Johni). jjg ^as born on the Mantua Farm in Newport,<br />

Hants county, Nova Scotia, May 16, 1821. He was educated<br />

at Annapolis, N. S., and Dalhousie college in Halifax, N. S.<br />

In September, 1849, he was ordained to the ministry in<br />

Fredericton, New Brunswick. He afterward graduated as<br />

A. B. and A. M. at Syracuse University, N. Y., was pastor of<br />

the Methodist Episcopal church at Cornwallis, N. S., Woodstock,<br />

N. B., St. John, N. B., and was principal of the Mount<br />

Allison Ladies' academy at Sackville, N. B., for eight years.<br />

In 1863 he travelled in England, <strong>Scotland</strong>, Belgium, France,<br />

Switzerland, and Germany. In 1864-'65 he was pastor of a<br />

church in Buffalo, N. Y., and later was pastor four years in<br />

Milwaukee, Wis. In 1872 he established the "Allison Classic"<br />

academy at Oconomowoc, Wis. Was pastor at Lanes-<br />

of the Minnesota state<br />

boro', Minn., for three years ; chaplain<br />

senate in 1885 ; lectured for the Minnesota State Teachers'<br />

Institute for three years. In 1891 he was writing for the<br />

press and lecturing. He was, in Nova Scotia, considered one<br />

of the first pulpit orators in the maritime provinces. He mar-<br />

ried in Fredericton, N. B., Nov. 24, 1847, Martha Louisa,<br />

daughter of Richard and Mary Davis (Hosier) Knight. Her<br />

father was of Exeter, England. She was born, Feb. 26,<br />

1823, in Newfoundland. She was his excellent lielper in his<br />

life work, and was an A. B. and A. M. of Genesee college,<br />

Lima, Livingston county, N. Y. She died in 1892. He resided<br />

at Minneapolis, Minn., and d. July 19, 1893.<br />
