Individuals interested in taking only one or two courses may do so<br />

as non-degree students if space is available. non-degree students<br />

must hold a bachelor’s degree and have an interview with the<br />

program chair before enrolling in courses.<br />

admission requirements<br />

Applicants must meet all <strong>University</strong> requirements for admission<br />

in addition to the requirements listed here.<br />

• Interview with program faculty member. Museum Studies will<br />

contact applicants to arrange for an interview after the<br />

application file is complete. Telephone interviews will be<br />

arranged for applicants who live outside the Bay Area.<br />

• Bachelor’s degree from an institution whose accreditation is<br />

recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accredita tion<br />

(CHEA).<br />

• Personal statement: a double-spaced, three-page (typed) essay,<br />

carefully edited for content, grammar, and style that answers<br />

the following questions:<br />

• What is the role of the museum in today’s world?<br />

• Given your response to question one, describe your spe cific<br />

career goals.<br />

• How has your education and experience prepared you for<br />

graduate study in museum studies?<br />

• Three letters of recommendation.<br />

• Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.<br />

• International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score<br />

of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based<br />

test, or 100 on the Internet-based test with a minimum score<br />

of 4.5 in the writing section.<br />

The priority application deadline is February 15. Late applications<br />

will be considered on a case-by-case basis if space is available.<br />

Appli cants for the master’s degree are admitted only for the fall<br />

quarter.<br />

Ma in Museum Studies<br />

The program offers a Master of Arts in Museum Studies with three<br />

specializations—administration, collections management, and<br />

education and interpretation. The administration specialization<br />

covers financial management, fundraising, marketing, and<br />

administration. Collections management trains individuals to<br />

manage and care for collections. Education and Interpretation<br />

trains students to interpret collections, develop an understanding<br />

of diverse audiences and their needs, plan and develop exhibi tions,<br />

and design education programs in museums.<br />

All students complete the core curriculum, specialization courses,<br />

and internships offering independent, individualized study in a<br />

museum or museum-related institution. The master’s program<br />

concludes with a master’s project, which allows students to explore<br />

in depth a specific area of interest in a museum or related<br />

organization.<br />

In addition to the <strong>University</strong>’s general requirements (outlined in<br />

the General Information section of this catalog), students must also<br />

complete the following:<br />

• Upon admission, all students must demonstrate writing<br />

competency as determined by program evaluation of writ ing<br />

ability. Some students may be required to take courses in writing<br />

in addition to the 58-unit requirement for the degree.<br />

• Prerequisite courses as identified at the time of the student’s<br />

admission. Students desiring to specialize in administration<br />

must demonstrate that they have completed two undergraduate<br />

courses in accounting.<br />

• no more than six graduate units will be accepted in transfer. See<br />

the program advisor for specific limitations on transfer credit.<br />

• This degree program must be completed within five years of the<br />

initial date of enrollment.<br />

1 Under the supervision of a project coordinator, each student develops a project that reflects his or her expertise in a special subject area and demon strates<br />

understanding and application of museum studies theory and practice, analytical and imaginative thinking, and mastery of research methods and writing<br />

skills. All students must demonstrate proficiency in writing and research prior to beginning the master’s project. These courses must be completed with a<br />

grade of B or better. The master’s project, including the oral presentation, must be completed in residence at <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
