ton, N. H., and his third cousin. He resided on the home<br />

farm in Diinbartou ; was appointed a colonel in the militia<br />

in 1820, and often filled offices of trust in his native town.<br />

He was town clerk in 1824, 1833-44; selectman in 1846 and<br />

1847; was appointed justice of the peace in 1830. He was<br />

an intelligent and public spirited man.<br />

business ever since that time; a Democrat in politics; an<br />

Episcopalian; was five years a freeholder, for fourteen years<br />

a member of the board of education, and has been superintendent<br />

of city schools since 1885. Children:<br />

Samuel," SamueP). He was born in Dunbarton, N. H.,<br />

March 14, 1791. While in his young manhood, in 1817,<br />

he went to Hammond, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., where<br />

he was a school teacher. He married, in 1819, Sally Barker,<br />

daughter of Jeduthan (of Connecticut) and Lucy A.<br />

(Pond) Barker, of Vergennes, Vt., born at Ogdensburg,<br />

N. Y., Feb. 28, 1802. He owned a small farm w^here he<br />

lived till about 1840, when he sold it and removed to Rossie,<br />

St. Lawrence county, N. Y., where he lived for twenty years,<br />

when he removed to the beautiful village of Gouverneur, St.<br />

Lawrence county, N. Y. He attained a competence, was an<br />

attendant of the Episcopal church, and a Democrat in his<br />

politics. He died of small-pox, Jan. 24, 1872. He was a<br />

soldier of the 1812-'15 war. Mrs. Stinson was a member of<br />

the Episcopal church, and after the death of her husband<br />

lived with her daughters. She was a strong-minded, ener-
