Marina Rules
Hafan Pwllheli follows the guidelines issued by the Yacht Harbour Association and the British
Marine Federation which recommends that all marina users have a minimum third party
insurance of £3,000,000. A copy of the rules and regulations is available from the reception.
If you employ an independent contractor to work on your boat, please advise us beforehand so
we can ensure all necessary procedures and insurance requirements are followed correctly.
Bertholders should satisfy themselves that they have taken all reasonable precautions against
theft or damage. Cars and trailers are parked at their owner’s risk. All trailers and cradles
should be clearly marked with the boat or owner’s name while they are stored on the
company’s premises.
environmental Code of Conduct
Hafan Pwllheli’s objective is to maintain the balance between recreational craft and
environmental interests. We are committed to continuous improvement of our environmental
performance by fulfilling our duties relating to conservation, regulation and enhancement of
the marina and surroundings. Hafan Pwllheli operates a strict code of cleanliness and considers
environmental issues to be paramount. We therefore insist that the following rules are
observed at all times:
into the marina or harbour. There is a “pump out” facility for holding tanks located on
the fuel quay together with a chemical disposal unit.
• Two skips are provided for the disposal of domestic waste. There are also special
containers provided for the disposal of old batteries, waste engine oil and filters, paints/
solvents and recycle bins for glass.
• When removing old antifouling from the hull please cover the ground with sheets, place
old scrapings in bags and dispose in the hazardous waste storage container
• Take great care when taking on fuel that no spillages occur.
• The filling of fuel tanks is prohibited on the pontoons, please use the fuel quay.
• No grit or sand blasting, grinding, or hot work is permitted without the express written
consent of the Marina Management.
• We do not permit barbecues or any other open fire on the pontoons or marina site.
• If possible wash boats using water pressure; use mild cleaners if absolutely necessary. Do
not use highly caustic cleaners in the marina.
• Pets should be exercised off the marina. There is a suitable area beyond the boat park on
the peninsula. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times on the pontoons. Please do not
allow pets to foul marina site or any land adjacent to the marina, or to annoy other
bertholders.
Hafan Pwllheli is situated on the south side of the Lleyn Peninsula and provides access to some
of the best sailing waters in the UK including Cardigan Bay, Anglesey and the attractive harbours
along Ireland’s east coast.
Cruising in the waters off the Lleyn Peninsula, which combine moderate tidal and sea
conditions with a varied pattern of winds, offers the spectacular scenery of the Snowdonian
mountains as a backdrop. The rugged coastline has also been designated an ‘Area of
Outstanding National Beauty’.
New Quay, Aberdyfi, Barmouth, Porthmadog, St Tudwal’s Roads and Porth Dinllaen are all within
easy reach of the weekend or day sailer.
H M Customs
The nearest head office is Holyhead. Vessels requiring Customs services should call (01407)
760626 or alternatively the Liverpool office on 0151 933 7075.
Porthmadog
The busy town of Porthmadog is within easy reach of the weekend sailor looking for an
overnight stop. The harbour is well sheltered and there is plenty to see ashore. The town can
provide all supplies. Berthing is possible along the channel quay or mid-stream. It may be
possible to berth in the inner harbour. At the entrance to the channel is a bar which can make
entry impossible when a strong onshore wind blows over the ebb.
st tudwal's Roads
The St Tudwal’s islands are within easy reach of the day sailor. Cruise around the islands and
anchor for lunch in the shallow water off Abersoch beach.
It may also be possible to temporarily pick up one of the many moorings which stretch out
from South Caernarvonshire YC. A launch service is available. Ashore, the pretty village of
Abersoch can provide all supplies, as well as boatyard and chandlery.
bardsey island
The Sound between Bardsey Island and the headland should be treated with caution. The tidal
stream can race through the Sound at over 5 knots. Even in moderate winds, the sea state can
soon turn rough.
Porth dinllaen
The picturesque cove at Porth Dinllaen is an ideal destination for a weekend cruise in settled
weather, provided the wind is not blowing from the NE. There are a few moorings at the head
of the cove although these are usually taken. Otherwise anchor a little further out in the bay.
Ashore there is an excellent beach and a good pub. A breakwater, constructed of large boulders
and covered at high water, marks the northern point of the entrance to the cove.
the lleyn Peninsula
The Lleyn Peninsula is truly the jewel in the Welsh scenic crown. It starts at Snowdon’s peak
and reaches out to Bardsey Island, forming a land of outstanding natural beauty with many
areas protected by the National Trust as Wales’ Heritage Coastline.
The land is steeped in early Celtic religious history, with 20,000 saints allegedly buried on
Bardsey or Ynys Enlli - island of the tides. On the mainland, there are many examples of early
Christian churches such as St Mary’s at Bryncroes where St Mary’s Well was an important
watering place on the Pilgrim’s Route to Bardsey.
The Heritage North Coast
The Heritage North Coast offers breathtaking views from the top peaks of the ever dominant
Yr Eifl (The Rivals) mountains. Visitors to the area can enjoy the wonderful watersports and
surfing opportunities in the grand sweeping bay formed by Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn and Porth
Dinllaen, where a the 27 hole golf course is probably the finest in Wales.
Further along the Peninsula, Aberdaron’s beach is a delight while at nearby Porthoer, or
Whistling Sands, the white golden sand mysteriously whistles below your feet! Overlooking
Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth) at Rhiw, the lovely National Trust property Plas-yn-Rhiw is a
delightful 17th century Regency Manor House with many unusual and rare plants set in
ornamental gardens.
The Golden Coast
The Lleyn Peninsula is a haven for picturesque sailing - vast bays of sands, craggy cliffs and
secret coves. There are also plenty of opportunities for golf, tennis, horseriding, fishing and
walking.
Abersoch, with its miles of magnificent sandy beaches and ideal sailing conditions, has
developed a reputation as Wales’ Riviera. This traditional seaside town is full of charm and a
pleasure to visit.
Pwllheli is a bustling market town which now boasts one of the finest marinas in Britain.
Market day on Wednesday is a must, as is the town’s impressive leisure centre. At Boduan, the
Bodvel Adventure Park offers more holiday fun.
Along the coast at Criccieth is Llewelyn the Great’s dominating 13th century castle. In the
nearby village of Llanystumdwy, there is a fascinating museum and discovery trail of the the life
of Lloyd George, one of Britain’s greatest orators and statesmen.
At Porthmadog, ‘The Cob’ forms an attractive sailing harbour. Until earlier this century, the
town was a bustling shipping port for the slate trade, brought down from Blaenau Ffestiniog by
the Ffestiniog steam railway, now a major tourist attraction. The area’s maritime history is now
on display in a museum housed in the port’s old slate warehouse.
Near Porthmadog, there is the fine beach at Blackrock Sands and the pretty villages of Borth y
Gest and Tremadog, the native village of T.E. Lawrence, of Lawrence of Arabia fame. Other
local attractions include Bryncir Woollen Mill at Golan, the hands-on Porthmadog Pottery and
Portmeirion village.
Eifionydd and the mountains of Snowdonia
Inland lies the beautiful area of Eifionydd with its lush valleys, secret lakes and high rugged
mountains. Beddgelert is the gateway to Snowdonia and a centre for climbers and sightseers
via paths leading to the mountain peaks of Snowdon, Moel Hebog, Moelwyn and Cnicht. At
Beddgelert, the Rivers Glaslyn and Colwyn merge to flow through the breathtaking Aberglaslyn
Pass. The areas lakes and glacial rock formations are rich in mineral deposits and tourists can
experience the Victorian Sygun Copper Mine.
