1524. Floyd Vail," son of Amy Knapp Allison (wife of Asa Vail»), was<br />

b. Feb. 4, 1854, near Amity, town of Warwick, Orange Co.,<br />

N. Y. ; migrated with his parents to Pittsburgh, Penn., thence<br />

to Jersey City, N. J., where he has since resided. He graduated<br />

from the public schools of that city afterwards attended<br />

for a short time one in Rockland county. New York; was then<br />

instructed in private schools in New York city, and finally<br />

studied with private tutors. He engaged for several years in<br />

mercantile business, but left it to enter the office of "Wallace's<br />

Monthly " in New York, as an editorial and general writer. He<br />

has since contributed to The Mail and Express of New York<br />

city, and to other periodicals under the nom de plume of<br />

Flambeau.- He has translated from the French " The Two<br />

Mottoes," ''The Tattooed King," etc., and he is the author of<br />

Courted and Won in the Mountains," " His Choice," etc. In<br />

1879 he became secretary to the banking house of R. P. Flower<br />

& Co., in New York city, and ijrivate secretary to Hon. Roswell<br />

P. Flower (now governor of New York state),, and in 1885<br />

was appointed secretary and treasurer of the Kingston and Pembroke<br />

Railway Co., whicli position he at present holds. He m.,<br />

Nov. 22, 1876. Sarah J. Crow. She was b. in Jersey City,<br />

N. J., Oct. 19, 1856. She is dau. of David Johnson and Mary<br />

(Jones) Crow, of Jersey City. His stately house is finely situated<br />

in Jersey City Heights, overlooking New York city and<br />

harbor, and within easy distance of the city hall in New York.<br />

Joseph 1). He was born in the town of Warwick, near<br />

Amity, Orange county, N. Y., June 30, 1818 ; married, Jan. 18,<br />

1844, Martha Frances, daughter of James Sullinger, a native<br />

of Kentucky. She was born in Boone county, Mo., April 5,<br />

1825 ; died in Mexico, Mo., Dec. 10, 1884, aged 59 years, 8<br />

months. She was a faithful Christian, a loving and devoted<br />

wife and mother. At her death the Audrain County Medi<br />
