James,* Joseph,-^ William,^ John i). He was born in New Cas-<br />

tle, N. B., March 31, 1850. His family removed to Sackville,<br />

N. B., when he was four years of age, and there he was<br />

educated at Mount Allison academy and college, founded by<br />

his uncle, Charles F. Allison. In 1871 he became a bookkeeper<br />

for Douall & Miller, a large business house in Halifax,<br />

N. S. There his business faculties unfolded rapidly, and<br />

later he went into the commission business, and later still into<br />

partnership with the late John P. Mott, and in 1876 his name<br />

appeared as a member of the firm of John P. Mott & Co.,<br />

where he has since been an active member. In its interest<br />

he has travelled throughout the maritime provinces, through<br />

Quebec and Ontario, and other parts of Canada. Since the<br />

death of John P. Mott, in 1890, Mr. Allison has been the<br />

manager and executor of the estate, which is above three<br />

fourths of a million of dollars in value. He is a director in<br />

the People's Bank of Halifax ; a director in the Eastern Assurance<br />

Company (capital 11,000,000) ;<br />

Glasgow Iron, Coal and Railway Co. (capital 81,000,000) ;<br />

director in the Nova Scotia Permanent Benefit Building<br />

Society and Savings Fund, one of the largest monetary institutions<br />

in the lower provinces; a director in the Ocean<br />

Mutual JNIarine Insurance Co., and a director in the Nova<br />

Scotia Steam Packet Co. His various monetary and commercial<br />

responsibilities tax his powers heavily, but not beyond<br />

their strength. He married, Oct. 10, 1876, Mary Fres-<br />

co tt, of Bail Virte, N. B. No children. Resides at Hali-<br />
