years of age, he went into a store to learn the dry goods business,
at which he has eVer since been engaged. In 1866 he
started on his own account, in partnership with James Manchester
and James F. Robertson, under the firm name of Manchester,
Robertson & Allison, They are still in trade, and
have built up the largest wholesale and retail trade business

William,^ John i). He was born in Horton, N. S., December
of Matthew
1, 1795 ; married, July, 1821, Margaret, daughter
and (Jenkins) Elder. She was born in Falmouth, N. S.,
June 12, 1799 ; died in Newport, N. S., March, 1872. Her
father was a native of county of Donegal, Ireland, and lived
in Falmouth, N. S. Mr. Allison was a farmer, and resided
in Horton, N. S., from 1795 to 1804, and in Newport, N. S.,
from 1804 till his death in 1867. He was one of the leading
magistrates of Newport, and for five years represented that
township in the provincial parliament. He was Methodist
in his religious affiliations.
