was b. in Hackettstown, June 10, 1824, and in 1892 resides in<br />

Washington, D. C. Mr. Elmer was a lawyer; res. in Morristown<br />

and Newark, N. J., and in Jersey City, N. J., from 1856<br />

to 1889. He died in Washington, D. C, July 10,<br />

deceased. He was b. at New Orleans, La. At the age of<br />

twenty-three he entered the U. S. service as private in the 165th<br />

Regt. N. Y. Vols. ; March 15, 1864, made 2d lieut. of Co. B, 87<br />

U. S. colored infantry stationed at New Orleans, La., and Aug.<br />

31, 1865, was transferred to 84th Regt. U. S. colored infantry,<br />

and was aid-de-camp to General Doolittle. Children: Elmer<br />

Hampstead Ames,' b. Jersey City, N. J., Jan. 23, 1876. Henry<br />

years in Jersey City and one year in Washington, and in 1881<br />

was appointed to a position in the post-office department in<br />

Washington, D. C. He is now assistant chief clerk.<br />

N. J., till 1870, and then removed to St. Louis, Mo.; is buried<br />

in Newark, N. J. In a letter written in 1874 she<br />
