Famous painter Charley Hutton of
Charley Hutton’s Color Studio was all
smiles yesterday as he signed autographs
for his legion of fans at PPG booth
#24501 in the Racing & Performance
section of the 2012 SEMA Show.
Skeletons driving cars and riding
motorcycles painted with PPG products
overlooked his shoulder as Hutton
signed posters in PPG’s western-themed
display. Tumbleweeds and cattle skulls
completed the “Watering Hole” look
designed to draw attention to PPG’s
DPLV 2.1 VOC-compliant series of
epoxy primers; two new waterborne
primers, Envirobase High Performance
EPW115 and Aquabase Plus P950-
5505; new colors for the Ditzler Big
Pinstriping & Lettering: The Lost Art

When someone mentions pinstriping,
most of the time you think of vinyl
on a car. But the art of hand-painted
pinstriping is still alive and well.
People such as Von Dutch and Ed
Roth were the founding fathers of the
symmetrical art that was normally seen
on hot rods and motorcycles in the ’60s
and ’70s. If you had a hot rod, you had
to have it “striped,” and that still holds
true today. It was used on everything
from cars and boats to horsedrawn
buggies. It was very finely detailed,
sometimes containing characters, and
only a handful of people could do it.

Other celebrities who will be signing
autographs at the PPG booth this week
include Bobby Alloway (Alloway’s Hot
Rod Shop), Dave and Jody Perewitz
(Perewitz Cycle Fabrication) and Tom
and Mitch Kelly (Kelly & Son Crazy
Painters)—all of whom are well known
for their unique custom paint designs
for cars, trucks and motorcycles and
have racked up numerous awards for
their work. NHRA champion drag racers
John Force, Courtney Force, Mike
Neff and Robert Hight from the legendary
John Force Racing team will also
be on hand to greet visitors and answer
questions about their winning ways.
Style
The art form and the
way it’s done today is
the same as it was back
in the day, but everyone
has added their
own twist and style to
it. Every striper has his
or her own style: old
school, new school, tribal, scroll style,
gold leaf, etc. Most of the time, the client
doesn’t know what they want, and
they’ll say, “You’re the artist. Just do
whatever looks good, but treat it as if it
was yours.” Some people like graphics,
