Ma Museum Studies/
Master of Business administration
The College of Professional Studies is proud to offer a joint
MA/MBA degree in museum studies. Students completing this
three year curriculum of full time study will receive two master’s
degrees: an MA in Museum Studies and an MBA. Students may
also enroll part-time. Museum Studies courses are offered on
JFKU’s Berkeley Campus; MBA courses are offered in Pleasant Hill,
with occasional meetings on the Berkeley Campus as well as online.
The curriculum is designed to build students’ core skills in both
disciplines and prepare them for leadership positions in museums as
manager, administrators and directors. It emphasizes the flexible
inter-disciplinary thinking and creative problem solving and visioning
necessary to sustain museums’ missions and financial viability.
The curriculum for the program is organized as follows:
• First two quarters of the program: foundational museum studies
courses in museum history, finance, visitor experience and
collections management
• Final quarter of the first year: a capstone course in Museums and
Communities and begin MBA studies with a course in Systems
Analysis
• First summer quarter and continuing into the second year of
study: complete core coursework for the MBA degree, including
courses in economics, accounting, marketing and business
ethics, among others
• Second summer quarter: internship at a museum
• Third year of program: coursework in museums and interactive
technologies, exhibition development and a master’s thesis that
blends the theory and practice of management and museum
studies.
