In Season
Weaving the Wild
Join us for our fi rst of two free summer family events when international costume
designer and dancer Annie Hickman performs “Weaving the Wild” at Boerner Botanical
Gardens on Sunday, July 23rd. Performances are at 4 pm and 6:30 pm, with family activities
from 5 to 7:30 pm.
Ms. Hickman has a background in sculpture and
dance and has made costumes for Sesame Street
Live, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and for Off-
Broadway plays. Her costumes, resembling the
unique attributes of our insect friends, are woven
from intricate baskets.
“Whether you play before audiences of children, adults
or any combination, they are spellbound, charmed and
completely in love with you and your creativity.”
– The National Theatre, Washington, DC
“Everybody, young and old, was enthralled by Ms. Hickman’s artful creatures. Your insect
costumes … are living sculptures. – Wayne County Council for the Arts, NY
This is the only Midwest performance of Weaving the Wild this summer, brought to you by
a generous grant from the Ella Mae Siebert Foundation. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs
and blankets to enjoy this rare opportunity to see our insect world brought to life with
music, costumes and dance. Visit www.weavingthewild.com for more information.
UW Extension at BBG
Have you got a sick plant or yard? Bring your sample to the UW Extension plant clinic
site on Thursday evenings now through September from 3 PM to 6 PM to have your
questions answered by trained UW Extension volunteers.
Plant Health Field Days
The 2006 Trial Garden and Plant Health Field Day, scheduled for Thursday, August 3rd is
a unique opportunity to view and learn more about new and upcoming plant cultivars and
current cultural and plant health practices. This day long course is designed for people in
the horticultural industry; however, interested individuals are welcome. To register for this
course, please contact Mary Chilson at 262-548-7775.
From the Garden
2006 Perennial Plant of the Year
The Perennial Plant Association has named Dianthus gratianopolitanus ‘Feuerhexe’ (also
known as Firewitch) 2006 Perennial Plant of the Year.
The common name is Cheddar Pink. The origin of the term “pink” is from the Dutch Pinkster
or the German Pfi ngsten for Pentecost, the time during which the plants bloom. Cheddar pinks
are named for Cheddar Gorge in southwest England, one of the locations where it grows wild.
This cultivar has spicy clove-scented fl owers, which face upward. Placement near a walkway
allows extra scent as passersby brush the fragrant blossoms. It is a perfect choice for a rock
garden, in wall crevices or as ground cover on a sunny slope. It is an evergreen selection with
bluish-gray, silvery foliage and purplish-pink fragrant fl owers in mid-spring. Rebloom can occur
in the summer and into the fall. The bronze fall color of plumbago is sensational.
Cheddar Pink is hardy from zones 3 to 9. Plants have foliage 3 to 4 inches tall and 6 to 12
inches wide. Flowers will reach 6 to 8 inches high. This perennial performs best in full sun in
well-drained soils.
2006 Herb of the Year
The International Herb Association has designated Scented Geraniums as their Herb of the
Year for 2006.
Scented Geraniums are a large group (200+ species) categorized by scent. Some of the
common ones include Apple, Coconut, Lemon, Lime, Nutmeg, Oak-leaf, Peppermint, Rose,
Apricot, Chocolate, Ginger, Orange and Pineapple.
The scent is in oil produced in glands at the base of the leaf hairs. Bruising or crushing the
leaves releases the scented oil. The leaves are used for making potpourris, sachets, fl avorings,
jellies, teas, vinegars, or desserts.
The fl owers are small and whimsical and range from white to pink and red. Plants grow from
1’ to 5’ tall. In the Midwest they are an annual outdoor plant or a houseplant. They do best in
sun to part shade and prefer well-drained, fertile, moist soil.
Red Bud Trees Added to Honor and Memorial Program
The beautiful spring fl owering red bud tree, also known as Cercis Canadensis, has been added
to the Honorarium and Memorial Program at Boerner Botanical Gardens. There are ten trees
located in the Terrace Gardens now available at a donation of $300 each. These trees range
in size from 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches in diameter and are about 10-12’ in height currently, maturing
in 15 to 20 years. If you would like more information on the Honor and Memorial Program,
please contact Cynthia Seidle, FBBG Development Director, at (414) 525-5661.
Celebrate the Rose
The fi rst full bloom of the rose garden and arbors are always a special time at Boerner
Botanical Gardens. We are one of only 25 All-American Rose Selection (AARS) test sites in
the country and the only one in Wisconsin.
In just a few short weeks, the rose garden will be in it’s full splendor with over 500 AARS
winners. It is during the transition from spring to summer, our summer solstice on June 21st
and the days that follow, that we can expect the blooms to be at their peak.
Bruce Barr of the Milwaukee Rose Society will lead Wednesday’s June 21st garden walk on
roses. Roses have always been a passion of Bruce’s so be sure to mark this very special walk
on your calendar – plan to meet in the atrium of the Education & Visitors Center at 6 pm.
On Saturday, June 24th, the Milwaukee Rose Society will host their annual rose show.
The classrooms and exhibit halls will be fi lled with roses and visitors will have an opportunity
to see how roses are presented in vases and in fl oral arrangements. The American Rose
Society Consulting Rosarians (the society’s experts) will be present, so bring your rose
questions. The rose show and the lecture are free events aimed at inspiring you to grow
great roses the easy way.
