appointed administratrix of his estate, Sept. 1, 1759.<br />

John Ellison of county of Burlington, X. J. Administration on his<br />

John Ellison and wife, llachel Ellison, of the city of New York, sold<br />

land at Perth Amboy, N. J., to John Griggs, Aug. 21, 1765. He was a<br />

sail maker.<br />

John Ellison's will was proven Nov. 17, 17S2, in Dutchess Co., N. Y.<br />

John Ellison's will, dated Dec. 23, 1784, recorded in surrogate's ofifice.<br />

New York, N. Y. He mentions his daughter, Martha Dorland, his<br />

brother, Richard Ellison, his father, Richard Ellison, his brother, Samuel<br />

Ellison, and his sister, Freelove Piatt.<br />

James Ellison of Hempstead, N. Y., will dated Feb. 19, 1780. He mentions<br />

his wife, Elizabeth Ellison, his son, William Ellison, and his surviving<br />

daughters, Freelove Ellison, Mary Ellison, Elizabeth Ellison, Hannah<br />

Ellison ;<br />

one of the witnesses was Richard Ellison.<br />

William Ellison, of New York, N. Y. Cabinet maker. Made a will,<br />

dated Sept. 3, 1788. He had a- wife, Margaret Ellison, and a daughter,<br />

Mary Ellison. He married Margaret Brandt, April 19, 1779.<br />

Seth Ellison, " of the southward of the city of Perth Amboy," N. J.,<br />

made a will March 20, 1770, proven May 24, 1770. He mentions his eldest<br />

son, Thomas Ellison, daughter, Sarah Lumberson; to son Joseph Ellison<br />

one half the land the father lived upon was given. His daughter Martha<br />

Buckalew received land of him in Middletown, county of Monmouth, N.<br />

J. His son, Samuel Ellison, was deceased, but the sons of the latter,<br />

Seth Ellison and Samuel Ellison, were remembered in this will. (See previous<br />

THE ELLISONS OF NEW WINDSOR AND NEWBURG, N. Y.<br />

Cutlibert Ellison ^ was sheriff of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England,<br />

in 1544, and was mayor in 1549 and to 1554. He had<br />

a grandson, Cuthbert Ellison, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. The<br />

son of the latter, Christopher Ellison, also a resident of Newcastle,<br />

was born Jan. 26, 1612 ; died 1695. He had a son.<br />

John Ellison, born 1688, emigrated to America and settled<br />

in New York, N. Y. The history of Orange county, N. Y.,<br />

p. 214, says that he secured a claim to property in New Windsor,<br />

Webster county, N. Y., in 1718, by an investment of<br />

£160, and had an additional claim by a loan of £140, in 1721,<br />

and perfected the "title to the property in May, 1723." ^<br />

-John Ellison made his will in 1718, but he may not have died till sometime<br />

later. He had a brother, William Ellison, in England, as appears<br />

from that document. See former quotations from probate records,<br />

which give his children. The preceding quotations from probate and<br />

other records relating to the Ellisons throw great light upon the Ellison<br />

family of New Windsor and Newburg, N. Y., and corroborate some of<br />

the information received from a distinct source. The author has not<br />

made a special studij of the history and genealogy of the Ellisons, but
