636. Thomas Johnston Allison^ [621] (William M.,^<br />

Thomas,^ William i). He was born at Bethany Church, N. C,<br />

some ten miles north of vStatesville, Feb. 2, 1849 ; married,<br />

Nov. 23, 1870, Bettie Crawford Chunn, daughter of Matthew<br />

Lock and Caroline (Foard ) Chunn, and granddaughter of<br />

William and Mary (Lock) Chunn, of near China Grove,<br />

Rowan county, N. C. Mrs. Allison was born Aug. 31, 1853,<br />

near Salisbury, N. C. Mr. Allison was born on the plantation<br />

where his great-grandfather settled more than a century ago,<br />

and which was owned by his grandfather and his father. The<br />

Allisons were the first to acquire land in the opening of the<br />

settlement, and the first deeds given in the county were given<br />

to Allisons. They were large real estate owners, often buying<br />

and rarely selling land. Mr. Allison received a portion<br />

of his education at Davidson college, N. C. He was a farmer<br />

and tanner, the same as his predecessors. He added the manufacture<br />

of harness and saddlery to his business, and dealt in<br />

saddlery and hardware till 1884. He has served as county<br />

commissioner ; was elected sheriff of Iredell county, N. C,<br />

in 1884, and held the position till he was appointed by President<br />

Cleveland, in 1893, United States marshal for the<br />

Western District of<br />

643. Thomas Johnston Allison'^ [633] (James,^ Thomas,^<br />

Robert^). He was born at the homestead in Cabarrus county,<br />

N. C, May 30, 1849, and lived there till his father's removal<br />

to Davidson College, N. C, in 1868. He entered Davidson col-<br />

lege in 1867, and was graduated in 1871, with the degree of<br />

A. B., and received the degree of A. m. in 1874, and in the<br />

spring of 1868 united with the Davidson College Presbyterian<br />

church. In 1871 he entered the Union Theological seminary<br />

at Hampden Sidney, Va., and graduated in 1874 ; was licensed<br />

by the Concord, N. C, presbytery in 1874, and in August<br />

accepted a call to the Presbyterian church at Tarboro, N. C.<br />

He was ordained and installed on Nov. 8, 1875, preaching<br />

once a month at Kingston, and at Rocky Mount. On Sept.<br />

12, 1876, he married Jeannette, daughter of Rev. John Tillett.<br />

Resigning his charge in 1877, he preached at Rockingham and<br />

Lumberton, N. C. In 1879 he was installed over the church
