2010–2011 HIGHLIGHTS AND Milestones The VINE Home Thrift Store completed its first year of operation at 77 Star Street in the hilltop commercial district in Mankato. Income generated was designated to support the programs and services of the organization. OCTOBER VINE ANNUAL REPORT | 6 400 friends and supporters attended VINE’s 15th Birthday Celebration at Wheeler Park in North Mankato. VINE received permission from the Blue Earth County Board to evaluate the Nichols Building as a new home for VINE and the Summit Center. AUGUST 2010 VINE’s 14th Annual Rake the Town Service event was held on October 30. 444 rakers from 58 groups participated in the service project and enjoyed a chili lunch at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. They raked the yards of 227 older homeowners in Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties The efforts of 101 World War II and Korean Conflict Veterans were recognized at a luncheon at the Summit Center. The East High School choir provided entertainment and everyone enjoyed a patriotic sing-a-long led by Pastor John and Ellen Petersen from Christ the King Lutheran Church. The Holiday Sharing Project provided gifts to 51 people who would not otherwise have been remembered. Volunteers enjoyed wrapping and delivering the presents. VINE’s Annual Meeting was held on November 18 at the Summit Center. 50 people attended and listened to a presentation given by VINE’s staff about the organization’s accomplishments in the previous fiscal year. NOVEMBER DECEMBER VINE’s staff expanded with the addition of Erik Nelson as a full time staff member at the VINE Store; Adam Massmann, as parttime administrative support staff; and Willis Peterson, as part-time People to Jobs Driver. VINE and Blue Earth County entered into a formal agreement to transfer ownership of the Nichols Building to VINE for $1—providing VINE can raise the approximate 1.7 million dollars needed for essential renovation.
The groundwork was laid for VINE’s Capital Campaign to renovate the Nichols Building. Rather than hire an outside consulting firm, the VINE Board authorized Pam Determan, VINE’s Executive Director, and Greg White, VINE’s Chore Program Manager, and other key staff to manage the campaign. Volunteers were enlisted to plan, raise funds, and work on the facility design. Written materials were prepared and numerous community presentations were given. MARCH Brian Mason joined the VINE staff as a full-time chore program assistant. Volunteers shoveled snow a total of 535 times this winter for 61 homeowners. Roof snow removal was done at 34 homes. VINE’s Board of Directors selected a new logo and adopted a new mission statement to encompass the organization’s expanded effort. JANUARY APRIL Volunteers working through the AARP Taxpayer Assistance Program at the Summit Center completed 2,117 returns for low to moderate income tax payers—a 13% increase from the previous year. The VINE Board and staff recognized the contributions of VINE’s volunteers at a supper at Christ the King Lutheran Church. VINE’s Capital Campaign was formally announced. VINE’s Cab Company completed its first full year of operation with a balanced budget. Volunteers driving VINE-owned vehicles provided 255 low-income community members with 3,857 rides to medical appointments. JUNE 2011 MAY State funding for Project ROSE, a multi-county caregiver support project sponsored by the MN River Area Agency on Aging, ended. VINE’s commitment and support to family caregivers will continue without government funding. VINE ANNUAL REPORT | 7
