As usual the New Year brings new challenges and
opportunities – and more excuses to get out there and drive
your Ferrari! I don’t know about you, but driving a fun (and
fast) car has to be one of those automatic “attitude
adjusters” that seems to draw me to the garage whenever
there is an excuse. Adjust the tire pressures- have to take a
drive to make sure the car feels “right.” Put on a new set of
wipers – ditto. Hard day at the office – just a little bit of automotive
“therapy” on an on-ramp is a quick cure.
Since we are blessed with great weather year round
(not counting the egg frying months of August and
September) I’m always glad to see our members get their
cars out for a fun run or track event. For those of you who
like a true road trip we just got done with a great social
event at the Keys plantation of John Edwards and his wife,
Margaret, our wonderful hosts for a stone crab feast beyond
compare. See the cover and inside pictures to see what you
missed! John and his wife made everyone feel at home,
swapping stories and imbibing the true relaxed atmosphere
of the Florida Keys. Again, many thanks to the entire
Edwards family for their hard work and generosity in sharing
their spectacular home with all of us.
Don’t forget our Sebring Spring Spectacular (REGIS-
TRATION FORM ON PAGE 2 OF THIS ISSUE) – April 3-5,
at the always challenging 17-turn 3.87 mile Sebring 12
Hour track – that’s right folks – you will be driving on the
very same track that has hosted one of the premier road
races in all of the United States since the 1950’s. The host
hotel is the Chateau Elan, newly expanded. We will once
again be targeted by the “Pink Sombrero” – aka Dr. Bob
Mack for pointed comments on attire, appearance or driving
ability, not necessarily in that order. Our title sponsor,
Ferrari of Central Florida will provide both tech inspections,
and a repair or two for those needing same. Make sure to
get your car teched prior to the track – and please change
your brake fluid and make sure you have plenty of meat on
those pads- Sebring is notorious for being hard on brakes!
Back by popular demand is the Saturday Night Trackside
Bar-B-Q – nothing better after a long day at the track than
getting messy and having a few cold ones! We have
planned Friday charity rides, kids rides and even a ladies
only track secession – so make sure to bring the kids and
encourage the ladies to get out on the track – who knows
you may have to start fighting for the keys to Enzo’s finest!
Our friends at The Collection also want to be sure to
invite you to the Ferrari Challenge at Homestead Miami
Speedway – March 8th and 9th, although this is not a FCA
event we intend to have a corral for our members. An e-vite
will be forwarded to as a reminder – but mark your calendar
now. We look forward to sharing more of these types of
events with George and the other good people at The
Collection.
Finally, this is the election issue. No Red States and Blue
States – no “hanging chads” – no power brokers or spin
doctors, just an all volunteer deal – we do this for the love
of the club and the marque, but even diehard volunteers
need to “cycle out” every once and a while, so enclosed is
the ballot for the new Board of Directors. Some of the names
have been changed to protect the innocent, but rest assured
that all of these people, selected by a nominating committee,
are qualified to carry the torch and continue the good work
that has been started. Please be sure to fill out the enclosed
ballot and mail it in before March 30th. If you are interested
in volunteering for late evenings and hard work in
exchange for zero pay – step forward. All kidding aside,
we need volunteers who are willing to work and share the
same passion for Ferraris that motivates all of us – don’t be
shy, e-mail me if you are interested. The next election is only
a little more than a year away!
Keep up with our upcoming events by visiting the webwe
have plans for more social events, garage tours, go karting
and more fun!
Part Holiday lunch,
Whatever you choose
to call our 2007
simply fantastic! The
perfect mix of our
longest-term Florida
attending their first
club gathering. The
afternoon was perfect,
the atmosphere was
festive and the crowd
was our largest in
memory. The true star
of the day however
was the room itself.
One could not imagine
a more perfect
beautiful Christmas
tree. Our first-ever
club gathering at Cafe
success and
it’s an easy guess as
to where we’ll be
meeting again next
year and beyond.
We had so much to
celebrate in 2007 and
by the way our 2008
the best days of the
PARTY TIME AT
JOHN EDWARDS’
FEBRUARY 8, 2008
ISLAMORADA, FL
Saturday, February
8th was a perfect day
in the Florida Keys.
There aren’t many
“bad” days there, but
driving your Ferrari on
one of the greatest
roads anywhere, only
to end up at the bay
side estate of John &
Margaret Edwards
was one we’d repeat
anytime. A capacity
crowd of Florida Region
members enjoyed a
huge stone crab feast
with all the trimmings
amid sea breezes,
swaying palms and
gleaming Ferraris. This
is the perfect example
of what happens when
a club member raises
his hand and has an
idea that sounds fun.
This club was built on
low-key socials exactly
like this one (except
maybe without the
stone crabs!) and the
eager participation of
members just looking
to get together on a
sunny afternoon. So
the next time you
wonder why there’s
“never anything to do in
your area,” don’t whine
- raise your hand. It
could actually be fun!
This February, Ferrarista around the world honored the 110th anniversary
of Enzo Ferrari’s birth. This is a celebratory year for Shelton Ferrari Maserati, too,
as we mark the 25th anniversary of our grand opening in 1983. It’s an interesting
story, how the dealership came to be, because as the Ferrari brand grew
in loyalty and excitement here in the United States, so too has our dealership.
More than 25 years ago, Tom and Steve Shelton were pretty successful in
amateur sports car racing. Little did they know where this growing passion
would lead them. A good friend of the Shelton family and fellow motor sports
enthusiast named Nick Gunther traveled with them to the races. Nick, who
owned a couple of Ferraris, had represented the two South Florida Ferrari franchise
owners for many years, and he approached Tom to see if the brothers
would be interested in purchasing the dealership.
While Tom and Steve were race car drivers and enthusiasts, they didn’t
really know anything about the car business; Steve worked in advertising and
Tom was a real estate broker. However, they realized that there were tax
advantages to owning a car dealership related to racing, and thought the
opportunity sounded interesting.
They purchased the dealership from Bob Cressman and Phil Baumgarten,
and relocated it from the Sistrunk Boulevard and Andrews Avenue area to the
current Federal Highway location, which had been an old antique shop, and
prior to that a storm panel manufacturing company. Shelton Ferrari Maserati officially
opened in April 1983, and Tom and Steve felt enthusiastic about the future.
That was short lived. Not long after they closed the deal, they realized
that things were not as rosy as they seemed. They had underestimated how
bad the climate was in the 1980s, with high interest rates and a questionable
product. Tom and Steve started out in this new endeavor selling cars that didn’t
perform as well as a turbo Saab and competing for people who could buy
Ferraris in Europe at fifty cents on the dollar. Needless to say, it was slow
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS IN SOUTH FLORIDA
going and took nearly four years before the climate changed.
The rest, as they say, is history. The Shelton brothers’ racing background,
plus Tom’s membership in the Ferrari Club of America, gave them wider exposure
to potential customers than they normally would have had. Don Andrews,
the dealership’s first salesman, was also the FCA’s first Florida Regional
Director and founder of many of the Club’s track events as well as the Coppa
Bella Macchina award (this award focuses not only on the original “look” of a
car, but also on its overall operation). Having Don on our team opened the door
to many prospects and partnerships with FCA members and other enthusiasts.
Al Roberts, who had been building Ferrari engines since the 1960s, and Stuart
Robertson brought a strong reputation for quality service to our shop. And the
dealership had some high profile customers, such as Paul Pappalardo who
loaned us remarkable cars for exhibits and parties. All of these people helped
Shelton Ferrari Maserati get immersed in the Ferrari culture.
Perhaps most significantly, the product changed. In 1984, Ferrari-authorized
dealers were able to get the more popular 12 cylinder cars from Europe,
and the four-valve 308 was generating a lot of interest. The cars improved in
terms of the quality, craftsmanship, excitement and performance, building to a
hard-earned and well-deserved reputation that the brand enjoys today.
For the past 25 years, Shelton Ferrari Maserati has watched the marque
undergo significant changes. Changes in ownership, changes in leadership,
and changes in the quality and performance of the vehicles. These have been
positive stages in the growth of the brand, and Shelton has proudly been a
partner every step of the way. We’ve stood behind classic favorites, embraced
new model introductions, and for years have supported the racing tradition
with our winning Challenge teams.
A leap of faith that Tom and Steve took 25 years ago has resulted in the
perfect mix of family, friends and loyal customers who today enjoy the pleasures
of not only driving the finest cars produced, but also the camaraderie of
Ferrari Club of America Florida Region members and fellow enthusiasts.
My Ferrari is insured,
home. If the house
was damaged with
TECH TIPS
INSURANCE FOR YOUR FERRARI
Whether you just purchased your Ferrari or you have owned your car for
many years, having it adequately insured is important. It doesn’t matter if
your Ferrari is new or vintage. If you own a vintage Ferrari you should check
the current value of your car against what your insurance covers it for. Many
vintage Ferrari models have more than doubled in value in the last 2 years.
You need to check the current value, then check with your insurance agent to
see your coverage is adequate to replace the car should there be a loss.
Several Ferrari publications have a section on values of the different models.
Your Ferrari dealer should be able to help also. You may want to get a letter
stating the value of your car from your dealer or an automotive appraiser.
If you have trouble getting coverage for your Ferrari or the price seems
extremely expensive, shop around. There are many insurance companies that
specialize in insurance for exotic cars. They realize that the cars are something
we care about, take care of, do not put a huge amount of miles on, and
insuring them is a safe risk. These companies can be found advertising in
Ferrari, and other automotive enthusiast publications. Check with the company
that has your current insurance to see if they have a special policy for collector
cars. Usually the collector car policies have a limit on mileage that can
be put on the cars and a few rules like the car must be kept in a garage but
most of us keep our cars in a garage anyway. If the first specialty insurance
company’s rules and mileage limits seem unreasonable or do not work for
you, keep looking. There are many out there.
As spring approaches, my thoughts always turn to
Sebring. The 12 Hours of Sebring is just around the corner
closely followed by the Florida Region’s Sebring
Spectacular track event.
Everyone has a Sebring story, but mine happens to
start back in my youth. Growing up in central Florida I was
accustomed to hearing about the Sebring 12-hour race. I
would read the sports section and see cars such as Ferraris,
Ford GT40s and those P-cars staking claim to the fact that
they had conquered the famous Sebring track. Was I in love
with the Ferraris? I must admit that the Ford GT40s were my
favorites back in the ‘60’s. Perhaps that is the reason that I
love our 2005 edition of the Ford GT so much. What is interesting
is that I never attended a 12-hour race until the 1980’s;
you see I do not come from a racing family. My mom, dad
and sister all attended races only to declare that they would
never go back as they could not follow what was going on
and were bored by noon. However, I was stilled infatuated with this race.
Seeing the pictures on the news or hearing stories about folks lining up before
dawn so they could get in the gates before the start were intriguing to me.
After marrying Jim, I talked him into taking me to the race. You see,
Sebring in the ‘80’s was going through a period of wildness that kept many
people away. On that first trip I was like a kid in a candy shop. The sights
and sounds were amazing. How could my folks and sister find this boring?!?
SEBRING,SOMETHING SPECIAL
I was amazed by the Group 44 Jag team. I was sure
those slick cars with their team of guys in white and
green would surely win going away. Well guess what,
they did what Jags do best, they broke!
Several years later I took my first driving school at
Sebring. Driving a Formula Ford over the old concrete
runways for three days was an exhausting experience.
However, this was my first introduction to driving on a
track and I was hooked. Since that time I have driven
many laps on this historic track and I never get bored
or tired of the 17-turn track.
If you have never been to the 12 Hours of
Sebring you need to make at least one trip. You will
see things at Sebring that you will see nowhere else.
Where else can you see something called the
“Wussy Wagon” or see a gang dressed up in cow
suits? If you are a brave gal you may want to venture into the Green Park and
get a free breast exam. You may like it or you may hate it but I guarantee you
will remember the 12 Hours of Sebring.
Your opportunity to drive the historic Sebring International Raceway is
just around the corner. The first weekend in April is our time to get out and
exercise our ponies and have some fun. I would highly recommend that you
take in this event if you only come over for the day. Look me up I will be glad
to take you for a ride, if I haven’t cooked my brakes!
BIRMINGHAM TO PALM BEACH TO PARIS!
Three events in the first two months of 2008! The first was on home territory,
being the Autosport International Racing Car Show, at the National
Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Not specifically a Ferrari show, but there
was a F2007 F1 car on display, plus there was the announcement of a new
British racing team CR Scuderia, who will contest the FIA GT series with a pair
of F430 GTs and the British
GT series with a trio of F430
GT3s. Shell Heritage had an
attractive race track themed
display featuring some classic
Ferraris, and there were
further examples of the marque
dotted around the exhibition
halls, including an Enzo.
My next stop was the
annual Cavallino Classic in
Palm Beach, which for me is
“Ferrari fun in the sun,” and
a welcome break from the
grey British winter! Now in
its 17th year, it has become
firmly established as the
Ferrari season opener in the
warm and sunny climes of
your “Sunshine State.” The
broad ranging timetable
encompasses the first rounds
of the US Historic Challenge
series at Moroso Motorsports
Park, where attendees can
also exercise their own
“Prancing Horses” over a
four day period. There is also
the Grand Driving and
Culinary Tour of Palm Beach,
the always popular Jet
Reception at Palm Beach
International Airport, plus the
Yacht Hop at the Rybovich
moorings and the charity
brunch at Mar-A-Lago amongst the events on the itinerary, but the highlight is
definitely the concours at The Breakers Hotel on the Saturday.
The Jet Party at Palm Beach International Airport, hosted by Jet Aviation,
attracted a fine selection of Ferraris to the tarmac amidst the splendid private
jets on display, together with a classic Mustang fighter plan. Guests were
invited to vote for their favorite car in the People’s Choice Award, which went
to the 250 Europa GT, chassis # 0397 GT, of Bob and Marianne Anderson.
The venue also saw the unveiling to Floridians of the 430 Scuderia by
Maurizio Parlato, the President and CEO of Ferrari North America, attracting
a great deal of interest from attendees, or maybe it was the alluring hostesses
standing just alongside it!
The elegant Breakers Hotel on the ocean shore is an impressive backdrop
to the concours field on the croquet lawn and adjacent golf fairways, where
well over a hundred Ferraris gathered in various classes to be judged by an
international panel. Competition models were a little thin on the ground this
year, but this was compensated
for by a fine selection of
fifties and sixties GT models,
including 400 and 410
Superamericas, one of which
was the stunning pale yellow
400 SA cabriolet with a dark
blue hardtop, chassis # 2407
SA, of Wayne Nelson, then
there was an impressive lineup
of 250 GT California
Spiders, a rare 250 GT
”Interim” berlinetta, chassis #
1521 GT, and the unique
412 MI sports racing model,
chassis # 0744. The Best of
Show Competition car award
went to the blue 166 MM
Touring berlinetta, chassis #
0026 M, of Jack Croul, with
the Best of Show Road Car
award going to the elegant
deep red 250 GT S1 Pinin
Farina cabriolet, chassis #
0813 GT, of Peter Kalikow.
In February it was off
to Paris, France, for the
Retromobile show, definitely
one of my favorites, with its
special Gallic charm, and a
gathering that also attracts a
number of US visitors, with
prominent Ferrari collectors
like Paul Pappalardo and
Peter Sachs among the attendees.
There were a number of Ferraris spread around the main hall, with the
most valuable display being on the stand of British restoration company Hall
& Hall, featuring a 312 B2 F1 car, a Dino 206 S and a 330 P sports prototype.
Across the aisle R&M Auctions showed a Dino 246 S sports racing
car and a 250 GT California Spider, with the nearby Sport et Collection
stand featuring a 250 GT “TdF” berlinetta and a 121 LM sports racing car,
add in many other rare cars, an extensive classic vendor area and an art
gallery, and you have a very good excuse to visit Paris. Next stop should be
Amelia Island and the 12 Hours of Sebring in March, I look forward to seeing
some of you there.

SOUTH FLORIDA EXOTIC CAR TOY RALLY
On Saturday, December 8, 2007, the second annual “South Florida
Exotic Car Toy Rally” raised the bar on what was already a huge success.
This annual event, which benefits the United States Marine Corp Toys for Tots
program, also provided a fantastic day for exotic car enthusiasts.
The event began in Palm Beach, at Mar-a-Lago (Donald Trump’s private
club), where over 125 cars and over 250 participants gathered to eat breakfast
and get ready for the “Toy Rally.” Following breakfast, the Florida
Highway Patrol escorted the USMC’s military truck as well as the parade of
exotic cars down A1A, past the fantastic scenery of the Atlantic ocean and
the infamous Palm Beach mansions, to Shelton Ferrari for a “pit stop,” then
on to The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood. At the Hard
Rock, a live band cranked out some classic tunes, while the participants
donated their toys to the USMC soldiers. There were so many toys donated,
that the USMC needed to call in for “reinforcements” to bring a second military
truck to carry them all! In addition to the toys, over $7,600 in cash was
raised. Following the toy donations, a fantastic lunch was served at The Park
restaurant at the Hard Rock.
“Toys for Tots” is a charitable organization, run by the USMC, which collects,
then distributes toys to underprivileged children during the holiday season.
Many children who receive these toys would otherwise receive nothing
if it weren’t for the generosity of the people who donate them.
Local south Florida businessman and FCA member, Fred Burton, who
organizes the event said, “Seeing a child’s face light up when they receive a
toy is well worth all of the hard work that everyone puts into making this event
happen. We are very fortunate to be able to drive such amazing cars, and
giving back to the community is the right thing to do.”
The FCA, along with many other sponsors, volunteers, and participants,
is proud to be a supporter and sponsor of this event. Mark your calendars
now for this year’s upcoming 2008 South Florida Exotic Car Toy Rally, tentatively
scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2008. More information, pictures,
