Popular venues for civil wedding and civil partnership ceremonies are Castell 

Coch, near Cardiff, Caerphilly Castle in south Wales, Tretower Court and 

Castle near Abergavenny and Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town House in Conwy. 

The Marquess of Bute’s Gothic creation 

at Castell Coch, with its colourful 

interior and beautiful woodland 

setting, is an ideal location for intimate 

ceremonies. It does not have facilities 

for receptions or other functions. 

Larger ceremonies and other events 

can be held at Caerphilly Castle, with 

its magnificent moat and impressive 

fourteenth-century Great Hall. This 

has been fully equipped with modern 

catering facilities. 

The interior of Plas Mawr Elizabethan 

Town House reflects the wealth and 

opulence of the Tudor gentry in Wales. 

The plaster ceilings are elaborately 

decorated and the house, courtyards 

and garden have been painstakingly 

restored, providing a breathtaking 

backdrop for photography. 

Tretower Court and Castle provides 

an exceptionally romantic setting 

for your civil wedding, blessing 

or partnership. 

The restored courtyard house dates 

back to the fifteenth century, and the 

recreated medieval garden provides 

a beautiful tranquil setting for your 

special day. 

The use of a marquee will not 

generally be allowed at any site, 

except in exceptional circumstances.

Caerphilly Castle 

The grand atmosphere of the Great Hall creates a splendid 

venue for a very special occasion. The Great Hall annexe 

is fitted with modern kitchen facilities and a bar area. 

The sophisticated ambient lighting system casts a soft 

glow over the hall, highlighting the ornate tracery of 

the windows and medieval stonework. 

Caerphilly Castle, with its magnificent 

moat and impressive fourteenthcentury 

Great Hall, is a perfect venue 

for a romantic civil wedding or civil 

partnership ceremony. 

The Great Hall at Caerphilly Castle is 

available for both the civil ceremony 

and the reception and/or evening 

event, but not solely for the ceremony. 

The function can take place either 

during the afternoon or in the 

afternoon and evening, but the 

ceremony can take place only between 

12 noon and 6pm. The Great Hall 

may also be booked for evening 

functions, such as parties, dinners 

and dances, and company events. 

Bookings for the Hall are dealt with 

by Cadw’s Visitor and Business Services 

Unit — 01443 336106. Cadw will 

accept bookings for Caerphilly Great 

Hall up to 13 months in advance 

of the date. For example, bookings 

for March 2013 will be taken from 

February 2012. 

Applicants for ceremonies are 

encouraged to make sure that a 

registrar is available to conduct 

their ceremony before making 

their provisional booking. 

For a formal seated fuction, a 

maximum of 150 is recommended.

Castell Coch 

If you are searching for a more intimate, romantic 

venue for your special day, Castell Coch could be 

perfect for your requirements. Approached by a 

driveway through beautiful beech woodland, the 

venue is ideal for smaller ceremonies. 

The Marquess of Bute’s Victorian 

creation, with its richly decorated 

interiors and lavishly furnished rooms, 

provides a breathtaking backdrop 

for photography. 

Ceremonies take place in the vaulted 

Drawing Room under the gaze of 

the statues of the Three Fates and 

surrounded by characters from 

Aesop’s Fables, which adorn the walls. 

The Drawing Room is available for 

civil wedding and civil partnership 

ceremonies only and holds a maximum 

of 30 people at any time. There are no 

facilities for a reception or a function. 

The maximum number must include 

the two registrars, the bride and 

groom, the photographer and any 

musicians present. This is a health and 

safety requirement, and cannot be 

varied. A maximum of 90 minutes is 

allowed for each ceremony. 

This is made up of 30 minutes for the 

preparation of the room, 30 minutes 

for the ceremony, and 30 minutes for 

wedding photography in the courtyard 

and grounds of the castle. Bookings 

are dealt with by the staff at the castle 

(telephone 029 2081 0101), and will be 

accepted up to 13 months in advance

Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town House 

Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town House was built between 

1576 and 1585 at the heart of medieval Conwy’s 

narrow cobbled streets. It is probably the best 

preserved Elizabethan town house in Great Britain. 

The interior, with its elaborately

Tretower Court and Castle 

Tretower Court provides an exceptionally romantic 

setting for your civil wedding/partnership or blessing 

in a restored courtyard house that was begun by 

Sir Roger Vaughan in the fifteenth century. 

Magnificent timberwork survives in 

the northen and western ranges, with 

later Classical-style windows dating 

to the 1630s. There is also a recreated 

fifteenth-century garden that provides 

a beautiful and tranquil setting for 

photographic memories of your 

special day. 

The courtyard house overlooks a 

motte-and-bailey castle established 

during the Norman conquest of 

Brycheiniog, a shell keep raised 

on the mound around 1150, and 

a round tower added in the early 

thirteenth century. 

There are three areas within the 

Court that are available for your 

ceremony; each can accommodate 

up to 50 people. 

One of the rooms is located on the 

ground level via the cobbled courtyard, 

providing ease of accessibility to the 

newly refurbished Great Hall, and two 

others are located on the first floor, 

boasting the fabulous timberwork of 

the house.

Each monument is unique and offers a special setting 

for wedding blessings or wedding photography. All of 

Cadw’s monuments can be seen on our website — 

www.cadw.wales.gov.uk 

You may wish to choose the tranquil 

Cistercian abbey at Tintern in the 

scenic Wye Valley. The grand ruins 

of St Davids Bishop’s Palace, with 

its colourful stonework and grand, 

sweeping staircase, are a popular 

choice in Pembrokeshire. In north 

Wales, there is the impressive castle 

at Harlech or the peaceful ruins 

of Valle Crucis Abbey, both of 

which will provide memorable 

and spectacular backdrops. 

The majority of monuments in the 

care of Cadw are available for private 

hire for a variety of functions and 

events, including wedding blessings 

(following a civil ceremony at a 

different location). 

Most of these functions take place in 

the open air; the only exception to this 

is the Gatehouse Gallery at Plas Mawr 

Elizabethan Town House, Conwy. 

Bookings for blessings at sites licensed 

for civil ceremonies are charged at 

the same hire fee as a civil ceremony.
