Elmer, was founder and president. Mr. Allison has a wide<br />

knowledge of the department of law to which he has given<br />

his attention. He is a member of the college Greek letter<br />

society, Delta Kappa Epsilon, and is also a director in the<br />

Sydenham post-graduate course and hospital of the city of<br />

New York. He is a director of the New York, <strong>Boston</strong>, Albany,<br />

& Schenectady Railway company, and director and president<br />

of the " Allison Drug Company " of New York city, and of<br />

Orange, N. J., and director and vice-president of "The Chappaqua<br />

Mineral Spring Company." He married, Jan. 2, 1872,<br />

Edith A., daughter of George and Ellen (Douglass) Thurber,<br />

who was born, Nov. 14, 1849, at Patchogue, Long Island,<br />

New York. Residence, Hempstead, Queens county. Long<br />

Isaac,^ Isaac,^ Joseph^). Rev. Charles E. Allison was born<br />

at Slate Hill, town of Wawayanda, Orange county, N. Y.,<br />

July 21, 1847. On his maternal side he is the eighth generation<br />

in descent from Edward Elmer, a Puritan, who came<br />

from England to <strong>Boston</strong>, Mass., in 1632, and settled at Hartford,<br />

Conn., in 1636, as one of the original proprietors of<br />

the site of the city. His childhood was spent at the homestead,<br />

near Amity, and at Chester, N. Y. He united with<br />

the Presbyterian church in Chester, March 5, 1865. His<br />

preparatory course was received at the Chester academy,<br />

where he won the first prize for excellence of declamation.<br />

He entered Hamilton college, Clinton, N. Y., where he was<br />

graduated in 1870. During his junior year he was appointed<br />

one of the Clark prize orators of his class.<br />

His theological studies were pursued at Union Theological<br />

seminary. New York, N. Y., where he graduated in May,<br />

1874, and was licensed to preach by the Hudson, N. Y., Presbytery,<br />

April 21, 1875. During his senior year in the seminary<br />

he preached in Yonkers, N. Y., and also after his<br />

graduation. On April 21, 1879, he assisted in the organization<br />

of the Dayspring Presbyterian church in Yonkers, and<br />

was ordained and installed over that church by the Westchester<br />

presbytery April 30, 1879.
