British America as his. He founded the Mount Allison<br />

educational institutions, consisting of a boys' school, ladies'<br />

college, and university. They are under the control of the<br />

Methodist church of Canada, of which Mr. Allison was an<br />

earnest member. In him the noblest character was associated<br />

with the most unassuming demeanor.<br />

William,^ John^). He was born in Cornwallis, N. S., September<br />

30, 1801 ; married in July, 1839, Sarah Abrams, a<br />

native of <strong>Scotland</strong>, and who is still living in 1892. Mr.<br />

Allison began his business life in Halifax, and after some<br />

years he went to Miramichi, N. B., and with his partner carried<br />

on an extensive business under the name of Crane &<br />

Allison. While there he lost heavily by a great fire. In<br />

1854 he removed to Sackville, N. B., and engaged in business.<br />

That place ever after was his home. By his integrity and high<br />

sense of honor he won the respect and esteem of all. He possessed<br />

courtly manners of the old school. Till within a year<br />

of his death his health was perfect, with none of the infirmi-<br />

ties of age. His sight and hearing and mental faculties<br />

were good to the last. He celebrated his golden wedding in<br />

July, 1889. He died at 11:30 a. m., on Sunday, December<br />

1, 1890.<br />

23, 1806, and died at Sackville, N. B., May 29, 1863. He<br />

married Mary A., daughter of Oliver and Sarah A. Cogswell,<br />

at Sackville, N. B., Dec. 17, 1839. She was born at
