For the first time in Friends of the Smokies history, our 2008 Annual Report exists solely in digital 

format, available on our website at www.FriendsOfTheSmokies.org. In order to further the impact of 

our contributors’ resources for the Park’s benefit, we decided to eliminate printing of this publication 

whenever possible. If you would like a paper copy of this report, you may print it from home on your 

own computer, or you may request a copy mailed to you from our office (800-845-5665). This decision 

also reflects our commitment to conserving natural resources in and around Great Smoky Mountains 

National Park!

Friends Across The Country 

In 2008, more than 4,100 individuals, 

corporations, and foundations representing 

41 states and the District of Columbia made 

gifts to Friends of the Smokies, hailing from 

as far away as Puerto Rico to as close as 

Waynesville, NC. Friends of the Smokies 

enjoys tremendous generosity from all 

across the country! Please talk to your 

friends in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, 

New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, 

Rhode Island, and Utah about becoming 

Friends of the Smokies, so that we can boast 

supporters in every state!

In 2008, preparations were in earnest for the year-long 

75th Anniversary celebration in 2009, with sponsors from 

both sides of the Smokies lining up to help make it a 

success. Fundraising efforts began for Friends of the 

Smokies’ Trails Forever program. The Aslan Foundation 

of Knoxville matched the $500,000 raised for Trails 

Forever by Friends’ supporters in 2008, establishing the 

first $1 million towards our goal of a $2 million 

endowment for trail maintenance and improvements. 

Meanwhile, Toyota contributed $375,000 in addition to 

the $625,000 they gave in 2007 to reach the $1 million 

mark for improving Park education programs. 

Along with these important milestones, Friends of the 

Smokies’ members and donors helped us to reach more 

than $24 million raised since 1993 to help support needs 

in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Additionally, 

Friends gave more than $1.2 million to the Park in 2008 

for educational programs, historic preservation projects, 

protection of natural resources, cultural resources, and

wildlife, and backcountry improvements.

Funding continued for long-standing Park programs and needs like the Parks As Classrooms 

program, treatment for the Park’s eastern hemlock trees against the exotic invasive hemlock woolly 

adelgid, as well as for the park-related organizations Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, 

Discover Life In America, and the Appalachian Bear Rescue Center. 

Well-established fundraising events like the Evergreen Ball, the Picnic in Pittman for the Park, and 

the Friends Across the Mountains Telethon enjoyed great attendance and support, while newer events 

like the Neighbors in the Foothills and Spring for the Smokies helped make new Friends in the 

communities surrounding the Park. In 2008, Friends of the Smokies events raised more than $727,556 

through the generosity of special event sponsors and patrons alike. 

Friends of the Smokies’ commitment to improving the Park’s trails and facilities deepened with the 

debut of the Trails Forever work crew, as well as funding to refurbish the Little Cataloochee Trail, and 

the Double Springs shelter on the Appalachian Trail in the Smokies. 

In other developments, the online social media revolution led to Friends of the Smokies creating 

pages on Facebook and Twitter to communicate with a broad base of Park enthusiasts. More of our 

communications went digital with a quarterly e-newsletter for members. Friends’ online presence 

expanded with the debut of the Trails Forever website (www.SmokiesTrailsForever.org) where trail 

projects and photos help to recruit volunteers for the program and encourage donations to make more 

improvements possible. 

Thanks to the continued, generous, and faithful support of thousands of Friends of the Smokies, 

2008 was a very good year in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Parks as Classrooms 

Toyota’s gifts from 2007 and 2008 totaling $1 million to update and enhance existing Parks as 

Classrooms curriculum set a record for educational fundraising for Great Smoky Mountains National 

Park. When the first gift was received by Friends of the Smokies in 2007, planning began immediately. 

Implementation followed, and the Park hired a new employee to develop new programs and help 

existing staff to move initiatives forward. These efforts allowed the park’s popular Parks as Classrooms 

program for Grades K-8 to greatly bolster the number of students served. Parks as Classrooms serves 

over 18,000 students in counties bordering the park in Tennessee and North Carolina. Additionally, 

Toyota’s gifts led to creative Junior Ranger programs launched in summer 2008 for young visitors (ages 

5-12) and their families in addition to a new reward program for children over twelve—and for adults!

Since 2003, Friends of the Smokies has 

provided over $1 million in the ongoing battle 

against the hemlock woolly adelgid in Great 

Smoky Mountains National Park. Friends’ 

2008 funding helped to expand conservation 

areas in Great Smoky Mountains National 

Park to treat more old-growth hemlocks. The 

Park continues to rely on chemical treatments, 

as well as various biological controls, to 

aggressively attack this exotic invasive 

predator threatening the eastern hemlocks. 

Through 2008, more than 120,000 trees had 

been treated by hand in Great Smoky 

Mountains National Park.

Friends in Action • Our Volunteers 

In 2008, 90 volunteers gave 3,527 hours of their time to help Friends of the Smokies. Whether they 

assisted with office management, the annual telethon, or other special events, our volunteers made a 

tremendous contribution to both Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 

Using figures derived from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the non-profit group Independent Sector 

estimates the value of volunteer time in 2008 at $20.25 per hour. Using that figure, our volunteers 

contributed the equivalent of $71,421 to Friends of the Smokies last year. THANK YOU,

Friends Across the Mountains Telethon Volunteers = 205 Hours! 

Special thanks to the volunteer teams from First Tennessee Bank and Home Federal Bank for 

once again giving their time to the Friends Across the Mountains Telethon! 

Volunteers-In-Parks (VIPs) 

In Great Smoky Mountains National Park 2,777 people volunteered 117,537 hours directly with 

the Park through the Volunteers-In-Parks (VIP) program in Federal Fiscal Year 2008 (October 2007 – 

September 2008). Their labor is equivalent to 56 ½ full-time staff positions, or $2,293,147. VIPs help 

monitor stream health, pick up litter, repair and improve trails, conduct living history demonstrations, 

provide information to visitors, and so much more. They include individuals, couples, families, Boy 

Scout troops, school groups, civic groups, and various other combinations. Friends of the Smokies 

thanks all the volunteers for their assistance in preserving and protecting the Smokies!

Throughout the year, we receive wonderful letters and e-mails from our members and supporters 

explaining why they support Friends of the Smokies, or love the Park. In closing, we wanted to share 

some of those thoughts with you. Perhaps you feel the same way about being a Friend of the Smokies, 

or the time you’ve spent in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 

I am endlessly fascinated by the land 

and nature. I’m not taken so much by the 

great spectacle as I am by the seemingly 

insignificant. There are remote places 

tucked away from everything grand that 

seem, to me, to glow like small jewels. I 

often see something extraordinary in the 

ordinary…Nature itself is our greatest 

national treasure and conservation is 

about working with, not against, human

I was a young graduate student TOLD 

by his Biology professor that he must 

join…However, once I joined and came to 

the Smokies the first time (Summer of 

1955) I fell in love with the Park. I have 

returned many times, missing only the 

years 1957-1963 when I was in Grad 

school in the mid-west and northeast…It 

has been a real pleasure to note the 

biological changes, and see humaninduced 

management improvements for 

resources protection and species 

reintroductions that have occurred over 

the past many years.

away, was an avid lover of the Smokies 

and she passed that love on to me. We 

moved a lot when I was younger and for 

me, the Smokies were my home when I 

had no real hometown…The area really

place that was made so special for me by 

my own mother.
