From the Chancellor
I
t was a rewarding fall semester at UAM. We are proud to announce that our enrollment reached
an all-time high of 3,186. Now that we’ve completed another enjoyable holiday season, we are
looking forward to the new year with excitement and optimism. A big part of that optimism
comes from your overwhelming support of the college bond initiative which will direct muchneeded
new revenue to Arkansas’ colleges and universities. UAM will use its share of the funds to
connect to the e-corridor high-speed internet network; upgrade the university-wide data network to
meet the educational and administrative mission of the institution; install advanced technology and
communication support for our campuses in Monticello, Crossett and McGehee; and replace our
outdated administrative and instructional software system.
We are also looking forward to this year’s legislative session when we
welcome two new members – Robert Moore of Arkansas City and Eddie
Cheatham of Crossett – to the Southeast Arkansas delegation. We are fortunate
to have strong support and representation in the General Assembly from Senators
Jimmy Jeffress of Crossett and Jerry Taylor of Pine Bluff and Representatives
Greg Reep of Warren, Allen Maxwell of Monticello, and David Rainey of Dumas.
We also enjoy the support of two UAM alumni serving in the General Assembly:
Representative Tommy Dickinson of Newport and Senator Gene Jeffress of
Louann.
In March, Vice Chancellor Yeiser and I will join a delegation from Monticello
who will travel to Washington D.C. to meet with U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and
Blanche Lincoln as well as Congressman Mike Ross to continue our discussions
concerning the foremost needs of southeast Arkansas. While we are in the D.C.
area we will attend a reception on March 3 for UAM/A&M alumni and friends in
the Baltimore area to be hosted by alumnus Marty Brutscher and his wife Erma and alumnus James
Brown and his wife, Eddie. If you happen to be in the area on March 3, I do hope you will attend.
You can find more information about this reception on page 7 of this issue of UAM Magazine.
Homecoming was a tremendous success with the largest attendance in recent memory. A special
“THANK YOU” goes to Jim Trimm and his committee for their work in organizing the reunion
of the Class of ’56, and also to Senator Jimmy Jeffress for organizing a reunion of the A Cappella
Choir that was directed by John Daugherty. Another great big “THANK YOU” goes to Linda
Yeiser and her staff for making Homecoming 2006 such a memorable one. I was particularly proud
of our Sports Hall of Fame inductees. I had the privilege of seeing many of them play; and now, to
hear them talk about what UAM meant to them, and how our faculty and coaches influenced their
lives, was very gratifying for me. And finally, the recognition of Frank Wilson (B.S.F. ’66) as the
Achievement and Merit recipient for 2006 was an especially poignant moment for the university
and for the Wilson family.
As we look ahead, I would encourage you to become part of two very important fund-raising
campaigns – the Centennial Circle, and the Campaign for Athletics. We’ll have more on these two
campaigns in future issues of UAM Magazine as well as on the university website.
As this issue goes to press, our architects are in the final stages of planning and drawing for
renovations to Wells Hall, Sorrells Hall, and the Babin Business Center, as well as construction of a
new athletic facility north of Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium. Weevil Walk and the renovation
of Weevil Pond are also nearing completion. You can still sponsor bricks and benches for Weevil
Walk by contacting our Office of Advancement at (800) 467-8148 or by visiting the alumni website.
And finally, I was pleased to see so many of you at our recent alumni receptions in Hot Springs,
Natchitoches, Louisiana and Houston, Texas. We are planning more receptions in the coming
months to reconnect with YOU, our alumni. If you would like to host or help organize a reception
of UAM alumni in your area, contact my office (870) 460-1020 or the alumni office (800) 467-
8148.
If you’re ever in the Monticello area, please stop by for a visit and see first-hand the exciting
changes taking place on your campus!
Best Wishes,
students at the UAM College of Technology-Crossett,
and an additional 341 students
in classes at both the Monticello campus
and the Colleges of Technology, bringing
the duplicated head count to 3,369.
“This is a historic moment for the
university and a landmark achievement
for our faculty and staff who have worked
so hard in recruitment and retention,”
said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “I
especially want to commend Mary Whiting,
our director of admissions, and her
staff for the long hours and hard work
necessary to recruit students in what is
becoming an increasingly competitive
market.”
UAM has experienced steady growth
over the past four years, with 2,875
students in 2003, 2,942 in 2004 and 2,959
in 2005.
“This is an encouraging trend,” said
Lassiter. “I am confident that we can
build on this success and experience
continued growth in the next decade.”
Student teams from 32 colleges and
“This is a tremendous achievement for
our students and a very positive reflection
on our program,” said Dr. Richard
Education Forum November 8-
9 in the John F. Gibson University Center.
The forum addressed the critical need for
teachers and the economic impact of education
in the southern and eastern regions
of the state.
The forum included a District Recruitment
Model Workshop, an Education
Partners Reception, and an Education
Career Fair.
Christina Villareal of the Office of
Teacher Recruitment and Retention for
the Arkansas Department of Education
led the recruitment workshop. She was
assisted by Shirley Billingsley, assistant
superintendent for the El Dorado School
District. The workshop provided recruiters
from high priority school districts
with resources and instruction to assist
them in recruiting and retaining qualified
teachers for their districts.
The Education Partners Reception
brought together southeast Arkansas
educators and school district administrators
with business, civic and community
leaders to discuss the problems facing
education in the region. “This forum
provided a wonderful opportunity for
educators and business leaders to develop
partnerships and look for ways to meet
the challenges facing public school edu-
cation in this region of the state,” said Dr.
Peggy Doss, dean of the UAM School of
Education. “We’re facing a teacher shortage
in the eastern and southern regions of
Arkansas and we’ve got to find ways to
attract and retain high quality teachers to
these areas.”
The Education Career Fair was
designed to assist the region’s high priority
school districts in the recruitment of
licensed teachers and administrators for
hard-to-fill vacancies in their districts.
Spending the summer working for the
42nd President of the United States was a
dream come true for Will Whiting.
A 2005 summa cum laude graduate of
the University of Arkansas at Monticello,
Whiting was one of 30 interns from an
applicant pool of 600 chosen to work in
former President Bill Clinton’s New York
office from June through August.
After a long and exhausting interview
process, Whiting was notified in April that
he had been selected to work for the former
President. Whiting spent the summer living
in a studio apartment in lower Manhattan
and commuting 45 minutes to Clinton’s
Harlem office in upper Manhattan.
Whiting graduated from UAM
with a double major in speech
communications and journalism
and was the 2005 Pi Kappa
Delta All-American in debate
and forensics. He put his background
to work in the communications
office for the Alliance
for a Healthier Generation, a new
initiative launched by the William
J. Clinton Foundation and
the American Heart Association.
He also provided communications
assistance for other areas
supported by the Clinton Foundation,
including the Clinton
HIV-AIDS Initiative, the newly
created Clinton Climate Initiative,
and the Clinton Global
Initiative.
“The internship was much
more than I expected,” said
Whiting. “I gained valuable
experience that will help me
professionally. I got a chance to
live in and experience one of the
greatest cities in the world, I met
New York
some amazing people and made
some great friends.”
Part of the intern experience
included “brown bag” sessions
with friends of President Clinton,
including former First Lady
and current New York Senator
Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Kennedy
Townsend, Madonna, actor
Edward Norton, Carlotta Walls,
one of the original Little Rock
Nine who integrated Little Rock
Central High School, and Doug
Band, the former president’s
personal aide.
The interns were required to
volunteer time in the Harlem
community in addition to their
actual work. “Harlem was an
experience in and of itself,” said
Whiting. “One of the best things
about New York is that every
neighborhood is completely different
from the next one. Harlem
was no exception. President Clinton’s
willingness to locate his office
in what is historically known
as a rougher section of town was
risky, but the community seems
to appreciate his presence.”
The son of Bill and Mary
Whiting of Monticello, Will is
pursuing a master’s degree at
UA-Little Rock while working
as a graduate assistant in both
the Chancellor’s Office and the
Office of Recruitment and Retention.
He also volunteers one day
a week at the Clinton Foundation.
Whiting returned to New York
as one of four interns chosen
to serve as host for the Clinton
Global Initiative Conference
September 19-23. The conference
attracted world leaders,
heads of state, national political
figures, and other celebrities
from around the globe.
“I’ve always been a big
believer in public service and
giving back,” said Whiting.
“Working for President Clinton
was, and is, a once-in-a-lifetime
experience and it made me realize
even more how important
public service really is.”
Whiting and other
Clinton Foundation interns
“We are pleased to honor two individuals who have meant
so much to this institution and who have forged such successful
lives,” said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Frank Wilson
has been a success in business, a leader in his community, and
a loyal supporter of UAM. Jim Trimm is one of those special
people whose love for this university has made him a part of
our tradition and history. He was an outstanding basketball
player who took that same drive to win and translated it into
success in business.”
Wilson earned a bachelor of science degree in forestry from
what was then Arkansas A&M in 1966. He became a leader in
the south Arkansas timber industry, developing Wilson Brothers
Lumber Company and Tri-W Logging, and is currently a
member of the Executive Committee of the Arkansas Forestry
Association. He is also a member of the UAM Board of Visitors.
Frank Wilson is the oldest of three generations of Wilsons
who have earned degrees from, or are currently attending
UAM. His son, Harrell, and nephews, James and Jeff, earned
forestry degrees from UAM and work with Frank Wilson in the
timber business along with another nephew, Brad, who also attended
UAM. Another son, Jeremy, attended UAM and played
football before earning a degree in history. Frank Wilson’s great
nephew, Tyler, is currently pursuing a forestry degree at UAM.
“UAM has always meant a lot to me and it’s certainly an
honor to be chosen,” said Wilson. “There are probably a lot of
people more deserving than I am, but to be a part of the legacy
of UAM is very special to me.”
Jim Trimm was a starting forward on the Arkansas A&M
basketball team in 1956 when the Boll Weevils won the
school’s only conference championship in men’s basketball.
Known as “Ace” to his classmates, Trimm grew up in the shadow
of the university campus, attended Drew Central schools
next door for 12 years, then went to A&M as an unrecruited
walk-on for the basketball team.
He quickly earned a scholarship and helped lead the Boll
Weevils to one of their most successful four-year periods.
“Those were the happiest days of my life,” said Trimm.
“I’ve looked back on those days so many times. That was a
very special time. The campus was small and you knew everybody.
I was just an old country boy who learned a lot there.
Everything I am today I owe to Arkansas A&M. This is a great
honor.”
Mark Mayo and Amanda Powell
someone might recognize their
television personality spouses.
Mayo and Powell are married to
Mayo and Steve Powell, the hosts of
Good Morning, Arkansas, which airs Monday
through Friday at 9 a.m. on Little Rock television
station KATV.
“Melinda gets recognized all the time,”
says Mark. “It was kind of cool for the first
week. After that, not so much. You feel like
you’re being watched.”
“You get used to it,” adds Amanda.
“Steve is so personable and down
to earth. He makes people feel at ease
and doesn’t pretend to be famous.”
Mark and Amanda share more
than their famous spouses. They are
both graduates of the University of
Arkansas at Monticello who are forging
successful careers in business and
advertising.
Mark graduated from UAM in
1986 with a degree in business administration
and is now the regional
sales manager for Allied Tube in
Little Rock, overseeing an annual
budget of $77 million for a 16-state
region.
Amanda is an advertising sales
representative for KATV who was
responsible for more than $1 million
in ad sales last year.
Both are proud of their UAM
roots.
(Left) Mark Mayo and Amanda Powell (seated) with their
spouses, Melinda Mayo (left) and Steve Powell, the hosts of “Good
Morning, Arkansas.”
A Pine Bluff native, Mark transferred
to UAM from Southern Arkansas
University to play baseball for the
Boll Weevils and became a member
of Phi Lambda Chi fraternity. “I
wasn’t a real serious student, at least
to begin with,” he says. “I lived and
breathed fraternity. But I made a lot
of lifelong friends.”
One of the first people Mayo met
in Phi Lamb was George Shahin, who
unbeknownst to Mayo, was a starting
guard on the UAM football team.
Mayo chose Shahin as his fraternity
Big Brother to see him through his
year as a pledge. “My buddies told
me I picked the wrong guy,” Mayo
says. “I found out why pretty quick.”
In the 1980’s, fraternity hazing
was still a quietly accepted if unpublicized
practice and being hazed by a
250-pound varsity football player was
a not altogether pleasant experience.
Mayo remembers his Phi Lamb
days as a case of “boys will be boys.”
He and some of his fraternity brothers
decided to participate in Drew
County Clean-up Day, with the promise
of $200 for picking up the most
trash from McDonald’s. “We started
out looking for trash along the road
but decided that was too much work,”
Mayo remembers with a laugh. “So
we went to McDonald’s and loaded
up with trash out of their dumpster.”
Mayo had what he describes as
his “watershed moment” while still a
few hours short of graduation. “I got
the bright idea I wanted to quit school
and become a lumber inspector for
Price Lumber,” Mayo remembers.
“Mr. Price wanted to know how
many hours I needed to graduate, and
when I told him, he said ‘Go back
and finish school.’”
Mayo spent the summer pulling
boards in one of Price’s sawmills and
decided finishing college was a better
career option. “I made the Dean’s
List the next semester and did well in
class from that point on,” he says.
Before she was Amanda Powell,
Amanda Loveless was a 1995 graduate
of Drew Central High School
in Monticello. She had scholarship
offers from UAM and the University
of Central Arkansas, but chose UAM
to stay close to her home.
Amanda was Mayo’s opposite in
college, all business with little time
for outside activities. She worked full
time in the inspection department at
Burlington Industries but still managed
to graduate in four years with
a degree in business administration
and a minor in marketing. “I was all
about working,” she says.
After graduation, she got a job
with Applied Independent Technologies.
Two years later, she answered
a newspaper ad and was hired by
KATV to work in advertising sales.
She met her future
husband at KATV in
2002 and the couple
was married in October
2003. The Powells have
a 14-month-old son
named Charlie.
Amanda credits
retired UAM business
professor James Cathey
for being the biggest influence
on her academic
success. “Mr. Cathey got
on our level,” she says.
“He was always very
helpful and friendly.
I feel very fortunate
to have had a lot of
wonderful teachers at
UAM. The faculty was
very involved with their
students.”
Mark and Melinda
Mayo graduated from
Pine Bluff High School two years
apart but never met until a friend
introduced them on a blind date in
1993. Mark got up at five o’clock
in the morning to watch Melinda on
television to check out his date. “I
thought, yeah, she’s cute,” he says.
“I’ll go out with her.”
For Mark it was love at first site
and the couple married in 1995.
For both Mark Mayo and Amanda
Powell, UAM offered them a chance
to get a college degree without moving
far from their homes or getting
lost in the shuffle of a large university.
“I went to UAM because it was
close to home and small,” says Mark.
“Everybody knew everybody and I
didn’t want to go someplace and get
lost in a crowd.”
With famous spouses, the chances
of Mark and Amanda getting lost in a
crowd now probably isn’t an option.
Hornadays Present 7th
Endowment to Foundation
D
an and Charlotte Hornaday of Little Rock recently
presented their seventh endowed scholarship to the
University of Arkansas at Monticello Foundation Fund.
The retired Exxon executives established an endowed
scholarship for students in UAM’s Division of Computer Information
Systems. The gift, which includes a match from
the ExxonMobil Foundation, totals $30,000.
“Dan and Charlotte Hornaday are very special people
who have chosen to create a lasting legacy at this institution,”
said UAM Chancellor Jack Lassiter. “Their generosity
and continuing support of UAM are extremely gratifying.”
The Hornadays established their first endowed scholarship
in 992. They have created endowed scholarships in
debate, agriculture, music, and residence life as well as
a general scholarship and a scholarship in honor of Mrs.
Hornaday’s parents, the late Van and Eula Mae Cruce.
Dan Hornaday graduated from UAM (then Arkansas
A&M College) in 95 . Charlotte Hornaday received her
degree in 952.
“The Hornadays both came from humble beginnings,
they both worked hard to build successful careers and
lives, but they’ve never forgotten where they came from,”
said Lassiter. “Their legacy of creating educational opportunities
will extend far beyond our lifetimes.”
Surprise Gift Honors Long-Time Educator Barry Hall
T
here isn’t much that can surprise Barry Hall after
more than three decades as a public school teacher
and administrator in southeast Arkansas.
But Hall admits to being totally shocked when
University of Arkansas at Monticello Chancellor Jack
Lassiter stood up before a group of state and regional
educators recently to announce the creation of the Barry
Hall Endowed Scholarship.
Hall’s wife, Annette, as well as Hall’s parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Cleatous J. Hall of Monticello, and his aunt,
Audrey Blasingame of Searcy, presented the $20,000
endowment to the UAM Foundation Fund. Lassiter made
the announcement at the Southeast Arkansas Education
Forum hosted by the UAM School of Education and the
Arkansas Department of Education.
“This is a fitting honor to someone who has dedicated
his life to education,” said Lassiter. “Barry Hall has
created a lasting legacy by touching the lives of so many
young people. Now that legacy will continue with this
endowment, which will provide scholarships to deserving
young people for generations to come.”
The endowment will be used to fund the Barry Hall
Endowed Scholarship, to be presented annually to a
graduate of Monticello High School majoring in teacher
education. Scholarship recipients must have a grade
point average of 3.0 or above and the scholarship will be
awarded based on merit and need.
Hall spent 32 years in public school education after
graduating from UAM (then Arkansas A&M College).
He began his career in Crossett as a science teacher at
Norman Junior High School. He spent one year as the
physical education instructor for all four of Crossett’s
elementary schools before moving to Monticello to
become principal of Drew Central Elementary while also
serving as a driver’s education and civics teacher at the
high school.
Hall served as Drew Central High principal from 968
to 972 before moving across town to Monticello High
School, where he held the principal’s post for 25 years. He
served as assistant superintendent for transportation and
athletics for the Monticello School System from 997 until
his retirement in 2003.
His wife, Annette Hall, has been a member of the UAM
music faculty since 972 and chair of the department since
983.
“A lot of things have happened to me in my career
that were momentarily rewarding,” said Hall, “but
the most rewarding things have come after my career
was over, when students I’ve known come back and
express their gratitude for helping them. I get the most
satisfaction from seeing former students succeed.
“I think that’s why this scholarship is so gratifying and
humbling,” he continued. “Looking back, if I hadn’t had a
scholarship, I couldn’t have gone to college. So this means
a lot to me.”
A&M Memories
“Doorknob” Remembers Life at A&M in the late ‘30’s
(The following article was written by James R. Clark of Grapevine, Texas.
Clark is a 1940 graduate of Arkansas A&M College and earned an M.S. from
the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He is 89 years old, a World War II
veteran, and married to Julia Holland of Glendale for 65 years. Clark retired as
superintendent of schools in Ranger, Texas after 36 years in the teaching.)
When I went to Monticello A&M, there was no one who needed
college like I did. My life turned around at A&M. When I was a
junior at Fordyce High School, I was 4- , weighed 95 pounds and
was tongue-tied. Because I was a runt, I didn’t play football. Our
football team had Paul “Bear” Bryant, Jim Benton, and other large
men. I never had a date in high school or went to a party. I think they
invited me just to be nice. I was laughed at so much that I buried
myself in reading books. I could read six to eight books a day. I read
more books in the county library than anyone in Dallas County but I
was too bashful to let them put a picture of me in the county paper.
I graduated from Fordyce in 935 but I laid out of school a year to
grow. It was during the Depression when I went to A&M in the summer
of 936 with 0 dollars in my pocket and two pair of long pants.
Most of my earlier clothes were knickers like golfers wore. Tuition
was $465 a year and most of us needed jobs to pay our way through
school.
For the next four years I had many jobs as I worked my way
through A&M. My first job was killing peach borers in the campus
trees. Then I painted rooms in Harris Hall. Later they made me assistant
trainer in football. I took up student laundry for Ford Laundry
in Warren, hand-lettered leather jackets with a boll weevil under the
words Arkansas A&M, worked in the campus bookstore making sodas
and buying and selling books, and graded papers for Coach Stewart
Ferguson. Also, I repaired ladies shoes, which I learned how to do
working in the Clark’s Shoe Shop in Fordyce. At one time I was janitor
and morning wood stove lighter for Miss Ellen Knight at the training
school. She had taught me in the first grade in Fordyce.
I also wrote for the Weevil Outlet, the campus newspaper. I wrote
a regular column of general news and an unnamed gossip column,
and sent articles to the Arkansas Democrat.
I typed term papers for 0 cents a page and then learned that I
could make more money actually ghost writing term papers. I read
the daily lesson to Dr. Horace Adams, chairman of Social Science,
who had very poor vision. I also checked every reference on student’s
themes. Then I helped Dr. Adams write an article that was published
in the Southwest Historical Journal.
When I went to Monticello, who would think I would make
campus fame by painting a commode seat? But the commode seat
was in the home of President Marvin Bankston. Work superintendent
Weldon Abbott told me to paint the Bankston’s bathroom while they
were out of town. To me that meant every thing, so I painted the
woodwork and commode seat. The Bankstons returned home sooner
than expected and Mrs. Bankston went straight to the bathroom.
You can guess what happened. President Bankston liked to tell the
story about what “Doorknob,” my nickname, had done and that
story lasted all my first year as an Aggie in 936.
How does the University for Arkansas at Monticello today
compare with Arkansas A&M in 936 to 940? There is absolutely no
comparison. Today UAM is a large institution with a large administrative
staff and a huge staff of instructors.
Back then we had three administrators. President Marvin
Bankston was all over the campus daily, talking to students or visitors.
C. C. Smith was the business manager. I would go to him to get
a meal ticket on credit. Ira Hutchinson was dean and registrar. My sister,
Margaret, was secretary for Dr. Bankston but during the war she
served as registrar for Dean Hutchinson, who went into the service
with the Second Battalion 206th Coast Artillery. This was an adequate
staff for about 350 students.
Freshman initiation was expected. Seniors told all freshmen to
line up on the sidewalk between Harris Hall and Horsfall Hall. They
ran us down the belt line twice and then proceeded to cut our hair
near the scalp. Someone noticed that my hair was longer than the
others, so they shaved my head. Someone remarked that my head
looked like a doorknob and from then on “Doorknob” was all the
student body called me. My parents drove over from Fordyce on
Sunday and asked for James Clark. No one knew that name. Finally
my parents asked for “Doorknob” and a student told them that I had
the corner room in Sorrells Hall.
It was customary for the freshmen to throw the seniors in the
campus lake. My senior year I told all seniors to spread the word
to meet on the roof of the Fine Arts tower at 0 p.m. They were to
bring food and drinks but no cigarettes. About 0 to midnight all
freshmen got master keys and went from room to room in all the
dorms looking for us. We watched the lights go on and off in each
room as they searched for us. They even went to the farm and downtown
looking for us. Then they discovered where we were hiding because
one senior lit a cigarette. When the freshmen spotted the light
from the cigarette, they tried to get up to the top of the tower but
we simply stood on the trapdoor. When classes started that morning
they left a guard to watch us. I had the bright idea that we go down
and throw the guard in the lake. Word spread that we were down
from the tower and the campus bell started tolling and all classes
headed for the lake. We headed back to the tower but they captured
“Fellow” Brown. So we went back to rescue Brown but soon realized
it was hopeless. Then all the seniors and freshmen decided to join
arms and walked into the lake together.
When I graduated from A&M in 940, no newspaper would hire
me because I had no courses in journalism and no experience as a
full-time employee of a printed paper. Then I was interviewed by C.
E. Palmer who owned a chain of newspapers in three states. He was
very impressed with my samples of work and hired me on the spot at
$85 a month. At the last minute I changed my mind and took a job
that paid $60 for eight months as a teacher in the Glendale ISD. That
was where I met my wife and was the beginning of a long career in
the teaching profession.
I owe my success as a school administrator to Arkansas A&M. They
turned a bashful boy with no future into a self-confident leader. My
life completely turned around at Monticello A&M.
