A manufacturer, machinist, and farmer. He m. Mary, daughter<br />

of Eev. David Annan, March 81, 1813. She d. at Springfield,<br />

Vt., Feb. 9, 1828, aged 38 years, 5 months. He m., second,<br />

Mrs. Fannie Moore Priest, widow of Dr. J. B. Priest. She<br />

d. Jan. 6, 1876, aged 85 years. He d. July 8, 1868. Children:<br />

Hon. Nathaniel Holmes,' b. Peterborough, N. H., July 2, 1814. Hon.<br />

Nathaniel Holmes graduated at Harvard university in 1837.<br />

Eeceived the degree of M. A. in 1859; was admitted to the bar<br />

in <strong>Boston</strong>, Mass., in 1839, and immediately commenced the<br />

practice of law in St. Louis, Mo. Was circuit attorney for the<br />

county of St. Louis in 1846. From 1853 to 1855 was counsellor<br />

of the board of public schools of St. Louis, and from 1862 to<br />

1865 was counsellor of the North Missouri Railroad company..<br />

In June, 1865, he was appointed one of the judges of the supreme<br />

court of Missouri by Gov. Thomas C. Fletcher. He<br />

resigned in 1868 and accepted the Royall professorship of law<br />

in Harvard university, which he resigned in 1872 and resumed<br />

his profession in St. Louis. He published in 1866 " The Authorship<br />

of Shakespeare," which has passed through several editions.<br />

He was never married. Res. 7 Holyoke Place, Cambridge,<br />

Mass.<br />

lege in 1870; M. D. of Bellevue Medical college, N. Y., in 1874;<br />

city physician at Keene, N. H., and examining surgeon on the<br />

board of pensions; d. at Brooklyn, N. Y., Feb. 25, 1885. He<br />

m., Oct. 25, 1876, Emily M. Crossfield, daughter of Captain<br />

Crossfield, of Keene, N. H., who was killed at Gettysburg. She<br />

is a music teacher; was b. Dec. 31, 1854; res. Watertown, Mass.<br />

Samuel Allison Holmes,' b. at Springfield, Vt., Feb. 23, 1823; was<br />

fitted for college at Phillips Exeter academy (class of '38);<br />

entered the Sojihomore class of Dartmouth college in 1841;<br />

left in his Junior year; studied law, and was admitted to the<br />

bar at St. Louis, Mo., in 1844. He was first lieutenant and<br />

adjutant of Lieutenant-Colonel Euston's St. Louis battalion in<br />

the Mexican war (1845-'47), and colonel of the 10th and 40th
