Big Wheel, Continued from page 73 major source of supply, the Halibrand Manufacturing Co.” Ted Halibrand didn’t invent the performance wheel, but his influence over the category looms large. He was a car guy long before the wheel business, working on and racing midgets on Southern California’s oval tracks during the years leading up to World War II. During the war, he worked for Douglas Aircraft as an engineer, where he often used magnesium to replace broken aluminum aircraft parts. And that planted the seed. Intrigued by magnesium’s light weight and strength, Halibrand looked for a way to adapt the metal into his race cars, knowing—as all rodders did—that less weight equals more speed. He cast his first set of wheels out of magnesium in 1946, and their immediate success led to the formation of the Halibrand Engineering Co. in 1947. Halibrand’s first customers were Indy racers, and it wasn’t long before Halibrand-shod cars were winning at the Brickyard. In fact, every racecar that won the Indy 500 between 1951– 1967 was outfitted with Halibrand 76 SEMA Show Daily wheels. Mickey Thompson went 400 mph at Bonneville with Halibrands. Carroll Shelby specified Halibrands for his cars. So did the Ford engineers who built GT40s to take on LeMans. It’s no wonder, then, that hot rodders and drag racers wanted those original “mags” for their own speed projects. Halibrand’s other lightweight speed parts—especially his quick-change rearend—were also in high demand then as they still are today. Halibrand was just on the cusp of much of that success when Erick Rickman took this shot in September 1963 for Smith’s article. In Halibrand’s hands is his “split-mag,” a drag race wheel that could be assembled in a variety of widths. Smith said that Halibrand was also about to introduce a new line of street wheels “to fit all American cars and some foreign iron, such as the Jaguar. These wheels will also be available with special knock-off hubs if the customer wants them.” Did they ever. Halibrand was inducted into the SEMA Hall of Fame in 1983. He passed away in 1991. The 2012 Hot Rod Industry Alliance (HRIA) Reception will include a live auction to support SEMA Cares and increase awareness for the third-annual HRIA Pinewood Builder’s Challenge. Fifteen well-known builders created one-of-a-kind miniature hot rods in the style of Pinewood derby cars. The cars were raced at the annual SEMA Pinewood Drag Races in Pomona, California. The cars are on display at HRIA’s booth #23395 and then 12 will be placed on eBay for auction from now until November 8; three will be auctioned live. All auction proceeds support SEMA Cares and its two children’s charities—Childhelp and Victory Junction Camp. Derek White and Street Vizions won their third consecutive race and will highlight the first-ever Live Auction to promote these Street Vizions to Highlight Live Auction at HRIA Reception miniature hot rods. The other two builds included in the live auction will be Spanky’s (Best Engineered) and Greening Auto Co. (Best in Show). The live auction is this evening, October 31, during the HRIA reception emceed by industry icon Dave McClelland. RSVP today for this exclusive event, and be prepared to bid! A Word With Derek White: Describe the inspirations behind the design of your pinewood car. We wanted to build something different this year. Also, we wanted a car that would be recognizable to any hot-rod or car enthusiast. The design Derek White and Street Vizions won their third consecutive race and will highlight the first-ever Live Auction to promote these miniature hot rods. is like a T-bucket and is modeled after the Red Baron. Describe some of the materials and resources you used to build your car. We used pinewood to create the body, and it sits on a hand-made aluminum chassis. New SEMA Market Update Now Available Study Examines Q2 2012 Economic Indicators and More By Mike Imlay SEMA members have come to rely on the association’s annual Market Report, a comprehensive research project summarizing economic, sales and new-vehicle trends of the past year affecting the $30 billion automotive specialtyequipment industry. Complete as that report is, however, SEMA backs it up with quarterly updates that track the latest trends and examine “Current Topics” through special sections to arm members with new research or information sources to better understand ongoing industry changes. The latest version, SEMA Market Update, Q2 2012, is now available. “This report brings together some statistics about the economy, vehicle sales and industry information that’s updated continuously through the year and packaged quarterly,” explained Gavin Knapp, SEMA senior market research manager. “The quarterly update also allows us to put out information that perhaps doesn’t make for a full, freestanding report but nevertheless represents a current topic or area of potential interest to the industry. So, in addition to our regular quarterly trending, we’ve again included a special topics section, this time highlighting SEMA’s Industry Needs survey. The full SEMA Market Update will be of interest to the entire industry, from manufacturing to distribution to retail levels. “The things that they’ll find include what’s going on with the economy in general, trends that affect retail and trends hitting the auto industry,” Knapp said. “It’s information that every segment of our industry can gain from.” Mixed Economic Factors Market Update first looks at such industry indicators as fuel prices, newvehicle sales, the SEMA Consumer Demand Index for specialty-equipment products and SEMA financial benchmarking for year-to-date sales within the industry. It then focuses on overall economic indicators, such as the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment and retail-sales rates, industrial production figures and the condition of the credit market.
