raiser, and at the commencement of tlie war was in good<br />

circumstances. He resided in Cooper county, Mo., and was<br />

a justice of the peace ; assessor in Cooper count}^ in 1858.<br />

He had a fine memory, and was a good conversationalist. He<br />

was a Whig, then a Republican in politics, and a Baptist in<br />

his religious faith. He lived a blameless life. He was a staunch<br />

Unionist during the war. He kept open house for his neighbors<br />

and strangers for fifty-five years. He was a great hunter,<br />

and could use his rifle almost to perfection. He was six feet<br />

two and one half inches in height and weighed 185 pounds.<br />

He died March 18, 1877, at his son's in Pilot Grove, Mo.<br />
