GLORY MARTIN, EDITOR
New England Poem
It's winter in New England
And the gentle breezes blow
Fifty miles an hour
At more than five below.
Oh, how I love New England
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.
Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around,
I could never leave New England
'Cause I'm frozen to the ground.
President’s President’s Message
Message
Cheri Cheri Shares…..
Shares…..
Happy March everyone! I am sitting at my kitchen table typing this greeting and the snow bank
outside my kitchen window is still 6 feet tall. However, by the time of the next newsletter, the
ice and snow will have disappeared and the lawn will need its first shearing. I love spring in Vermont
because it feels like rebirth to me every year. I actually look forward to mud season because
it reaffirms that the snow and ice shall pass and my daffodils are waiting to burst forth
from their wintry slumber.
I have to share a message that I spotted while driving through
Woodstock a couple of weeks ago. The sign was at an Agway
store and it read, “Swim against the tide…..only a dead fish goes
with the flow.” Wow…that hit me right between the eyes! I
interpret this catchy phrase to mean that we need to be willing
to stand up and embrace change; be willing to take a chance…
swim against the tide. If we don’t, we will float away and be
swallowed up by apathy and indifference. It is very easy to go
with the flow and stay in our comfort zones. We, in addition to
our students and their families, are in an ever-changing pattern
of new ideas and concepts. We have to be willing to swim
against the tide and stand up for what is right, not just what is popular. Networking with other
educational office professionals gives us that opportunity to find solutions and engage in productive
discussions.
As spring approaches, my excitement increases and this is especially true because the Board has
great plans for the 2008 VAEOP Spring Conference. The conference theme is “Talk the Talk ~
Improve your Communication Skills.” We will be at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center
on Friday, April 18. We are fortunate to have two outstanding presenters. Dianne Gross
Percy is a performance development expert with the Technology Education Division and will be
presenting the morning session on Interpersonal Communication Skills. Jay Paterson is the Director
of the Technology Extension Division and brings his expertise to realizing business goals
through specific training programs and will be the afternoon presenter. Please check out the
registration and information inside. Please note that hotel reservations for Thursday evening, April
17, must be made by Tuesday, March 25. There will be a dinner on Thursday evening starting at
6:30 pm in G’s Restaurant at the Sheraton. Please let me know if you will be attending the dinner
so we can be sure that we can all sit together. Also, at 8:30 pm there will be an informal
get-together. Please check at the main desk of the hotel where additional information will be
available. This will be an opportunity to kick back and have some conversation in an informal
atmosphere. We are hoping for a great turnout for the conference so please spread the word.
Please contact me or any one of the Board members if you have questions.
Another professional development opportunity will take place on Thursday, March 27 at South Burlington High School. This
will be a mini-workshop entitled, “Let’s Pull Together!” and will take place from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. Please plan on attending this
FREE workshop. These mini-workshops are being offered regionally and this one is being hosted by Region I. Region I Chairperson
Dianne Marcotte, Glory Martin, and Sally Bushey are planning this event and are looking forward to your attendance as am I.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Region II will be hosting one of these mini-workshops in May. Please watch for upcoming information about this wonderful opportunity.
Region II Chairperson Robin Hunt is working on the details.
Just as a reminder of the “Make a Difference” Award. I am still looking for outstanding VAEOP members who might be recognized
for his/her kindheartedness. This is an ongoing recognition process so please do not hesitate to contact me if you have someone
that you know has helped another who was in need without expecting anything in return.
Be sure and mark your calendar the VAEOP 2008 Annual Conference on Friday, October 24, 2008 at Green Mountain Union
High School in Chester, VT. The Host Committee is working diligently to bring us a wonderful and exciting conference. Stay
tuned for more details!
Please enjoy the longer days of sunlight and the promise of things to come. It has been a difficult winter with multiple ice, sleet,
and freezing rain thrown into the mix of weather. I hope you take advantage of VAEOP’s upcoming opportunities to increase your
professional development portfolio. As educational office professionals, we are huge contributors to the network that educates
students. I know sometimes that acknowledgement of the vital services that we perform can be overlooked but know that you are
appreciated by those of us that share this unique work relationship with you. You are a powerful influence on those around you
and as an educational office professional, each and every day, your dedication and enthusiasm are a shining example to those
around you.
Board
Secretary Glory Martin:
PAGE 3
Each newsletter will highlight three different board members. Here is a little introductory information to let you know us better.
My name is Glory Martin. I am the Principals’ Secretary at Vergennes Union High
School. I have been at VUHS for 17 years. I started out as a receptionist and later
moved up to Principal’s Secretary. I live in Weybridge. I am a mother to a fabulous ten-
year old daughter named Anissa. My hobbies include bowling, reading, cross stitching,
and traveling. I have been a VAEOP member since 1995, where I got involved with my
first National Association Institute in Burlington, VT. I became part of the board in 2003
as Region I Chair. And I am currently on my second term as Secretary for the board. I
enjoy the opportunities to network with other members and attend workshops to help me grow in my job. I
have attended two NAEOP conferences (Boston and Dallas). I would encourage everyone to become a
VAEOP member and to at least make it to one NAEOP conference in their career time. It is VERY exciting
and worthwhile!
Treasurer Karen Aubrey:
My first experience working in a school system was in 1970 as the secretary to the Director of the
Massachusetts Department of Mental Health School of Practical Nursing. That was a little different
as the students were older than the K-12 students we are used to working with now. I continued
there for four years until the school closed. We moved to Vermont in May of 1979 and I started
working at Caledonia North Supervisory Union in July 1982 as secretary to the Superintendent
and Director of Special Education. I am currently in my twenty sixth year at CNSU. When our
bookkeeper retired, I became Fiscal Manager, processing payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable
and administering benefits. I am currently doing Human Resource benefits as well as Student Services. I live in
Sheffield and in June ’08 will have been married for 34 years. I have one daughter and two grandsons (12 and 10 years
old) who we have the privilege of seeing everyday. They have their own home on our property and Grandpa watches
over the boys. Needless to say the boys are at our house as much as they are their own. I have had a wonderful experience
working with a lot of wonderful people throughout my years in education. I feel very privileged to be a member
of the VAEOP Board and look forward to serving the members of such a wonderful organization. Every day is a
gift. Cherish it.
Region II Chair Robin Hunt:
I am Robin Hunt, your VAEOP Board II Chair for the second time around! I am the Human
Resource Specialist at Caledonia Central Supervisory Union in Danville as well as the
Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. I truly enjoy the work I do for the Board
and would encourage members to become involved and perhaps try a position on the
Board. Planning for conferences, meeting with the board and being on a variety of committee’s
is so much fun, but more importantly something you can be proud of. Please feel
free to call me at any time if you’d like to chat!
