Singh UAM Loses Four Members Of Its “Family” Barbara Babin Gene Dillard David Lanphier Eddie Earl Stone UAM lost four members of its extended family in recent weeks with the passing of Barbara Babin, wife of former A&M president and UAM Chancellor Claude Babin, and long-time faculty members Gene Dillard, David Lanphier, and Eddie Earl Stone. Mrs. Babin passed away December 6, 2006. She and her husband, Dr. Claude H. Babin, moved to Monticello in 954, where her husband was employed by Arkansas A&M (and later UAM) as a professor of history, president, and first chancellor of UAM. David Lanphier was a fixture on the UAM campus for 40 years, joining the faculty in 963 and retiring in 2003. He was a speech teacher and head of the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts from 965-78. He passed away September 8, 2006. Eddie Earl Stone was a member of the faculty for 32 years as an instructor of English, joining the faculty in 965 and retiring in 997. He passed away September 6, 2006. A&M Memories “Doorknob” Remembers Life at A&M in the late ‘30’s (The following article was written by James R. Clark of Grapevine, Texas. Clark is a 1940 graduate of Arkansas A&M College and earned an M.S. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He is 89 years old, a World War II veteran, and married to Julia Holland of Glendale for 65 years. Clark retired as superintendent of schools in Ranger, Texas after 36 years in the teaching.) When I went to Monticello A&M, there was no one who needed college like I did. My life turned around at A&M. When I was a junior at Fordyce High School, I was 4- , weighed 95 pounds and was tongue-tied. Because I was a runt, I didn’t play football. Our football team had Paul “Bear” Bryant, Jim Benton, and other large men. I never had a date in high school or went to a party. I think they invited me just to be nice. I was laughed at so much that I buried myself in reading books. I could read six to eight books a day. I read more books in the county library than anyone in Dallas County but I was too bashful to let them put a picture of me in the county paper. I graduated from Fordyce in 935 but I laid out of school a year to grow. It was during the Depression when I went to A&M in the summer of 936 with 0 dollars in my pocket and two pair of long pants. Most of my earlier clothes were knickers like golfers wore. Tuition was $465 a year and most of us needed jobs to pay our way through school. For the next four years I had many jobs as I worked my way through A&M. My first job was killing peach borers in the campus trees. Then I painted rooms in Harris Hall. Later they made me assistant trainer in football. I took up student laundry for Ford Laundry in Warren, hand-lettered leather jackets with a boll weevil under the words Arkansas A&M, worked in the campus bookstore making sodas and buying and selling books, and graded papers for Coach Stewart Ferguson. Also, I repaired ladies shoes, which I learned how to do working in the Clark’s Shoe Shop in Fordyce. At one time I was janitor and morning wood stove lighter for Miss Ellen Knight at the training school. She had taught me in the first grade in Fordyce. I also wrote for the Weevil Outlet, the campus newspaper. I wrote a regular column of general news and an unnamed gossip column, and sent articles to the Arkansas Democrat. I typed term papers for 0 cents a page and then learned that I could make more money actually ghost writing term papers. I read the daily lesson to Dr. Horace Adams, chairman of Social Science, who had very poor vision. I also checked every reference on student’s themes. Then I helped Dr. Adams write an article that was published in the Southwest Historical Journal. When I went to Monticello, who would think I would make campus fame by painting a commode seat? But the commode seat was in the home of President Marvin Bankston. Work superintendent Weldon Abbott told me to paint the Bankston’s bathroom while they were out of town. To me that meant every thing, so I painted the woodwork and commode seat. The Bankstons returned home sooner than expected and Mrs. Bankston went straight to the bathroom. You can guess what happened. President Bankston liked to tell the story about what “Doorknob,” my nickname, had done and that story lasted all my first year as an Aggie in 936. How does the University for Arkansas at Monticello today compare with Arkansas A&M in 936 to 940? There is absolutely no comparison. Today UAM is a large institution with a large administrative staff and a huge staff of instructors. Back then we had three administrators. President Marvin Bankston was all over the campus daily, talking to students or visitors. C. C. Smith was the business manager. I would go to him to get a meal ticket on credit. Ira Hutchinson was dean and registrar. My sister, Margaret, was secretary for Dr. Bankston but during the war she served as registrar for Dean Hutchinson, who went into the service with the Second Battalion 206th Coast Artillery. This was an adequate staff for about 350 students. Freshman initiation was expected. Seniors told all freshmen to line up on the sidewalk between Harris Hall and Horsfall Hall. They ran us down the belt line twice and then proceeded to cut our hair near the scalp. Someone noticed that my hair was longer than the others, so they shaved my head. Someone remarked that my head looked like a doorknob and from then on “Doorknob” was all the student body called me. My parents drove over from Fordyce on Sunday and asked for James Clark. No one knew that name. Finally my parents asked for “Doorknob” and a student told them that I had the corner room in Sorrells Hall. It was customary for the freshmen to throw the seniors in the campus lake. My senior year I told all seniors to spread the word to meet on the roof of the Fine Arts tower at 0 p.m. They were to bring food and drinks but no cigarettes. About 0 to midnight all freshmen got master keys and went from room to room in all the dorms looking for us. We watched the lights go on and off in each room as they searched for us. They even went to the farm and downtown looking for us. Then they discovered where we were hiding because one senior lit a cigarette. When the freshmen spotted the light from the cigarette, they tried to get up to the top of the tower but we simply stood on the trapdoor. When classes started that morning they left a guard to watch us. I had the bright idea that we go down and throw the guard in the lake. Word spread that we were down from the tower and the campus bell started tolling and all classes headed for the lake. We headed back to the tower but they captured “Fellow” Brown. So we went back to rescue Brown but soon realized it was hopeless. Then all the seniors and freshmen decided to join arms and walked into the lake together. When I graduated from A&M in 940, no newspaper would hire me because I had no courses in journalism and no experience as a full-time employee of a printed paper. Then I was interviewed by C. E. Palmer who owned a chain of newspapers in three states. He was very impressed with my samples of work and hired me on the spot at $85 a month. At the last minute I changed my mind and took a job that paid $60 for eight months as a teacher in the Glendale ISD. That was where I met my wife and was the beginning of a long career in the teaching profession. I owe my success as a school administrator to Arkansas A&M. They turned a bashful boy with no future into a self-confident leader. My life completely turned around at Monticello A&M.
