness.<br />

Participants in the class will share and work with dreams, drawing<br />

upon contemporary theories and practices in the field of dream<br />

studies.<br />

and Consciousness 1–3<br />

In-depth research and analysis of specific topics in science and<br />

consciousness. Topics may include genetics, chaos, synchronicity,<br />

complexity, and biology of consciousness.<br />

CnS 5280 dreams, archetypes,<br />

and Personal Mythology 2<br />

In this course, students will explore the recurrent dream arche types<br />

that help dreamers become aware of themes generating a personal<br />

mythology for one’s life.<br />

CnS 5282 dreams: initiation and<br />

indigenous Ways of Knowing 2<br />

Everyone carries ancestral knowledge memory deep within. Through<br />

myths and dreams, individuals are able to recover innate wisdom<br />

present and potential in the environment. With the world of dreams<br />

and myth, all beings hold equal potency and potential. This state of<br />

awareness or animated knowing is “native mind.” This course offers<br />

students an opportunity to begin a journey of recovery in ancestral<br />

ways of knowing. Through dreams and myths, students explore<br />

initiation into native mind.<br />

CnS 5284 Consciousness and Sustainability:<br />

Solutions for the 21st Century 2<br />

This course explores the issues, theories, research, and practices in<br />

order to understand/take action on healing and “greening” the<br />

planet. Students will examine the current practices and approaches<br />

in ecology and sustainability that are making a differ ence and<br />

improving the planet. Students will select a topic of interest in the<br />

area of sustainability to research, focusing on innovative practices<br />

currently being explored or developed. Prerequisite: CnS 5010.<br />

CnS 5300 Sacred intention, Sacred Manifestation 1<br />

Examines the sacred dimension and importance of clarifying<br />

intentions and values. Course also addresses the existential meaning<br />

of will and intentionality and their role in directing consciousness,<br />

dispelling confusion, empowering vision, and creating a new reality.<br />

CnS 5344 dream groups:<br />

facilitation and ethics 2<br />

This course explores the ethical implications of working with dreams<br />

in a group setting. Students also examine issues of cultural, gender,<br />

and class bias in regard to dream work. Students have the<br />

opportunity to gain hands-on experience leading a dream group.<br />

CnS 5345 Shamanism and dreams 1<br />

This course explores the role of dreams in shamanic traditions. Major<br />

topics include receiving the “calls” in dreams, healing, dream<br />

interpretation, the role of shamans, shamanic misconcep tions, and<br />

the rise of urban shamanism and ethics. Shamanic states of<br />

consciousness and the practice of drumming as a tool for entering<br />

the dream state will be introduced. This class will be held on the<br />

Berkeley campus.<br />
