Elmer,^ Elizabeth Allison,* Richard,^ Isaac,^ Joseph^). He<br />

was born in Sussex Co., N. Y,, Aug. 28, 1808. He was<br />

grandson of Dr. William Elmer, of Goshen, N. Y., and<br />

Richard Allison, of Wawayanda, N. Y., and a descendant of<br />

Edward Elmer, who came to America in 1632, and settled in<br />

Hartford, Conn., in 1636, and was one of the original proprietors<br />

of the site of the city. Thrown upon his own resources<br />

at an early age, he also had the care and responsibility of the<br />

education of his brothers and sisters. He was a farmer.<br />

Under his guidance one brother entered college and became a<br />

clergyman, and the other engaged in business. Through the<br />

influence of his brother. Rev. Nathaniel Elmer, pastor of a Presbyterian<br />

church in Waverly, N, Y., he, in Nov., 1850, was induced<br />

to locate in that place. His business was insurance and<br />

real estate. He became closely identified with the interests<br />

and growth of that town. With its schools and churches, and<br />

matters pertaining to the advancement of the morals of the com-<br />

munity, he was always interestedly connected. He was quiet<br />

and unobtrusive in his manners. He married, Sept. 11, 1832,<br />

Charlotte, daughter of Col. Jonathan and Catherine (Stew-
