#3 Warhawks Top #20 Blugolds
UW-Whitewater, ranked third in the D3hoops.com poll, defeated UW-Eau Claire, ranked
twentieth, 60-50 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.
The victory avenged Whitewater's only loss of the season, a 63-60 game in Eau Claire January
12. With the win UW-W, 19-1 overall, moves in to a tie with UW-Eau Claire, 16-4 overall, with
identical 10-1 marks in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Whitewater, the top
scoring team in the WIAC and ranked third in Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic
Associaton, was held to a season low offensive output, equaling the 60 the Warhawks scored in
the first meeting.
Eau Claire led most of the first half, twice by seven point margins. UW-W tied the game at 20-20
at the 3:05 mark, and went on out-score UW-EC 10-2 to go in to the locker room with a 30-22
lead.
The Blugolds cut the margin back to 32-29 on a three-pointer from Heidi Aarcixzweski at 16:01,
but that would prove to be as close as UW-EC would get. The Blugolds were still within seven
with 5:49 left, but UW-W kept the margin in double digits the rest of the way, other than a threepoint
play from Arciszewski at 3:03 when it was eight, 55-47.
UW-W senior center Lindsey Buechner had 12 points and sophomore forward Nicole Bundy 11 to
lead the team in scoring. Sophomore center Dana Thompson added a game-high 10 rebounds,
and Bundy led both teams with four assists. Buechner moved in to fourth place in career scoring,
moving past Bev Podewils (1,066, 1984-87) with her total of 1,076. Eau Claire junior guard Heidi
Arciszewski led all scorer with 17 points, including 6-6 from the free throw line. Backcourt mate
Missy Fremstad added 10, and senior forward Michelle Burns 12 for UW-EC.
The defensive struggle was epitomized by the shooting percentages, with Whitewater making
36% of its shots and Eau Claire 33%. Given the defensive pressure, the teams combined for just
25 turnovers (13 EC, 12 WW), but the game may have been won on the boards, where UW-W
had a 47-31 advantage.
UW-W upped its win streak to five, and broke Eau Claire's streak of seven consecutive wins.
Whitewater travels to UW-Stout Saturday, February 9. The next home game for the Warhawks
will be Wednesday, February 13 with UW-Platteville visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center
#3 Warhawks Up Mark to 20-1 with Win at Stout
UW-Whitewater, ranked third in the D3hoops.com poll, upped its mark to 20-1 with an 83-72 win
at UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin Saturday afternoon. The Warhawks, 11-1 in the WIAC,
also remained tied for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
UW-Whitewater used an unusual formula to lead 35-29 at the half. A team that relies on depth to
wear teams down, UW-W did not get any points off the bench in the first half. Junior center
Tiffany Morton had a double-double at the intermission, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Whitewater scored 14 first half points off Stout turnovers.
The Blue Devils were still within six points, 46-40, at 15:22 of the second half. The Warhawks
then outscored UW-S 16-5, making it 62-45 with 9:13 left. Whitewater led by as many as 18, 73-
55, with 4:34 left and Stout never got the margin back to single digits. With Stout concerned
about stopping Morton inside, junior forward Meghan Schmidt scored all ten of her points in the
second half.
