Pinstriping and
Lettering: The Lost Art,
Continued from page 52
1. I start by getting my center line
on the panel and making a pattern
from my vinyl plotter or a free-
hand pattern.
2. I transfer my pattern onto the panel
using saral transfer paper.
3. I always use a Dixie cup to hold my
paint as it only takes a little to do
an entire job. I start out with the
lettering part of the job. It’s very
important to do this first if you’re
outlining the lettering because you
want to give the paint time to dry.
You definitely don’t want to work
over wet paint.
4. After filling in all the lettering, I
take my fine line tape and, as before,
get my center line for the design. I
like to do my designs freehand, but
you can draw them out and transfer
them, too. Some jobs require you to
do this, but you end up doing the
job three times.
5. Next, I use my Mack 00 Series 20
striping brush. After I clean it, I
dip it in the paint and pallet the
brush back and forth to make sure I
get the paint up in the ferrel of the
brush for proper paint flow. Palletting
back and forth, adding reducer
for proper consistency, you want it
to feel somewhere between melting
ice cream and syrup. In other
words, you want the paint to have
some drag to it. Again: practice,
practice, practice.
6. I start by pulling lines on each side
of the tape until I get my center.
Once I have that, I fill out the
design, trying to be symmetrical
and adding balance to the design
without getting carried away.
Trust me, less is more; it’s easy to
overdo it.
7. I use a compass to get my perfect
circles. Keep in mind these designs
will get easier as you practice and
you develop your own style.
8. Once I finish the design, I add
a border to it and maybe some
more red.
9. I start with adding my outline to the
lettering and this takes some time
and alot of practice, but its a lot of
fun and it adds to the panel.
10. Once I finish outlining, I start adding
some white to the design for
balance, trying not to get too carried
away. When using red and white,
the white can kill the red if you’re
not careful.
11. I add just enough white to balance
things out. Then, I will add a white
border to match the red.
SATA and Dan Am Company to Show Off
Amazing New Products at SEMA Show
SATA and Dan Am Co. will be showing
off their Limited-Edition SATAjet
4000 B Camouflage, 3-D virtual paint
booth and other amazing new products
at booths #10609 and #10612 in the
North Hall Collision Repair & Refinish
section of the LVCC.
The design of the SATAjet 4000B
Camouflage gun is unique to SATA
in that it incorporates layers of SATA
spray guns in a camo pattern. The camo
design is a finish that is durable and can
be used in any paint environment. The
camouflage pattern can also be found
in a line of hats and shirts, which will
also be on display in the SATA SEMA
booth #10609. They are limited in
quantity but are available to order now.
Also, try your hand at the SATA virtual
3-D paint booth. The experience
begins with a simple registration process,
where you get to choose your own avatar.
You then enter the booth, wear 3-D
headgear and paint a 3-D vehicle inside
the booth. Your 3-D avatar and the
vehicle you are painting show up outside
the booth on a 55-inch 3-D screen
for viewers to watch. The experience
ends with your avatar and image being
printed on a SATA logo coffee mug to
take home as a keepsake.
SATA and Dan Am Co. SEMA Show booths
are #10609 and #10612 in the North Hall in
the Collision Repair & Refinish section.
Dan-Am Co. will also be displaying in
booth #10612—right across the aisle from
the SATA booth—the new Dan-Am Air
(DAA) aluminum piping, SATA filters
and the EZ-Flex bumper and panel stands.
Stop in to see how much more efficient
your air source can be when delivered
through a smooth wall aluminum pipe.
The Push-to-Connect fittings make installation
easy and air leaks a thing of the past.
As today’s paints require the addition of air
blowers, and more HVLP guns are used
than ever, air efficiency is critical.
