which was built up that thriving village. He was director<br />

of the First National Bank, the Sayre water company,<br />

the Cayuga wheel fonndry, the Sayre pipe foundry, and the<br />

Sayre steam forge company. In 1881 he was appointed, by<br />

President Gartield, second assistant postmaster-general, and<br />

held this position for three years, where he was a most faith-<br />

ful and eiificient oiificer. In 1884 he resigned, and organized<br />

the American Surety company at New York city, became its<br />

president, and remained such until his death at his home in<br />

New York, 54 West 20th street. He was a man of high<br />

character and greatly admired. As a banker and president<br />

of the American Surety company, he proved that he had<br />

"a genius for business." He married, June 16, 1870, Sarah<br />

France, of Middletown, N. Y. She was daughter of J. F.<br />

and Isabella France. She with her children live in the city<br />

of New York.<br />

scientific department of Yale college in 1888, and left college<br />

on account of liis father's death.<br />

). He was born at Slate Hill, town of Wa-<br />

wayanda, Orange county, N. Y., March 4, 1846. On his<br />

maternal side he is the eighth generation in descent from<br />

Edward Elmer, a Puritan, who came from England to <strong>Boston</strong>,<br />

Mass., in 1632. His childhood and youth were spent on the<br />

homestead, and at Chester, N. Y., and early in life at tlie latter<br />

place he united with the Presbyterian church. He was<br />

educated at the public schools of Chester, prepared for college<br />

under Prof. Edward F. B. Orton at Chester academy,<br />

where he received first prize for superiority in declamation, and<br />

graduated at Hamilton college, Clinton, N. Y., in 1867, where<br />

he received the second prize in chemistry.<br />

He was principal of<br />

the academy and general superintendent of schools at Mount<br />

Morris, N. Y., following his graduation. His law studies<br />

were pursued with Judge David F. Gedney of Goshen, Orange<br />

county, N. Y. After he was admitted to the bar, he practised<br />

at Middletown, Orange county, N. Y., and for a brief<br />

time in Minnesota. Since 1887 he has been in the law department<br />

of the American Surety company at 160 Broadway, New<br />

York, N. Y., of which company his cousin, Richard Allison
