IIT Pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />
program brings students and senior faculty members together<br />
each week in small groups, where students interact with their<br />
advisers as both teachers and mentors. Throughout the curricula,<br />
the IIT interpr<strong>of</strong>essional projects provide a learning<br />
environment in which interdisciplinary teams <strong>of</strong> students<br />
apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom and laboratory<br />
to real-world projects sponsored by industry and<br />
government. IIT seeks to <strong>of</strong>fer an educational experience that<br />
is second to none.<br />
IIT was founded in 1940 through the merger <strong>of</strong> the Armour Engineering (established in 1967) joined the university<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> (established in 1890) and Lewis in 1986, forming the nucleus for IIT’s west-suburban Rice<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> (established in 1896). The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Design joined Campus. Today, IIT <strong>of</strong>fers degree programs through<br />
the university in 1949, and Chicago-Kent College <strong>of</strong> Law eight colleges, institutes and schools, with classes taught<br />
became part <strong>of</strong> IIT in 1969. The Midwest College <strong>of</strong> on five campuses in the Chicago area.<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Architecture<br />
The program in architecture was established at Armour<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>, one <strong>of</strong> IIT’s predecessors, in 1895.<br />
In 1938, the program came under the directorship <strong>of</strong> the<br />
world-renowned architect and educator Ludwig Mies van der<br />
Rohe. The college is housed in S.R. Crown Hall, one <strong>of</strong><br />
Armour College<br />
Armour College is named for IIT’s predecessor, Armour<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>, which was established in 1892 on the<br />
site <strong>of</strong> the present IIT Main Campus. The following departments<br />
comprise Armour College: Applied Mathematics;<br />
Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences; Chemical and<br />
Environmental Engineering; Civil and Architectural<br />
Chicago-Kent College <strong>of</strong> Law<br />
Mies’ most significant buildings and a major contribution<br />
to Chicago’s rich architectural heritage. The college emphasizes<br />
applied studio work under the tutelage <strong>of</strong> a faculty<br />
<strong>of</strong> practicing architects: the study <strong>of</strong> architectural theory;<br />
interdisciplinary learning; and foreign study.<br />
Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer<br />
Engineering; the Lewis Department <strong>of</strong> Humanities;<br />
Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering; and<br />
Social Sciences. The college is also home to the Pritzker<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medical Engineering and the Manufacturing<br />
Productivity Center.<br />
The Chicago-Kent College <strong>of</strong> Law is the second oldest law Laws. Although the college does not <strong>of</strong>fer an undergraduate<br />
college in <strong>Illinois</strong>. When Chicago-Kent joined the university degree, it <strong>of</strong>fers a specialized minor to undergraduates in<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Design, founded by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy<br />
in 1937 and named the “New Bauhaus” after Germany’s<br />
International School <strong>of</strong> Design, merged with IIT in 1949.<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Design is the first U.S. school to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
a Ph.D. in design; its program also includes a Master <strong>of</strong><br />
Science in Design and a Master <strong>of</strong> Design.<br />
