Leading 38-27 with 18:11 left in the game, Whitewater used an 8-0 run, including a pair of
jumpers from Kelsey Hendrickson, to build a 46-27 advantage with 14:14 left. That margin
increased to as much as twenty-one, 50-29 with 11:23 left in the game, and again at 60-39 with
just 5:45 left.
The Eagles chomped at the lead, outscoring the Warhawks 28-7 to tie the game at 67-67 on a
three-pointer by Laitie Clarkin with 23 seconds remaining. After a UW-W timeout, Whitewater's
Heidi Sonntag was fouled by Eagle point guard Amanda Bates, her fifth foul, with fourteen
seconds left. Sonntag missed her first free throw and then made the second to put UW-W up 68-
67. Mary Washington ran a play and missed, with Trisha Thill grabbing the rebound for the
Warhawks. Thill was fouled and went to the line with one second left, and made both free throws
for the final margin.
Hendrickson led UW-W with 15 points, with sophomore center Dana Thompson and senior center
Lindsey Buechner scoring 11 apiece. Thompson led the Warhawks with nine rebounds. Along
with sophomore centerTiffany Morton, Whitewater's post trio combined for 30 points and 19
rebounds.
Whitewater overcame 26 turnovers in the contest, with the help of a ten rebound advantage. The
Warhawks also made the most of their trips to the free throw line, hitting 25-39, while MWU was
16-22 from the stripe.
Mary Washington fought back from the big deficit despite having three players foul out. All-
American center Liz Hickey, forward Leigh Kampman and Bates were starters for the Eagles in
their tournament run last year. Forward Lisa Tracy led MWU with 16 points, one of five Eagles in
double figures. Clarkin added 14, and Hickey had 11 points and a game-high six blocked shots.
UW-Whitewater will get back to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at
UW-River Falls. The next home game for the Warhawks will be Wednesday, January 9 at 7:00,
Sonntag Grounds Falcons, #2 UW-W now 13-0
Sophomore guard Heidi Sonntag scored 27 points to lead UW-Whitewater to an 86-54 win over
UW-River Falls at the Karges Center in River Falls, Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.
Sonntag's output is also a team season high for a Warhawk. She made five of six three point
attempts and ten of eleven free throws. The five threes is tied for fifth in the Warhawk record
book, and her .833 accuracy from beyond the arc is also fifth best in UW-W history. Sonntag
scored 16 of her points in the first half when she hit all three of her long range attempts.
The Warhawks totaled eleven 3-point field goals in the game, equaling the school record that had
been accomplished three times previously, most recently January 9, 1999 against UW-River
Falls. UW-Whitewater shot better from three point range, 11-22 for .500, than it did from the floor
overall, 24-55 for .436.
The Warhawks led 14-12 with 14:26 left in the first half, then held the Falcons scoreless for the
next 6:12, in the process bumping the lead to 29-12. UW-W's defense held UW-RF scoreless for
three minutes or more four times in the game.
Also scoring in double figures for UW-W were junior guard Rachel Woolever and sophomore
forward Nicole Bundy, both with 12 points.
UW-RF was led by senior guard Jana Benitz, who scored 18 points and dished out a game high
five assists. Benitz, however, turned the ball over ten times. The Falcons totaled 32 turnovers,
the fourth time this year a UW-W opponent has commited 30+ turnovers.
