James ^). He was born at Windyedge, in 1815, and in<br />

1842 he married Eliza, daughter of William Thomson, of<br />

Boness. At the age of 21 he went to New South Wales,<br />

where he became one of the largest and most successful<br />

stockholders in Australia. He resided sometimes in Sydney,<br />

Australia, and sometimes in Dunavon, Avondale, <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

He was proprietor of several farms in Avondale, and in the<br />

parish of Ocheltree in Ayrshire. He was proprietor of Bonnytown<br />

estate, which included the farms of Bonnytown,<br />

Drumboy, Auchengee, Ravenscroft, and Waberton. He was<br />

a justice of the peace for Lanarkshire. His largest estate in<br />

Australia was Canonbar, and, consists of 1,100,000 acres. It<br />

is grazed by 400,000 sheep. Three of Mr. Alison's sons are<br />

members of the legislative assembly of New South Wales.<br />

Mr. Alison is now deceased.
