The Good Life, a short novel by UAM<br />

faculty member Dr. Mark Spencer and<br />

his wife, Rebecca, has been accepted for<br />

public<strong>at</strong>ion in the online literary journal<br />

Admit Two.<br />

Spencer is a pr<strong>of</strong>essor and dean <strong>of</strong><br />

the School <strong>of</strong> Arts and Humanities <strong>at</strong><br />

UAM. He has published two novels in<br />

print form – Love and Reruns in Adams<br />

County (Random House), and The Weary<br />

Motel (Backw<strong>at</strong>ers Press), as well as two<br />

collections <strong>of</strong> short stories and over 100<br />

articles and stories in various n<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

and intern<strong>at</strong>ional journals. Spencer has<br />

received the Faulkner Society’s Faulkner<br />

Award for The Short Novel, the Omaha<br />

Prize for The Novel, the Bradshaw Book<br />

Award, the Cairn-St. Andrews Press<br />

Short Fiction Award, and four “Special<br />

Mentions” in Pushcart Prize: Best <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Small Presses. The Good Life is his first<br />

collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with his wife, Rebecca.<br />

Rebecca Spencer is a homemaker,<br />

freelance photojournalist, and a newsletter<br />

correspondent for the Oklahoma<br />

chapter <strong>of</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ional charity Newborns<br />

in Need.<br />

According to Spencer, The Good Life<br />

is the story <strong>of</strong> a 66-year-old farmer/school<br />

teacher/part-time moving man named<br />

Fowood, who reflects on the successes,<br />

disappointments, moral righteousness,<br />

and missed opportunities <strong>of</strong> his life while<br />

contempl<strong>at</strong>ing the meaning <strong>of</strong> a good life.<br />

The Good Life will be published in two to<br />

three installments in Admit Two beginning<br />

in January.<br />

Admit Two is an intern<strong>at</strong>ional online<br />

literary journal published every other<br />

month and can be accessed on the internet<br />

<strong>at</strong> www.admit2.net.<br />

once again th<strong>at</strong> UAM’s forestry<br />

program can compete with the big boys.<br />

Hartley <strong>of</strong> Pine Bluff, Kimberly Pedigo<br />

<strong>of</strong> Star City, and Seth Glaze <strong>of</strong> Camden<br />

– all forestry students <strong>at</strong> UAM – defe<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

student teams from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Florida, Allegheny College, Michigan<br />

Tech, Auburn, and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-Stevens<br />

Point to win the Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> American Foresters N<strong>at</strong>ional Quiz<br />

Bowl competition held last fall <strong>at</strong> the<br />

annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the SAF in Pittsburgh,<br />

Pa.<br />

Student teams from 32 colleges and<br />

universities across the country competed<br />

in the annual event.<br />

“This is a tremendous achievement for<br />

our students and a very positive reflection<br />

on our program,” said Dr. Richard<br />

Kluender, dean <strong>of</strong> the UAM School <strong>of</strong><br />

Forest Resources. “We are very proud <strong>of</strong><br />

their accomplishments.”<br />

The Quiz Bowl consisted <strong>of</strong> five<br />

rounds <strong>of</strong> competition. UAM defe<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

Florida 15-10 in the opening round,<br />

Allegheny 25-15 in the second round,<br />

Michigan Tech 15-10 in the third round,<br />

Auburn 15-5 in the fourth round, and took<br />

a one-sided 20-5 win over Wisconsin-Stevens<br />

Point in the finals.<br />

“Possibly the most impressive thing<br />

about our students’ performance was<br />

th<strong>at</strong> none <strong>of</strong> the rounds were th<strong>at</strong> close,”<br />

said Kluender. “We were able to win<br />

comfortably in each round. I think this<br />

speaks volumes about the quality <strong>of</strong> our<br />

faculty and the job they do in preparing<br />

our students for success in forest resource<br />

management.”<br />

Vickers, Pedigo and Glaze are senior<br />

forestry majors while Hartley is a gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

student.<br />
