Biochemistry along with photographic tricks of “Soft Focus”
are traditionally used in cosmetics as methods to soften the
signs of wrinkle appearance.
So far most anti-wrinkle products give weak results, and most
biochemical compounds simply don’t satisfy the consumers,
as they very often change to use a different product
without committing to any of them long term. Consumers
are looking for immediate signs of skin improvement, as
well as permanent amelioration in skin structure with
disappearance of age lines.
To obtain good visible results, many women and men
have decided to use more efficient methods than topical
applications, leading to a dramatic increase of the number of
face surgeries. However, they are not without risks, and need
to be renewed frequently to maintain the young look.
The trend today is to postpone surgeries as much as possible
and use softer efficient methods to reduce wrinkles. Today
FDA has approved BOTOX® Cosmetics as an aesthetic
treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of
glabellar lines by targeting the muscles that cause them with
local injections.
BOTOX® Cosmetics is not without risks either. BOTOX®
(Botulinum toxin) is a toxin and can be potent in high
concentration. Only small, diluted amounts of BOTOX®
are used in treatments to reduce facial wrinkles. The most
common side effects are headache and temporary redness
or bruising of the skin. There is a chance that non-targeted
muscles could be affected and weakened. This could cause
drooping of the eyelid if BOTOX® seeps below the eyebrow
and into the muscle that controls eyelid function. The effect
is not permanent, but can be found most disturbing, as it
only goes away as BOTOX® wears off, in about 5-6 months.
We were inspired to create even an easier solutions than
BOTOX® Cosmetics with high efficiency and user friendly
usage. Fiflow® BTX is a raw material, which in cosmetic
formulations acts in multiple levels imparting BOTOX®-like
effects without surgeries, injections or unwanted side effects.
Fiflow® BTX
Fiflow® BTX
Fiflow® BTX is based on a blend of medical grade
perfluorocarbons (PFC), which are not drugs, as they only act
as gas carriers. The performance of Fiflow® BTX is based on
four mechanisms permitting strong and fast visible results,
and more importantly, long term improvement of age lines.
First mechanism: very fast penetration of the dermis and
long half-life with different molecular weights. An old trick
in cosmetic formulations is to use esters or oils, which
penetrate quickly and instantaneously reduce the wrinkles.
As they have small molecular weights, they increase the lipid
content of the skin, increasing the volume of the dermis. This
effect does not last long, as esters penetrate quickly to the
deeper skin levels, retransforming the dermis volume back
to normal. Fiflow® BTX is developed based on a combination
of PFCs with variable molecular weighths and half-lives, to
maximise the acting time in the dermis. Low molecular weight
PFCs penetrate quickly allowing immediate visible results.
High molecular weight PFCs penetrate slower maintaining
the initial results and further treating the dermis. The halflive
of a Fiflow® BTX is eleven days, which is the time how
long the results can last after stopping the application.
Second mechanism: instant skin volume increase based on
volume structure of PFCs and their omniphobic properties.
PFCs are not watersoluble nor oil soluble materials, hence
called omniphobic. The inclusion of them in the intercellular
cement, which is constituted from water, phospholipids and
lipids as lamellar flat 2D liquid crystals, creates volume by 3D
hexagonal micelle structure. This phenomena is comparable
to ice versus water; ice is structured, volumised water. Based
on skin surface studies, Fiflow® BTX increases the volume of
dermis by 10 –15%, reducing the appearance of fine lines.
Third mechanism: BOTOX®-type strong muscular relaxation.
Deep wrinkles in the facial area are due to muscular effect,
as the muscles get tense and shorten due to small electrical
impulses. This can be reduced with insulating the muscles
from electrical forces by dielectrics. Fiflow® BTX is a
dielectric, and when used as a topical application, it will allow
the glabellar muscles to relax and let them to find the natural
position. This will immediately improve the skin appearance
and reduce the wrinkles, which can be easily demonstrated
by half-face tests.
Number and depth of wrinkles decreases dramatically after 28-day Fiflow® BTX treatment.

Fourth mechanism: cell cleaning from Carbon Dioxide
refreshing the cellular metabolism. Skin’s uptake of Oxygen
starts to decline at age of 20 and is reduced by 50 % by
age of 50.
Oxygen is compulsory to the skin. Urban pollutions have
lowered the overall level of oxygen in the environment
to ca. 21%. This level is about half of what the air use to
contain. Further, the skin is the last organ where inhaled
oxygen travels, because oxygen depletion of the skin is not
as detrimental as to other organs. Oxygen depletion and
Carbon Dioxide accumulation lead to poor cell respiration
which causes dehydration, uneven skin tone and dull skin. It
is probably the largest contributor to the pre-mature aging
of the skin, as Carbon Dioxide hinders or stops bio-pathways
for cell metabolism.
PFCs are the best gas carriers known to science. Fiflow® BTX
can solubilise Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, mimicking the
function of hemoglobin. Fiflow® BTX carries Oxygen into the
dermis, where it will diffuse from a region of higher partial
O2 pressure to a region of lower partial O2 pressure. As
Carbon Dioxide is more soluble in Fiflow® BTX than Oxygen,
it will immediately replace Oxygen in Fiflow® BTX and will
be carried out by it. This will allow cells to breathe normally
and refresh their biological functions, leading to much better
skin appearance. In medical world, pre-matured babies are
saved thanks to PFCs, as in liquid breathing Oxygen is carried
by PFCs to their brains and permanent damages are avoided.
Efficacy Testing
The Oxygen carrying capacity is directly comparable to
the concentration of PFC used. The more PFCs are used in
the cosmetic formula, the more Oxygen can be found in
the skin. The Oxygen content of the skin can be measured
transcutaneously by the means of polarizable probe by an
Oxymonitor, results presented in the graph.
Images of skin topography analyses before and after Fiflow® BTX
treatment. Skin volumising effect 10-15% after 7 days treatment.
A 14 day panel test was made with 30 women, aged 35-40
years with visible wrinkles around eyes. An emulsion with
10% Fiflow® BTX was applied twice a day for one week. After
seven days the treatment was finished and the moisture
of the skin was measured, as well as the skin profile was
analysed. The moisture content was increased gradually
during the period, reaching 52% increase. The moisture
content remains at high level for eleven days, which is the
half-life of Fiflow® BTX.
The skin topography analyses were made to analyse the
efficiency of Fiflow® BTX. The evolution of the skin surface
during anti-aging treatment is determined by comparition
relief parameters obtained by the shadow casting method.
The number of wrinkles, depth of the wrinkles and the length
of the wrinkles were analysed and as a results a 10-50%
increase in volume was found after seven days topical
treatment of 10% Fiflow® BTX.
Technical properties
Fiflow® BTX is transparent, highly volatile liquid, which
carriers gases, penetrates quickly in the skin, forms an
incredible soft film, which can be sensed hours after
application. The density of Fiflow® BTX is very high and if it
is used in very low viscosity bases, it can sink to the bottom.
A quick shake will instantly re-emulsify it and disperse it
homogeniously in the product, as bi-phase products do.
Fiflow® BTX and Gases
PFCs always carry gases, which in normal conditions is air.
They can specifically be enriched with some gases, like Oxygen
and Nitrogen. We offer Fiflow® BTX also loaded with Oxygen
and we can measure the exact value of solubilised Oxygen
with the Oxygen meter. Oxygen loading is necessary to obtain
most efficient results, but as air contains 21% Oxygen, Fiflow®
BTX naturally acts as an Oxygen carrier. Nitrogen loading
can be a solution for products, which are Oxygen sensitive to
create an inert atmosphere. Then, of course, the air in Fiflow®
BTX has to be replaced completely by Nitrogen.
Gas loaded Fiflow® BTX requires a special, hermetic packaging
with a pump. If this type of packaging is not used, the
Oxygen level will go down slowly but surely, and Oxygen will
be replaced by air. Also this phenomena has to be considered
in the production. Oxygen loaded Fiflow® BTX has to be
added in the emulsion in the end when cooled down, like
fragrances. The vessel should be covered immediately to avoid
unnecessary Oxygen loss and packed as soon as possible.
Fiflow® BTX forms instantly a third phase in any emulsion,
as it is a completely insoluble material. It is very inert and
compatible with all cosmetic raw materials. Fiflow® BTX is
safe and does not cause any sensitation or allergic reactions.
Fiflow® BTX can be used in emulsions, gels and even in
transparent emulsions, in skin care and colour care. As
technical service we offer formulations for anti-age and antiwrinkle
products for serums, neck products, masks, water
free emulsions, etc. An interesting new consumer group is
men, who look for solutions for younger looks in comfortable
