When I was asked to be on the
VINE board I was a little acquainted
with the amount of volunteer
services that VINE provides to the
local community. I was amazed at
the number of volunteer hours of
service, the thousands of rides given
annually and the wide range of
services provided; all of which focus
on helping older adults, people with
disabilities, and people encountering
difficult life situations.
It has been exciting to be a
part of the Nichols Building project.
VINE has grown well beyond the
capacity of our current space. The
Nichols Building will be a great
home for the Summit Center, VINE
operations, and for all the volunteer
caregiving programs. It will also
allow us to lease out the top two
floors which will be used toward
funding programs and operations in
the lower three floors.
Pam Determan, the staff, and
the board of VINE have fostered
what we call the “VINE disease”,
where there is a culture of service
and faith in action. When the
largest source of funding for VINE’s
programs was cut a few years ago, the
VINE Home Thrift Store was borne
as a partial means to make up for lost
funding. VINE quickly shifted gears,
which kept its vision alive.
The “Silver Tsunami” or “Age
Wave” is coming, where one in four
of us will be over the age of 65 by
2020. The Nichols Building will
allow us room to grow and address
the needs and opportunities that will
come with the aging population. We
are again, putting our faith in action
with the Nichols building project.
I look forward to what the future
holds for VINE.
