2012 is rebuilding year for boys’ golf
The 2012 South Central Calhoun Titans Boys’
golf team will have good participation but not much
experience, according to Barry Stevens, head boys’
golf coach.
“The second season of SCC boys golf entails a major
rebuilding year,” Stevens said. “We have two returning
letter winners from last year’s senior-dominated team

that fi nished second in the Twin Lakes Conference
and fi nished with an 8-2 dual meet record .”
Adding to the challenges faced by the team, this year
the conference has expanded to a super conference.
“The team hopes to be competitive in the fi rst season
of the combined super conference and will be building
for the future ,” Stevens said.
“The Titans have one second team all conference
returner in junior Jordan Lietz and varsity returner
Nathan Christensen. The success of this year’s team
depends a lot on who will step up from the junior
varsity ranks, on a day-to-day basis, for the top six
varsity spots,” he added.

Girls’ Golf team works at improving
The South Central Calhoun Girls’ Golf team members
working at improving their play for the 2012 season,
according to head girls’ golf coach Kathy Fortune.
“We have experienced players leading the team with
some promising younger players. The team has good work
habits and is improving each day,” Fortune said.
She adds, “Major concerns are to keep everyone
healthy and that we find the consistent golf swings to be
competitive.”
Fortune has been coaching 18 years and was head coach
of the Rockwell City/Lytton girls’ golf team before the
Southern Cal and RCL districts started sharing all sports
programs last school year. The first year of shared golf,
Scott Trost, former head coach for SC girls’ golf served
as head SCC coach with Fortune serving as assistant. This
year, Trost is assisting Fortune.
“This years Twin Lakes Conference is being played

differently than in the past years,” Fortune said, “We will
compete in ten dual (boy/girl, v/jv) meets. You play five
home meets and five away meets. Then you compete in an
18-hole Conference Tournament held at Lakeside in Fort
Dodge.”
She added, “It will be interesting to see how things play
out with the different format. We will be competitive.”
Among the key returners Tori Jones, a senior, finished
fourt at Lakeside in Fort Dodge last year and Kristin
Pedersen finished third in the Twin Lakes Conference,
They were both named Academic All Conference.

Tori Jones, Senior - Finished 14 th in Twin Lakes
Conference, 3 rd at MNW/SCC Tournament, 18 th at Districts
at Fort Dodge Lakeside, 2 nd Team All-Conference, and
Academic All-Conference. “Tori had the lowest team
average last season. She is a competitive, steady player,
and team leader.”
Kristen Pedersen, Junior - Finished 9 th @ MNW/SCC
Tournament, and Academic All-Conference. “Kristen is a
consistent player looking to lower her score each time out.”

Caitlin Collins, Junior – “Caitlin played junior varsity
last year and was getting better with experience. She just
needs to find that consistent swing path.”
Megan Miller, Junior – “Megan also played junior varsity
last year and is working on finding a consistent swing to
making good contact to advance the ball.”
Laura Johnson, Sophomore – “Last year was her first year
of playing and she has made good improvement. She had
the lowest average for the junior varsity last season. She is
working hard to become a better player with lower scores.

Junior girls need to step up as track team leaders
The South Central Calhoun Girls’ Field and Track team
is a young team without any returning seniors, the only
senior being Rita Horgan, a foreign exchange student from
Portugal.
My team is very young and inexperienced in key areas,”
Brian Knapp, head coach for the girls’ track team, “We have
lost some excellent track and field athletes to graduation
last year and a couple of kids didn’t come out this year
who played key roles on last year’s team. However, our
numbers are excellent with 30 girls out which will give us
a lot of depth.”
Knapp has been teaching and coaching in the Southern
Cal/SCC school system for 25 years, 24 as head girls
track coach. Most of that time, Carol Newland has been
his assistant. They have been a team for 23 years. Also,
the girls’ team coaches and the boys’ team coaches work
closely with other during the season.
“We will just need some new faces to step in and lead this
team. My junior class of leaders have been excellent so far
and I look to them to step it up.”

Regarding the conference outlook, Knapp said, “I would
pick East Sac County as the favorite in the conference
title chase. With the new alignment of the Twin Lakes
Conference, Sioux Central would be my pick as the toughest
team coming in from the old Northwest Conference. Strong
tradition there with excellent coaches. Of course traditional
powers Manson-NW and PAC will be tough as well.”

SCC Boys’ Track season depends on effort
Steady improvement will be the key to a successful boys’
track season this year according to Bryan Case, head coach.
“Our team will have to focus on making small
improvements throughout the year without getting
frustrated. We had a tremendous amount of success last
year, but we’ll have to put 2011 behind us and move
forward.” Case said,
Regarding team strengths, Case said, “I feel like we’ll
have a very competent team in all events this year.
However, I think our overall strength will come from our
mid-distance and distance personnel. We’ll have a couple
of good sprint events and our hurdles should be just fine.

some time to develop.”
Regarding the season outlook, Case said, “I think we can
have a tremendous year if our team continues to work hard
and strive for their best. As far as the conference race goes,
I think it’s wide open this year. I’m confident we can finish
in the top half.”
Case is being assisted by Dennis Siefken and Carol
Newland.
Top returning athletes include:
Brett Monahan – senior, on 2011 state champion 4 x 400
team, also ran at state on 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 (letter winner).
Taylor Davis – senior, mid-distance, distance (letter
winner).
Kyler Case – sophomore, sprints, long jump, hurdles,
2011 state 4 x 100 team (letter winner).
Jake Petzenhauser – sophomore, sprints, mid-distance,
hurdles, high jump, 2011 state 4 x 200 team (letter winner).
Matt Nieland – sophomore mid-distance/distance,
hurdles.
Other returning upperclassmen include: Kirby Vogel,
