a&C 5010 image and Process 3<br />
Students in this course investigate the formal integration of art and<br />
inner awareness. Exploration of artistic paradigms from a variety of<br />
cultures and historical periods creates a broadened base for<br />
understanding artistic growth and development. Integration of these<br />
principles into individual artwork is stressed. Through intensive<br />
studio assignments, readings, and class discussions, a common<br />
vocabulary of artistic dialogue is developed.<br />
a&C 5100 introduction to Transformative arts 3<br />
This course will introduce students to the various methodologies and theories<br />
related to the use of art and personal creativity as healing forces in the world.<br />
A wide variety of topics—including psychological, spiritual, and shamanic<br />
approaches to artwork and its relationship to the healing process—will be<br />
examined. Stu dents will be led through a variety of experiential projects<br />
intended to offer insight into art and its uses as more than a mere decorative<br />
or academic exercise. Students are encouraged to draw from their own<br />
experiences of creativity and expression as a basis for work in the class.<br />
a&C 5200 Transformative arts education 1–3<br />
Students choose among selected topics investigating the uses of<br />
creativity as a vehicle for human growth and healing. various<br />
courses will explore aspects of creativity related to teaching,<br />
personal spiritual practice, physical healing, and emotional<br />
counseling. By participating in a variety of creative modalities,<br />
students simultaneously strengthen their own creative processes<br />
and form a basis for future professional practice.<br />
a&C 5255 Transformative arts Seminar 3<br />
This seminar is based on in-class presentation of students’ creative<br />
work. Group dialogue focuses on issues of personal growth and<br />
healing implicit in the student’s creative expression. The instructor<br />
facilitates meaningful insights into each student’s work as well as<br />
leading discussion of practical implications of work discussed as it<br />
pertains to work in the community. Students are introduced to<br />
advanced theories of transformative arts. Class assignments and<br />
readings are given to help accentuate the link between creative<br />
process and work with others.<br />
a&C 5260 Transformative arts Teaching Practicum 3<br />
The field of transformative arts offers a new way to think of teaching<br />
as a primary activity related to the promotion of human growth.<br />
Students combine theoretical information with hands-on experience<br />
of teaching. Class lectures introduce relevant material to be used as<br />
the basis for a practical demonstration by each student of an<br />
approach to teaching that is directly related to that student’s own<br />
experience of the transformative power of creative expression. A<br />
written proposal for a course or community arts project is required.<br />
a&C 5300 applied alchemy 3<br />
An introduction to the transformational symbolic image system of<br />
alchemy and its powerful applications to studio art-making.<br />
discussion of historical alchemical processes and the modern use of<br />
alchemical metaphor and symbol in art. This course includes<br />
assigned reading and studio assignments.<br />
a&C 5305 art and altered States of Consciousness 2<br />
This course introduces subtle states of consciousness and altered<br />
states of consciousness where inspiration, creativity, and insight<br />
might arise. Students explore practices meant to access states of<br />
heightened lucidity and multidimensional awareness. This class<br />
requires studio exercises involving music, movement, and visual arts<br />
as well as lecture, readings, and written assignments.<br />
a&C 5307 Visual Communications a 3<br />
An introduction to the skills and conceptual foundations of effective<br />
visual communications. Using a combination of digital and<br />
traditional art materials, the class will explore the technical tools and<br />
philosophical assumptions regarding the nature of communication<br />
through symbol, image, text, color, and compo sition. Through<br />
weekly assignments and critiques, class members will develop skills<br />
and insights needed for further exploration of the field. Basic<br />
competence in appropriate digital media will be a central outcome<br />
as will broadened awareness and ability in the use of cultural<br />
signifiers and signs in visual art.<br />
a&C 5308 Visual Communications B 3<br />
Continuation of work in A&C 5307, this course emphasizes advanced<br />
skills in digital image-making. develops further ability to integrate<br />
conceptual skills into development of powerful and effective visual<br />
images. Expands digital skills to include website design and the use<br />
of appropriate software for the creation of basic online venues for<br />
visual communication. Individual projects and individual work with<br />
the instructor strengthen the links between graphic work and<br />
primary artistic interests and direction for each student. Students<br />
develop improved technical ability and clearly marketable career<br />
skills in design and digital art.<br />
a&C 5310 art and the Symbolic Process 3<br />
Students in this course explore the philosophy of symbolism.<br />
Philosophical and experiential insight into the nature of symbol from<br />
a variety of cultural and individual perspectives is the goal. Students<br />
are led to the discovery of their own archetypal visual vocabulary<br />
through a combination of personal practice and the academic<br />
investigation essential to creative process. Experiential exercises,<br />
required reading, and written project. required for MA and MFA.<br />
a&C 5312 Creativity and Consciousness 3<br />
Students will engage the essential questions associated with the<br />
creative process: “Why do we make art? What is the mystery<br />
substance emerging from emptiness? What is creativity?” In- and<br />
out-of-class studio assignments, group discussions, and assigned<br />
readings help students explore the essence of their individual creative<br />
process from cultural, psychological, and spiritual perspectives. Class<br />
will emphasize development of personal approaches to creative<br />
process and the identification and elimi nation to blocks to creativity.<br />

a&C 5315 dreams and the arts 3<br />
This course explores the connection between the dreaming mind and<br />
the act of creation. Slide lectures, experiential exercises, and studio<br />
work will help students understand the transition between symbolic<br />
dream imagery and the multidimensional spaces of the inner world.<br />
reading, written project and studio assignments are required.<br />
a&C 5325 faces of the Soul 3<br />
Students undergo an intensive exploration of the relationship<br />
