In Season
In Celebration of Trees at Whitnall Park
A Tree-Mendous Family Event
Saturday, April 19 - 10 am to 4 pm • Sunday, April 20 - Noon to 4 pm
Are you looking for an affordable family adventure, a new tree for your yard, or a pleasant day
outdoors? Then come to Whitnall Park for “In Celebration of Trees.”
To mark Earth Day and Arbor Day, the celebration will feature guided nature hikes, family activities
and entertainment, adult education presentations, demonstrations, displays and information booths.
Free native shrubs will be distributed while supplies last. Visitors may plant an acorn or discover their
carbon footprint... even ride the energy cycle. Ceremonial tree plantings will take place throughout the
weekend, along with presentations and demonstrations on tree selection, planting and maintenance.
Experts will teach how to identify the Emeral Ash Borer as well as suggest attractive trees to consider
planting instead of ashes. Trained staff and volunteers will lead guided nature hikes between Boerner
Botanical Gardens and Wehr Nature Center, and a free shuttle also will run between the sites.
In Celebration of Trees combines the efforts and resources of Freinds of Boerner Botanical Gardens,
Freinds of Wehr Nature Center, Milwaukee County Parks, University of Wisconsin-Extension and
Master Gardener volunteers. An urban forestry grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources to the Friends of Boerner Botanical Gardens largely underwrites the event.
A special event fee of $1 per person will admit visitors to both Boerner Botanical Gardens and Wehr
Nature Center for In Celebration of Trees. For event details visit www.boernerbotanicalgardens.org
or call 414-525-5601.
We invite you to learn more and to play an active and vital role in this special garden!

From the Garden
Stop, Smell the Roses and Think Pink
Many people ask what the Boerner horticulture staff does in the winter.
The answer: They get creative! Here are some of their inspirations, designs and plant
selections for the 2008 gardens:
A “Garden of Fragrance” will be the theme
for the Herb Garden as horticulturist Peggy
Gibbs-Zaukte combines David Austin Old
Roses with the 2008 Herb of the Year,
calendula, in a colorful and fragrant display
highlighting the herbs used in perfume,
cosmetics and potpourri. The Herb Garden
will host a special educational program on
Sunday, September 13th.
Horticulturist Lori Yanny is pleased that the perennial plants in the Rock Garden will be
coming into their own as the mass plantings of astilbe and primrose will have matured. Each
year Lori tucks annuals in and among the ferns, Solomon Seal and hosta in the Rock Garden,
and this year she is “thinking pink.”
The Annual Garden beds designed by Sarah Grimm will be alive with a bold color palette.
Impatiens, begonias, coleus and perilla will dazzle in shades of salmon, coral, mango, melon and violet.
Spring Question & Answer
Q
Q
Should peonies be cut back to the ground after blooming?
A
Mary Braunreiter, horticulturist
Never cut down peonies after blooming as the foliage produces nutrients for next
year’s growth. Peonies can and should be deadheaded after blooming to the first leaf
beneath the spent flowers.
Why does Boerner replace its tulips every year?
Shirley Dommer, Boerner Botanical Gardens director
A While the May mass blooming of the spring tulips is one of the most popular
attractions at Boerner, the spent flowers and old foliage that follow are most
unsightly. We prefer to quickly usher the tulips out of the display beds to make way
for summer annuals. Besides, we want to give our visitors a fresh new look each year.
A tip for the homeowner: Tulips that are left in the ground will not have a uniform
look the following year. As the bulb becomes older and larger it will form a cluster
of little bulbs with few, smaller or no blooms at all.
with our membership, and we thank each of you for your gifts and support. Your generosity
will make it possible for us to continue to share the importance of plants and protecting
our natural world with more than 12,000 children a year.
Plant Hope
Last winter, 270 third- and fourth-grade children from three
deserving MPS schools participated in a pilot program, Plant
Hope. We shared their progress with you through our member
newsletter and other mailings. Plant Hope allows children to
learn the vital role plants play in producing food and oxygen, to
value and steward our earth, to make healthy food choices and
to build self-esteem through interaction with the natural world.
Thanks to the generosity of individuals and grants from xxxxxxxxxxxx, we are able to expand Plant
Hope this year to reach more children and their families. We welcome back Congress Elementary
and Bruce Gaudalupe and are delighted to embrace four new schools: Ben Franklin Elementary,
Carson Academy, Humboldt Park Elementary and Rogers Elementary.
Volunteers are a vital part of the program. In 2007 we enlisted 12 veteran volunteers to guide the
children through the gardens on their visits to Boerner and assist in classroom presentations.
Youth groups and their leaders, under the direction of an FBBG educator, will maintain the Plant Hope
gardens planted by this year’s school children. We hope they will include scouts and schools that
have summer service programs. If you know of a youth group that would benefit from helping, please
contact our education coordinator, Monica Jeske, at 414-525-5659. Let’s all get involved!
for understanding and enjoying nature, horticulture, recreation and the environment.
