College of Professional Studies College of Professional Studies entrance standards of JFKU, admission requires the following: • A writing sample (five to ten pages, double-spaced) • Two letters of recommendation • A five- to ten-page, double-spaced personal statement that discusses one’s use of integral principles in life. • International applicants whose native language is not English must comply with JFKU standards. requirements relating to the Foreign Student Financial Statement and immigration status are not applicable. If foreign students decide to attend the annual face-to-face gatherings, they are responsible for obtaining visa and making travel arrangements. Curriculum The online Integral Theory certificate program is delivered using a cohort system in which a strong sense of community emerges among students. A cohort of 10 to 24 students begins every fall and progresses through the program at the same rate. Students take on average six units each quarter for four quarters (one year). This part-time format is ideal for working adults and students who have full-time careers or families and allows more time for student integration of the course material. The online delivery also offers round-the-clock course access, providing students maximum scheduling flexibility. There are two face-to-face meetings each year—one in the fall, and one in the spring. These gatherings last three to five days. One takes place in denver (where the Integral Institute is located) and the other in the San Francisco Bay Area (where JFKU is located). Courses comprising the 25-unit certificate are divided into two categories—core theory courses and core element courses. A core theory course is offered each quarter, providing the theo retical foundations for the integral model. Core element courses (also taught each quarter) provide professional development by training students to successfully apply the integral model to personal and professional goals and purposes. We emphasize visionary, participatory leadership and strategic thinking from a global viewpoint that values innovation, sustainability and diversity. Grounded in a humanistic, interdisciplinary, systems-based and socially responsible approach to leadership and entrepreneurship, JFKU’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program focuses on shaping leaders who can foresee issues, understand their complex causes, shape viable plans and solutions that benefit current and future generations, and gain the support to effectively implement them. The program accommodates both experienced business professionals and individuals who have acquired significant organizational and administrative experience in a non-business setting. The MBA program provides students with a solid understanding of individual, group, and organizational behavior; financial analysis and management; quantitative decision making and other analytical skills; practical ethics in the business arena; strategic planning and implementation; marketing theory and practices; the management of change; the impact of technology; and international issues and the expanding global economy. Specializations While students master a core of knowledge in the MBA program, they also explore their particular interests in one of the following areas of specialization: Leadership, Strategic Management, Program Management, or an individually planned specialization. Individually planned specializations give students a chance to create a customized specialization which would help in their career path. Individually planned specializations may be a cross-disciplinary concentration integrating more than one school. refer to the General Information section of this catalog for more information about designing an individualized program. admission requirements College of Professional Studies In addition to the University’s requirements, applicants to the MBA program must possess a bachelor’s degree from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher education Accreditation (CHEA). Applicants must submit a JFK University application along with a statement of purpose that includes a discussion of 1) personal qualities and professional experiences that qualify one to participate in an MBA program, 2) why JFKU’s MBA Program—philosophy, content and instructional style— is the best MBA program for one’s career path, 3) how JFKU’s MBA degree will enable one to grow as a person and professional, 4) what potential career opportunities this degree could open up, and 5) one’s commitment to studying for an MBA at this time. The statement of purpose should be at least three double-spaced, typewritten pages. Besides providing vital professional background and academic study intentions, the statement of purpose serves as an initial opportunity to assess an applicant’s graduate level writing and analysis skills. Upon admission or within the first three quarters of the MBA program after taking several courses, if a student’s writing skill level is deemed to need improvement, a student may be required by the Program Chair to take BUS 5000 Management Communications in addition to the required 48 units. Finally, applicants must submit a resume of work experience detailing professional background. While the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is usually not required for admission, the school may require the applicant to take the exam in some cases.
