College of Professional Studies College of Professional Studies Who LEAP Works With • Student Athletes. The LEAP program works with at-risk high school student-athletes. The overall goal of the LEAP pro gram is to work with athletic teams on the field and in the classroom helping students, teachers, and coaches build a positive environment where learning is possible. Through working with the athletic teams, the LEAP program provides students with an opportunity to receive academic support and life-skills education and in the athletic arena to learn team-building skills and sport psychology techniques to improve their performance on the field. • Challenge Camp. The LEAP Challenge Camp works with youth at Orin Allen youth rehabilitation Facility (OAyrF). The core philosophy of the LEAP Challenge Camp is to help juvenile offenders focus on their future. Through an interac tive games environment, the LEAP Challenge Camp provides youth with an opportunity to build social skills; learn coop eration, communication and listening skills; to practice prob lem-solving, decision-making and planning skills; and to learn appropriate outlets for anger and stress. • Sport Specific Camp. The LEAP Sport Specific Camp focuses on working with girls in sport. The camps provide an opportunity for girls to learn mental strategies that they can use both in the sporting arena and in their life. Team building, communication and group problem solving skills, positive self-talk, and goal setting are the focal point of the camp. These skills are taught to the girls through participation in their sport and then transferred to the classroom and their life. • Life Skills Workshops. The LEAP Life Skills workshops work with at-risk children and adolescents in the Pittsburg com munity. Through an interactive and non-traditional games environment, youth are taught life skills to help them make better choices and navigate the obstacles and stressors they face in life. 114 College of Professional Studies JOHn F. Certificate Programs The Sport Psychology program offers certificates in Sport Management and Exercise and Sport Performance. Sport Management The field of sport management is a rapidly growing field. The sports industry, which encompasses recreational sports, club sports, athletic clubs, <strong>University</strong> athletics as well as professional sports, grows each year, and the need for trained professional increases from year to year. With this Sport Management certifi cate, students may pursue careers in organizations such as sport event planning, professional sports, <strong>University</strong> athletic programs, and in-club sport associations.
