SAIMUEL ALLISON, OF GBEENE COUNTY, OHIO. 137<br />

Spring Garden in 1846, and held the office many years, till<br />

he was elected an associate law judge of the court of common<br />

pleas of the first judicial district of Pennsylvania. In 1865<br />

he succeeded to the presidency of the court, and has to the<br />

present (1892) held that position—a period of forty years.<br />

Has been five times elected, the last two times without opposition,<br />

receiving at the last election 145,000 votes with none<br />

against him. He married in 1843, and has a family. Residence<br />

Philadelphia, Penn.^<br />

520. Samuel Allison^ was born in Northumberland county,<br />

Penn., about 1785, and it is said his father was a chaplain in<br />

the Revolutionary army. INIr. Allison v/as in the 1812-'15 war.<br />

He married Annie Caldwell, of Northumberland county,<br />

Penn., and about 1816 he took up military lands in Greene<br />

county, Ohio.<br />

521. James Allison,' born about 1817, was a prosperous mei-cliant and<br />

banker; was prominent in constructing the first railroad in that<br />

locality, and built the first gasworks in Xenia, Ohio. He m.<br />

Anne, dau. of Captain Matthew Corey. He d. June, 1864.<br />

They had but one child.<br />

522. Matthew Corey Allison,'^ b. in Xenia, Ohio, Dec. 18, 1840; manufacturer<br />

and banker, at Xenia, Ohio; educated at Wittemburg;<br />

and m. Frances, dau. of Rev. John Elkin, d. d. He d. May 2,<br />

1888. Children:<br />

523. James Ekin Allison,^ b. Xenia, Ohio, May 10, 1865; graduated at<br />

Hai'vard University in 18S7. Eemoved to Nashville, Tenn.,<br />

in 1888, and resides there in 1893. He is a member of the Hermitage<br />

Club.<br />

524. Frederica Lee Allison,* b. Xenia, Ohio, July 30, 1860; m. George Gill<br />

Whitaker, of St. Louis, Mo., in 1889.<br />

525. Matthew Herbert Allison,* b. Xenia, Ohio, Oct, 30, 1867; m. in 1886,<br />

Mary Pettengill, of Ithaca, Mich.<br />

ALLISONS OF EAMELTON, COUNTY OF DONEGAL, IRELAND,<br />

MEDDLETOWN, PENN., AND TRENTON, N. J.<br />

These Allisons descended from a Scotch family who came<br />

over from <strong>Scotland</strong> at the time of the Plantation of Ulster ;<br />

they left their native land during the religious persecution.<br />

There was one woman of the Allison family, called Isabella<br />

Allison, who with another, called Marion Harvey, was put<br />

to death. They were chained out in the sea till the tide<br />

came in, and when it was surging into their mouths, were<br />
