was born at Winclyedge, <strong>Scotland</strong>, in 1760. He married<br />
Helen, daughter of Matthew Lawson, of Kilwakening, and<br />
became heir to that estate, and which in 1893 was owned by<br />
his grandson, Matthew Alison.<br />

31. Jean Alison,^ born at Windyedge in 1785; m. Alexander Morrison,<br />
of Cornevgroats, in Avondale, in 1806. His grandson was proprietor<br />
of the place in 1893. He was an own cousin. (See<br />

33. Matthew Alison,« born at Windyedge in 1793; ordained at Kilbarchan<br />
in Renfrewshire, <strong>Scotland</strong>, in 1818; installed at Mufflington,<br />
Juniata county, Penn., in 1842, and d. when minister there.<br />
He married Agnes, daughter of William Gemmell, of Frankville,<br />
Ayi-. His only surviving son is William M. Alison,6 who is<br />
the editor and proprietor of the paper in that town where his<br />
father was minister.<br />

James ^). He was born at Letham, Avondale, Lanarkshire,<br />
<strong>Scotland</strong>. He had the estate at Letham, comprising three<br />
farms, which originally belonged to Cairnduff.<br />

» Rev. James Allison," of Alexandria, Dumbartonshire, was educated in<br />
the University of Glasgow. After being licensed by the Hamilton Presbytery,<br />
he received calls from the congregations of Newburgh, Wolverhampton,<br />
and Oxenden Presbyterian church, London. In 1866 he was<br />
ordained as minister of Oxenden Chapel, London, a church which had as<br />
his predecessors several eminent men, such as the Rev. Dr. Jerment, the<br />
Rev. Dr. Broadfoot, and the Rev. Dr. Archer. There, in consequence<br />
of his health breaking down, he resigned his charge. After a few<br />
months' recreation, he was inducted minister of the <strong>Boston</strong> United Presbyterian<br />
church, Cupar-Fife. From Cupar he was translated to the<br />
United Presbyterian church, Alexandria, in the vale of Leven, county of<br />
Dumbarton. There he still ministers to a large and prosperous congre-<br />
gation.<br />
